Adeluna is a soldier. Five years ago, she helped the magic-rich island of Grace Loray overthrow its oppressor, Argrid, a country ruled by religion. But adjusting to postwar life has not been easy. When an Argridian delegate vanishes during peace talks with Grace Loray’s new Council, Argrid demands brutal justice—but Lu suspects something more dangerous is at work.

Devereux is a pirate. As one of the outlaws called stream raiders who run rampant on Grace Loray, he pirates the island’s magic plants and sells them on the black market. But after Argrid accuses raiders of the diplomat’s abduction, Vex becomes a target. An expert navigator, he agrees to help Lu find the Argridian—but the truth they uncover could be deadlier than any war.

Benat is a heretic. The crown prince of Argrid, he harbors a secret obsession with Grace Loray’s forbidden magic. When Ben’s father, the king, gives him the shocking task of reversing Argrid’s fear of magic, Ben has to decide if one prince can change a devout country—or if he’s building his own pyre.

As conspiracies arise, Lu, Vex, and Ben will have to decide who they really are . . . and what they are willing to become for peace.

Why I can't wait for this one!

Well!! This book looks ALL kinds of AWESOME!! OMG.....ALL THAT MAGIC!! ALL THAT INTRIGUE!!
"I wants it, my Precious!!" says Gollum. And I like the fact that one country has a theocracy for a government. Wonder how THAT will work out with the rest of the plot elements..... But the BEST of all is that the female protagonist is VERY obviously kick-butt. Yup, that TOTALLY does it, for me! Lol.  And OH, YES, there are PIRATES, too!! (Hey, this is the author of the Snow Like Ashes books!!)

Sara Raasch has known she was destined for bookish things since the age of five, when her friends had a lemonade stand and she tagged along to sell her hand-drawn picture books, too. Not much has changed since then -- her friends still cock concerned eyebrows when she attempts to draw things and her enthusiasm for the written word still drives her to extreme measures. She is the author of the NY Times bestselling Snow Like Ashes trilogy and These Rebel Waves, a duology. Neither features her hand-drawn pictures.

  2. The theocracy thing is Interesting. It would be good if the author explores that in terms of this nags like politics and society. That is one of the nice things about fantasy. Writers can let thier imaginations run free and delve into all kinds of issues based on hypothetical situations and society.

    Have a great week Maria!

    1. Hi, Brian!

Yes, the theocracy angle does sound interesting. I want to see how that plays out! I don't think theocracies are an ideal form of government, by any means. Modern societies are much too pluralistic for that.

It's indeed wonderful that fantasy writers are able to play with different imaginary scenarios for how societies can develop. This goes all the way to Plato's "Republic", which is an fascinating mix of fiction and nonfiction. Such scenarios make for some great (and sometimes frightening) reading!!

Thanks for the interesting comment! Hope you've been having a great week, too!! <3 :)
