This Week's Question
Do you like to finish one book
before starting the next,
or do you read several at once?
(Submitted by Cathy @
My Answer
This depends on my mood, as well as on how riveting a given book is. At times, I will focus on reading only one book, because it's SO good, I just can't put it down, and the author just keeps me turning pages. On other occasions, I have several books going at the same time.
Another important factor that influences my reading patterns is that I'm interested in reading nonfiction, as well as fiction. However, due to the nature of this blog, I focus primarily on fiction here. I do have some nonfiction reviews on this blog (check out my Book Reviews page if you're interested), but I don't really review such books here anymore. Most of my readers are not that interested in nonfiction. So I have relegated such reviews to my other blog, MindSpirit Book Journeys, which is sadly neglected, though, because of lack of time.
What then happens is that, when weeks pass with few book reviews on A Night's Dream of Books, it's because I've gotten into some fascinating nonfiction book that I know people who visit here won't be interested in. For example, I'm currently reading a book titled The Rosicrucians, by Christopher McIntosh. I will have to review it on my other blog. I'm also reading two fiction books, which you can see in my sidebar.
Most of the nonfiction books I'm interested in deal with the topics of Christian theology, the New Age, or psychology. Sometimes, right in the middle of reading a GREAT fiction book, I will come across an equally GREAT nonfiction book, and I get pulled toward it.
There are just SO many interesting books I want to read! So I frequently get desperate to read them ALL! The funny thing is, I often leave books half-read, ironically enough. Sometimes that's because I've lost interest in a particular book. This can be for any number of reasons. I just wish I had a Time Machine, so I could get to ALL the books I DEFINITELY want to read!
Another factor influencing my balance of fiction and nonfiction reads is that I participate in blog tours for TLC Book Tours. I always sign up for their tours, because they will actually send me a PRINTED book to review! The other tour companies I host blog tours for will only send me either a PDF or a Mobi ebook. I MUCH prefer printed books, so I rarely review books for those companies. This tour company usually promotes fiction books, but occasionally will also promote nonfiction. But their tours will inevitably pull me away from reading other books I've been wanting to read, such as the ones that have been sitting on my shelves for YEARS! However, I just can't resist the attraction of getting a FREE printed book to keep!! Lol.
I'm just an OBSESSED bookworm who wants to read as many of the books she owns as possible! Unfortunately, I'm also an unwilling practitioner of the fine Japanese art of tsundoku...... Lol. I keep telling myself that I'll read ALL the books I've collected over the years. I keep hoping that, somehow, I will!

Actually, I enjoy non fiction, and that history of the Rosicrucians sounds fascinating! There’s a one-word NAME for buying books and never getting around to reading them? Wow! I think anybody who is a passionate reader is guilty of that.
ReplyDeleteI don’t blame you for not doing many reviews for publishers who only supply ebooks. I’ve encountered one, recently, that not only supplies only ebooks, but doesn’t even let you keep them! After 60 days, it disappears from your ereader. Guess which publisher will be supplying me with print books only in future, if they want me to do more reviews/interviews?
I am reading a lot of books right now, and not only that, I’m rereading old favourites! I can’t do it any other way.
Hi, Sue!
DeleteI'm glad you're interested in the book about the Rosicrucians! I've always been interested in such weird subjects, lol. But not everyone is. If I had more time, I'd review more such books on my other blog, "MindSpirit Book Journeys". I give most of my time to "A Night's Dream of Books", and the readers I have here are just not into nonfiction that much.
Yes, I found out about the word "tsundoku" one day, while browsing online. And of course you're right -- any passionate reader is guilty of that, lol.
Some bloggers might not mind reading and reviewing ebooks, but I certainly do! I do it from time to time, but not very often at all. That's AWFUL, that this publisher will not even let you keep the ebooks! As to who will be supplying you with print books only in the future, I really have no idea, unless you mean TLB Book Tours. But they're a book tour company, not a publisher.
Yeah, I can't do it any other way, either! And I want to do some rereading myself, too! Lol.
Thanks for the TERRIFIC comment!! <3 :)
This is a really interesting topic Maria. I have actually been thinking about it myself. There was a time when I was strictly one book at a time. I have moved to two at a tine. A few years ago I said to myself that I was going to have one fiction and one nonfiction started at all times but I did not stick to that as I often have just two fiction books started.
ReplyDeleteI have gotten very disciplined about finishing books, but I am careful about what I start. I tend to only read books thaf I really want to read.
Of course I agree, there is never enough time to read all that I want to read!
Hi, Brian!
DeleteOh, DEFINITELY! :)
Like you, I used to read one book at a time. That was years ago, though. Ever since I became a blogger, though, I've gotten SO desperate to read as many interesting books as possible, that I've developed a pattern of reading at first one, then adding others. I have no particular order to this, though. It just happens! Lol.
