Book Blogger Hop No. 134: If I had an Instagram account.....

Welcome to the Book Blogger Hop,
hosted by Billy @

This Week's Question

Do you have an Instagram account?
If so, do you
only follow book folks?

(Submitted  by Elizabeth @

My Answer

It's a little ironic that this question should follow the one from last week, I think. Why? Because, if I'm having a hard time balancing work and blogging, then it stands to reason that I would limit my social media involvement. Right? Yes, many bloggers tweet their blog posts, and publish them on Facebook, Google +, Instagram, and what have you. It IS necesary, after all, to make sure people know your blog exists. There's a paradox here, though; maintaining an active social media presence is pretty time consuming. I do publish my posts, mostly on Twitter, and sometimes on Google +. As for Facebook, I have a personal page, as well as a fan page for A Night's Dream of Books, but stopped publishing my blog posts there because Facebook expects people who have fan pages to PAY in order for FB to put post links in other people's feeds. Otherwise, you get VERY limited exposure. Well, this would make sense if I had customers, but I don't make any money from this blog, so I've just stopped posting on my FB fan page. I do continue to post on Twitter and Google +, but rather sporadically.

As for Instagram, no, I don't have an Instagram account. I barely have enough time for the social media I've already mentioned! If I DID have one, though, I would not limit myself to following bookish folks. I'm also VERY interested in the arts, especially Fine Arts. Actually, I would be interested in following creative people -- whether writers, painters, photographers, filmmakers, sculptors, musicians, composers, or dancers.

Of course, writers and painters would be at the top of the list.

In the case of writers, I love several genres, from classics to literary fiction, to paranormal romance, to SF and fantasy, to Young Adult Fiction. So I would certainly have LOTS of great authors to follow!

Painters and sculptors? Absolutely! There are some contemporary artists that I wish I could meet in person..... just like I'd like to meet some contemporary writers in person.

Painters would be neck and neck with graphic designers, though, because I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE beautiful book covers! So I would follow anyone who designs covers that make me want to sigh with utter bliss......

Photographers would come next. I ADORE beautiful photographs, too! There are many wonderful photographers out there.

Musicians would be next. Anyone who can handle a piano or violin concerto would qualify for me to follow them. In addition to classical music, I also love classic rock, progressive jazz, current pop music, and electronic music such as trance, progressive house and chillout. Meditation music also counts.

There are many terrific modern composers, especially of electronic music, so I would follow them, as well.

As for dancers, I'm not that familiar with this category of creative people, but I would follow classic ballerinas, as well as dancers of more modern music.

Last but most definitely NOT least are other book bloggers! We book bloggers are, of course, creative people, too! It takes creativity not only to write reviews and other blog posts, but also to design one's blog and posts. Plus, we also fall into the category of "bookish people". So YAAAAAY for book bloggers!!

So these are the types of folks I would follow if I had an Instagram account. IF. Maybe one of these days I will. Who knows? If I can somehow have more time for online activities, then I will certainly consider it! Lol.

  1. I am in the same position Maria. Between blogging and everything else I spend more then enough time on social media. People seem to get a lot out of Instagram. It looks like a lot fun and it seems like one can do much with it. I guess that they call the network of bookish accounts “Bookstagram”.

Too bad that Facebook wants payment for fan pages. These days I mostly use Facebook to post links to my Blogposts.,

    1. Hi, Brian!

Yeah, I would guess most of us bloggers -- especially book bloggers, I would imagine -- are in the same boat! We just don't have enough time for blogging and reading, plus everything else in "the real world" we need to do....lol.

I've just visited several Instagram accounts held by the other commenters of this post, and yes, having an Instagram account DOES look like a lot of fun! And how funny that they call the network of bookish accounts "Bookstagram"! Lol.

Yeah, I was REALLY ticked off when I found out that FB expects people with fan pages to pay!! I still have the fan page for A NIGHT'S DREAM OF BOOKS, but I haven't posted anything on it for quite some time. I've seen the links to your own blog posts on your personal FB page. I did that for a while, some time back, but my FB friends are mostly not into books, so I stopped posting my blog post links there..... :(

Thanks for the nice comment!! <3 :)

  2. I've not started Instagram yet and have kind of put it off. If I did, I wouldn't use it a lot. However, I am doing a Dog Days of Summer challenge in August and they are going to be using Instagram so I can see me doing it for that month. It is hard to keep up on all these formats. In fact, I've just started using Twitter more. That reminds me, I need to see if I'm following you on Twitter :)

    1. Hi, Barb!

Yeah, I've been wanting to open an account for some time now, but have also put it off. I really don't have the time, what with work and everything.

I am on Facebook and Twitter, but have not been publishing that many of my blog posts. I don't see that it does that much good on either one. But on Facebook, I'm not posting on the fan page for this blog AT ALL. I'm REALLY ticked off at FB for expecting those with fan pages to PAY to get their posts promoted! Why don't they differentiate between blogs with actual, PAYING customers, such as those associated with a business, and blogs that are just for fun?

As for Twitter, I publish my blog post links sporadically. Many times, they are not retweeted. And some people just "like" my tweets, and don't retweet them. Yeah, I'm feeling a bit discouraged....

I saw that you followed me on Twitter! Thank you SO much!! I had already been following you for a while.

