An Absolutely Remarkable Thing
Hank Green

Young Adult fiction
In his
much-anticipated debut novel, Hank Green--cocreator of "Crash Course",
"Vlogbrothers", and "SciShow"--spins a sweeping, cinematic tale about a
young woman who becomes an overnight celebrity before realizing she's
part of something bigger, and stranger, than anyone could have possibly
imagined.
The Carls just appeared. Coming home from work at three a.m., twenty-three-year-old April May stumbles across a giant sculpture. Delighted by its appearance and craftsmanship--like a ten-foot-tall Transformer wearing a suit of samurai armor--April and her friend Andy make a video with it, which Andy uploads to YouTube. The next day April wakes up to a viral video and a new life. News quickly spreads that there are Carls in dozens of cities around the world--everywhere from Beijing to Buenos Aires--and April, as their first documentarian, finds herself at the center of an intense international media spotlight.
Now April has to deal with the pressure on her relationships, her identity, and her safety that this new position brings, all while being on the front lines of the quest to find out not just what the Carls are, but what they want from us.
Compulsively entertaining and powerfully relevant, An Absolutely Remarkable Thing grapples with big themes, including how the social internet is changing fame, rhetoric, and radicalization; how our culture deals with fear and uncertainty; and how vilification and adoration spring from the same dehumanization that follows a life in the public eye.

Why I can't wait for this one!
WOWZA!!!! This SURE sounds like a truly profound work!! However, it's not the first time that a YA novel tackles themes of real importance. In fact, as many of us readers know, YA Fiction has really come into its own! SO happy about that!!
This is DEFINITELY one that I do NOT want to miss! This plot makes me think of all kinds of adjectives: exciting, provocative, thought-provoking, riveting, and on and on and on..... Well, September 25th is just around the corner! And then I'll POUNCE!
Lol.

It does sound like a thought provoking read! Great pick Maria- hope it lives up to that cool premise!!

ReplyDeleteHi, Barb!

Glad you like it, too! And I hope you're having a wonderful week yourself!!

Hi, Bogdana!
DeleteYeah, it sounds SO GOOD!!! I think I'll go ahead and pre-order it, too!! Glad you love this one, too!!
Thanks for commenting!!! <3 :)
This sounds very different. The plot seems very creative and out of the box. As you mention, it apparently tackles some serious ideas and themes. The tendency for things and people to go viral in the modern age is such an interesting issue worthy of good fiction.
ReplyDeleteHi, Brian!
DeleteYes, it certainly does! I've never come across anything like this before. And, yes, it does tackles some serious ideas and themes. This is what I lOVE about YA Fiction -- it can be as profound as adult fiction, without all the bad language and other objectionable stuff I don't like.
I not only find the appearance of these strange statues unique and intriguing, but also like the inclusion of Internet issues and social media fascinating. It's incredible just how much of an influence the Internet has on our lives!
Thanks for the interesting comment!! <3 :)
I've heard about this book before and people were wondering how it can be YA when it's about a 23 y/o woman but even so I'm willing to give it a shot because it sounds super intrigued!
ReplyDeleteHi, Steph!
DeleteHmmm....you definitely have a point there! Well, I'm going by the information I found on Goodreads. It's been classified as YA there, so that's why I included this category in my post.
Now you've made me wonder just what the age parameters are for YA Fiction! I don't think anyone has ever clarified that. From my experience in reading YA books in the past, I've always seen that protagonists are usually around 17. So I don't know why this books has been classified as YA.
Regardless of this classification, this SURE sounds like an exciting, thought-provoking read! I've certainly NEVER heard of such a plot before!
Thanks for the nice comment!! <3 :)
Ooh! This book sounds interesting! Great pick!

Well this one sounds a bit difference, Maria! I hope you really enjoy it - that cover is certainly eye-catching.
ReplyDeleteHi, Sarah!
DeleteThat was precisely what attracted my attention! I've never heard of such a plot before! I KNOW I'm giong to enjoy this one!
Sadly, though, I don't really like the cover all that much....
Thanks for commenting!! <3 :)
I didn't know that Hank had written his own book! I know him through his and his brother's videos which I sometimes catch on Facebook. The two are a hoot together, and I admire both men. This one sounds like it will be good and adds a different perspective to a popular topic and issues that have arisen in this internet era. Have a great weekend, Maria.
ReplyDeleteHi, Wendy!
DeleteAnd I've just heard about him! Lol. This book immediately caught my attention when I first came across it, and then I read the author's bio. WOW! He's certainly done a LOT of things! Yes, that is indeed admirable. I need to go check out the videos he's done with his brother. I also love that he and his brother have raised SO much money for several charities! These guys are PURE GOLD.
As for the book, the plot is VERY original and interesting! I've never heard of anything even remotely like it before! And it even includes issues brought into our lives due to the Internet. LOVE it! I must say, though, that I wish the publisher had picked a better cover. This one doesn't do much for me. Lol. Of course, I'm definitely NOT judging the book by it, as I very much want to read this novel!
Thanks for the nice comment!! HUGS TO YOU AND MOUSE!! <3 :)