It's interesting that you have tried to establish some order to your reading. One fiction and one nonfiction book sounds like a good idea. I would like to try that, but, as I know I'd get carried away with other books! It's just whatever happens to catch my interest at any particular time. Lol.
Yup! Never enough time, as Frank Zappa famously said! :)
Thanks for the GREAT comment!! <3 :)
I'm always at least reading two books, a book that's either an e-book or physical book depending on what I'm reading at the moment and one audiobook. Sometimes I'm reading three at the same time if I'm doing a buddy read, which happens every now and then.
ReplyDeleteHi, Steph!
DeleteI'm kinda like you, except that when I have two books going, a third interesting one appears! Lol. There's just no telling how things will go with me. So, sometimes I'm able to stick to only one book, but then, when I'm in the middle of that book, another one catches my eye. So then I start that second book, only to get interested in a third and perhaps a fourth! Lol.
Right now, I have three books going -- the two fiction books that I have featured in my sidebar, and "The Rosicrucians", which I'm reading because I've always been fascinated by weird topics. :)
Thanks for the nice comment!! HUGS!!! <3 <3 :) :)
Amazing, amazing, amazing...those are my adjectives for you, Maria.
ReplyDeleteI can only read one at at time. I don't know how you do it especially with non-fiction. :)
It is a goal I have as well to read all the books I have, but I don't think that is going to happen. :)
Thanks for sharing and visiting my blog.
Hi, Elizabeth!
DeleteTHANK YOU SO MUCH!! You are SO sweet!! <3 <3 <3
Sometimes, like you, I read only one book at a time. But there are other times that I get pulled in several directions by other books, especially nonfiction. There are just SO many topics I'm interested in! Lol.
I'm suspecting that I won't be able to read all the books I currently own, either.... So I might very well stop doing review blog tour posts, and stick only to excerpt and teaser posts.
You're very welcome for the sharing, as well as my visit! And thank YOU for the LOVELY comment!! HUGS!!! <3 <3 :) :)
I hope you don’t stop doing tours. We will read whatever we can get done, right? :)
DeleteThanks for the reply.
Hi, again!
DeleteNo, I won't stop doing tours. I really enjoy participating in them! What I WILL do is to concentrate on book promotion tour posts. Most of the time, they include an excerpt from the book being promoted. And I throw in a min-review of that excerpt, too! This is my way of including some original content in this type of tour post. That way, those visitors who think that book tours are spam, can see that MY tour posts, even when they don't include reviews, DO include some original content. :)
I stopped doing interviews for blog tours a long time ago, too. That's because I not only had to come up with good interview questions, but then, when I received the answers from the tour company, it took me longer to put the post together. When I saw that authors didn't even bother to thank me for the interview, I said to myself, "The heck with it! I'm NOT doing this anymore!" Lol.
So yes, I will continue to do blog tours, but, as I've just stated, none of them will be review tours anymore. (Well, I do have three review tours coming up, but after that, no more!) I REALLY need to get to the books I've had sitting on my shelves for YEARS!! LOL.
Thanks for commenting again!! You're SUPER NICE!! HUGS!! <3 <3 :) :)
I wish I could read all the books all the time! Imagine how much we would get read. Or maybe we'd get very little read because we keep going back and forth. LOL Seriously though, I am a polygamous reader, although I wasn't always so. It started with me reading one book and listening to an audio at the same time and has evolved from there. Right now I have four books going. I hope you have a great week, Maria!
ReplyDeleteHi, Wendy!
DeleteYEAH!!! That's what ALL of us obsessed bookworms want! Lol.
So you're a polygamous reader, huh? That's a HILARIOUS way to put it!! :) :) Well, I'm very much "guilty" of the same thing. I start off with good intentions -- I'm only going to read ONE book, and read it all the way to the end. But then other books "call out" to me, and, before you know it, I'm reading two or more! Lol. Right now, I'm reading three -- "The Rosicrucians", and the two fiction books you can see in my sidebar: "Bequeathed", and "Mistletoe Miracles".
I think, when all is said and done, we bookworms can get DESPERATE to get in as many books as possible at one go, because we just become so OVERWHELMED by the sheer amount of totally fascinating, riveting books in the world..... And this is especially bad for someone like me, who happens to be a rather slow reader. However, when a book REALLY grabs me, I can speed up my quite reading a bit! This was the case with "Dread Nation", by Justina Ireland.
In the end, it all depends on the books, the circumstances, and my mood. Lol!
Thanks for the nice comment!! HUGS TO YOU AND MOUSE!! <3 :)