Thanks for the comment and Twitter follow!! You ROCK!! HUGS TO YOU AND THOSE LOVABLE PUPS, AND WOOF, WOOF TO THEM!! <3 <3 <3 :) :) :)

  3. Ohhhh I love Instagram! Although the algorithm kind of sucks sometimes. My insta is mainly where I follow fellow bookstagram accounts, authors and bookish shops but I also follow some pet accounts and a couple of celebrities that I love. I also have my history instagram account that I started back in September but I was thinking about it for years before I finally had the courage to make it. I also have a Facebook page for my blog but I don't use it a lot anymore to share my posts on. Mainly use it when I actually remember, which is not a lot. =/ But if you ever do get an Instagram feel free to let me know so we can connect on it. :D

    1. Hi, Steph!

Yeah, it does look like it's a LOT of fun! I've checked out a few owned by book bloggers I know. I just don't have the time to get on any more social media..... :(

I haven't posted anything on my FB fan page for this blog for a long time, either. As I explained above, FB expects us fan page owners to PAY so that our post links will get wide exposure. GRRRR!!! Not happening!

It's GREAT that you don't only follow bookish folks, but others, too! :) :)

I will DEFINITELY let you know if and when I get an Instagram account, for SURE!!

      Thanks for commenting!! HUGS!!! <3 <3 <3 :) :) :)

  4. I struggle with the balance part sooo much! I do have an Instagram but have a hard time remembering to post on a regular basis and don't really use it for blog stuff - it's mostly family and pets with the occasional book.

    1. Hi, Katherine!

Yeah, I think ALL of us book bloggers do! Lol.

I've checked out your Instagram account. I see that you do indeed use it for family things, as well as your pets. Really CUTE pics!! I do hope you start posting more bookish stuff on there, though.

If I had an Instagram account, you may be sure I would follow you!!

Thanks for commenting!! HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!!! <3 :)

  5. Totally agree with you, Maria.

Instagram takes a lot of time, but I have been enjoying using it.

    I mostly follow book folks.

I love how you listed painters, photographers, and musicians as posts you would follow. :)

You are best Blog Hop Answerer. :) :) Is “answerer” a word? LOL!!

ENJOY your weekend...we are having Florida weather here. :)

    1. Hi, Elizabeth!

I really do wish I had an Instagram account, as it looks like having one is a LOT of fun! However, as we've both stated, it DOES take a LOT of time!

Oh, I would DEFINITELY follow other folks, too! I'm VERY interested in the arts, so of course I would follow people in these fields! Glad you agree!! :) :)

Awwww.....you're SO SWEET!! Thanks for saying that! (BLUSH, BLUSH) <3 <3

I don't think "answerer" is a word, but who cares? LOL. And I LOVE all of your SUPER NICE comments!! You are one of my Best Blog Post Commenters!!! <3 <3

Oh, you had Florida weather this past weekend? I don't envy you at all!! LOL.

You have a great Fourth too

LOL on “answerer” - but as you said: “who cares?” It definitely expressed what we wanted to say. :)

      HUGS!!

    3. Hi, again!

Hey, would you mind taking OUR Florida weather up north with you? I HATE IT!! LOL. And send down some snow, if you can. (Maybe you could ask Santa for some, if he's not too busy surfing....LOL.)

Yeah, we made our point!!! LOL.

I imagine you're cooking up something special for the Fourth, right? ENJOY!!!! <3 :)

    1. Hi, Nicki!

Thank you for the compliment!! <3 <3

Maybe sometime in the future, I'll decide to get an Instagram account. I know that, because I don't have one, I'm missing out on participating in some blog tours..... :( I'm signed up with TLC Book Tours, for instance, and I could be getting FREE printed books for ALL of their tours, except that they sometimes give preference to Instagram account holders. So who knows? Maybe I'll get an Instagram account someday soon.....Lol.

      Thanks for commenting!! <3 :)

  8. Yes to all of your answers! That's why I don't bookstagram, too. Heck, I don't even have a personal account. It's been bugging me though how it would grow the presence of my blog since I am still a small blog sometimes I feel that I need all the exposure that I can get.

It sucks that Facebook also asks me every time if I want to pay for my posts to be promoted. I still post there anyway. What I do is join FB Groups dedicated to books or book blogging then I share my posts over there. :)

    1. Hi, Jennilyn!

YAAAAAY!! Glad you like all of my answers!! <3 <3

Yeah, the lack of time is my main issue. Sometimes I hardly have the time to BLOG. I'm hardly posting on Twitter anymore....my tweets nowadays have become VERY political, because I don't like the current U.S. president. I need to get back to posting more about books! Lol.

I have put up my blog post links on Google + in the past, and really need to get back to doing that. Again, it's lack of time..... It's hard enough to be able to keep up with replies to my comments, as well as comments back! Yeah, I like to reply to comments on my blog, and then go and comment back on the commenters' blogs. I feel this is the right thing to do, but again, it's LACK.OF.TIME. :) :)

Yeah, I'm REALLY ticked off at Facebook, too!!! They should really establish a difference between those blogs that have PAYING CUSTOMERS, and those that don't -- like mine, for example!! (And I'm sure yours, too.) Heck, if we don't make money from our blogs, then WHY should we be EXPECTED to pay FB for promoting our posts?! GRRRR.

I really like your idea of joining FB groups dedicated to books or book blogging! I might do just that! (IF I have the time.....LOL.)

      Thanks for the great comment!! <3 <3 :) )

  9. My Facebook page is completely neglected. I rarely remember to post therr and I keep telling myself to do so but I hate it... Twitter I love posting stuff on and tweetdeck means I can schedule a tweet or two to support my blog posts without having to constantly log in.
Instagram, I have, but I'm not very good at it. I don't post often and I think I have more pictures of random places and cats than I do of books. *Shrugs* It's like you said, you need to get your blog out there but its time consuming and when you already have enough demands on your time you dont want to add to it. :)
