My Thoughts About This Cover

This has got to be one of the most LUSCIOUS, STUNNING editions of this timeless classic I've EVER seen! The design is influenced by that most beautiful of 19th-century design movements, Art Nouveau, which has been an obsession of mine ever since I first encountered it, as an Art Major in college. Heck, if I had the money I would live in a house -- it wouldn't have to be a mansion, though -- totally surrounded by furniture, posters (especially those by Alphonse Mucha), lamps, and, of course, books, done in this style!

Although my favorite color is, and will always be, blue, it is at Christmastime that I gain a new appreciation for the color red, especially in a rich, velvety, wine shade. The background of this cover is done in this precise shade. (Interestingly, however, when I tilt my laptop screen at a certain angle, the background color looks brown.... Whatever shade it is, I LOVE it!!) Then there are those GORGEOUS, golden roses..... I can't get over the effect of this combination! The roses really stand out against this beautiful background, and the way they interlace is just.....sheer genius, not to mention exquisite.

In short, I'm in "Book Heaven" just now!!! BLISS!!! Beautiful things have also always attracted me, but when I see a beautiful BOOK, the visual delight I get is like a total.....RUSH. It's not necessary to be on drugs to feel such a thing, either. I get this feeling when something touches me deeply, especially in an aesthetic sense. This book certainly does that!

In addition to all of the above, this book cover totally exemplifies the beauty of the Christmas season. Although the font is a classic one, it's perfect for this cover. It's simple, yet, with the wine-colored background and those interlacing golden roses, it conveys the elegance of this, the loveliest time of year.

And now for my bibliophile's dilemma..... I COVET this book. I WANT this book. It HAS to be mine. You might have noticed, though, that I have not posted any information about this particular edition. I came across this cover on Pinterest, but have absolutely NO idea what publisher it's from, or who the BRILLIANT cover designer is, or how much it costs.... NOTHING.

What to do?! Well, maybe this book is a rare edition. It certainly looks that way, unfortunately..... I need to check out Alibris and Abebooks. I REALLY need to find this book!!!!

Meanwhile.... I am pining away for this book..... Santa, can you hear me? I'm DESPERATE here!! LOL.

  1. I hand mentioned before that I’d i had more disposable income I would start a collection of high quality books. I could see including thus edition. I wonder what the cost of this edition would be if you found it for sale. I wonder if it is illustrated. Unfortunately I also have to think thaf there are many old editors of A Christmas Carol floating around iout there. It would be neat if you could at least identify it..

    1. Hi, Brian!

Yeah....me, too!! And OF COURSE this edition would HAVE to be part of your collection, as well as mine!!

Oh, how I wish I could identify it, too.....sigh.... It's probably a very rare edition, as I have not been able to get ANY information on it, thus far!

Hope you, your wife, and family had a WONDERFUL Christmas!!

Thanks for the nice comment!! <3 :)

  2. Perhaps it actually IS an Art Nouveau edition? The original deluxe edition Dickens published is not the same, though it does have a garland surrounding the title. Anyway, very pretty indeed!

I used to ride trains to work every day which were so very old - the carriages, of course, not the engines - that they had beautiful Art Nouveau designs carved into the ceilings. Unfortunately they were very uncomfortable and known as “Red Rattlers” for good reason.

    1. Hi, Sue!

You know, you're probably right. Thus, this book could very well be a VERY rare edition, in which case, I will probably NEVER be able to find it.....sigh..... :(

I think I've seen a picture of that first edition, somewhere online. And yes, it does have a garland surrounding the title. It's not the one pictured above, though. It IS pretty, although I think the one above is just GORGEOUS!

Gee, from what you say about those train carriages, they should be retired and put in a railroad museum, where people can admire them, without having to ride them! Lol.

Thanks for the interesting comment!! Hope you and your family had a GREAT Christmas!! HUGS!! <3 <3 :) :)
