Book Blogger Hop No. 131: My Most Read Author In The Past Two Years

Welcome to the Book Blogger Hop,

This Week's Question

What author have you read the
most in the past two years?

(Submitted  by Elizabeth @

My Answer

I thought at first that I wouldn't be able to say that I have read one author more than any other in the past two years. Since I'm such an eclectic reader, I'm constantly switching around to different authors and books. Sometimes, though, I will try to see a series through to the end. That's what happened with the Vampire Academy series. I did read the entire series of six books -- two of them in 2015, and the other four in 2016. So I guess I'll go with the author of these books: Richelle Mead.

Mead is a writer of Young Adult Fiction, specifically in the categories of fantasy, urban fantasy, and science fiction. Her VA series is immensely exciting and appealing to YA readers, and so is her spinoff series, Bloodlines, which I also want to read. It, too, consists of six books.

Mead's characterizations in the VA series are very vivid, and she puts you right into her characters' heads. The action is amazing, too! However, she also has slower passages, in which she delves into psychological conflicts between the characters. This is something I find totally fascinating, and as compelling as the action.

Another thing I love about this series is the world-building. Mead has no problem at all making the reader suspend disbelief, and plunge right into her world! She's a truly skillful writer, one who totally engages all of the reader's senses.

Not since reading my beloved Twilight Saga have I been so absorbed in a world of vampire characters -- specifically of the YA variety. I have also read four of the books in the Vampire Diaries series, by L.J. Smith, but didn't like them that much. (I read these in 2010.) As for the House of Night series, by P.C. Cast and her daughter Kristin Cast, the very first book, Marked, was quite disappointing for several reasons, although, paradoxically, I did like the plot. (I read this one in 2011.) However, that wasn't enough for me to love the book. Nor was it enough for me to want to go on to the rest of the books in the series.

It's been a totally different story with Richelle Mead, who is now one of my favorite YA authors! I have enjoyed her Vampire Academy series tremendously, and want to continue to enjoy her books!

Note to Self: Be sure to start on the Bloodlines series as soon as you can!

Here are the books in the Vampire Academy series. Click on each cover for access to my review of each book.

Scorpio Richelle Mead is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of urban fantasy books for both adults and teens. Originally from Michigan, Richelle now lives in Seattle, Washington where she works on her three series full-time: Georgina Kincaid, Dark Swan, and Vampire Academy.

A life-long reader, Richelle has always loved mythology and folklore. When she can actually tear herself away from books (either reading or writing them), she enjoys bad reality TV, traveling, trying interesting cocktails, and shopping for dresses. She's a self-professed coffee addict and has a passion for all things wacky and humorous.

    1. Hi, Katherine!

Yeah, blogging has a way of exposing you to many different authors, through other blogs, and memes like "Can't Wait Wednesday"! That's one of the reasons I enjoy blogging so much!!

I first came across Mead when I was looking for another good paranormal read, after The Twilight Saga. The Vampire Academy series has definitely been a thrilling one!

  2. Nice post.

I don’t know this author. Most likely because I don’t read this genre. :)

It sounds like a great fit for you. So glad these are enjoyable reads for you.

    Thanks for sharing, Maria.

    1. Hi, Elizabeth!

Thanks for the compliment!! <3 <3

Yes, I know you don't read this genre. And it is indeed a good fit for me, because I LOVE novels that include fantasy elements! :)

I would like to sample one of the books you enjoy reading, though, just to get out of my comfort zone!

You're very welcome for the sharing! And thanks to YOU for always leaving such nice comments!! HUGS!! <3 <3 <3 :) :) :)

    3. LOL. Well, actually, I did go out of my comfort zone when I read "Kiss Carlo", by Adriana Trigiani. I don't usually read these types of books, which are in the genre of "Women's Fiction". But I enjoyed this novel IMMENSELY! I certainly want to read more of Trigiani's books!!

      Thanks for commenting again!! <3 <3 <3 :) :) :)

    1. Hi, Nicki!

I've only read this series, so far. Now I want to get the Bloodlines series under my belt! I know it will be just as enjoyable as this one!

  4. These were very popular in my library. The girls loved them - they were never borrowed by boys. I’m afraid vampire romances don’t appeal to me - sorry! I managed to read Twilight, but never got further. I did buy two sets for the library, though! I felt that any book that kids were excited about and shared and curled up with in the schoolgrounds deserved to be stocked. When they had read the series, though, I gently asked if they might consider Dracula... šŸ˜

    1. Hi, Sue!

Yeah, these novels appeal mostly to females. I LOVE them, even though I'm not a young adult! Lol.

It's fine if you don't like vampire romances. Not everyone does. I LOVE The Twilight Saga, and have read all four books three times! I've read the first book FOUR times, including once in Spanish, as I'm fluent in that language. Lol.

Of course any book kids get enthused about deserves to be stocked in a library! It's great that you decided to stock the VA novels!

As for "Dracula", that's PRECISELY the type of vampire novel I do NOT like. That book is in the horror genre, which I don't read, as I HATE being scared!

It's interesting how vampires have morphed into romantic heroes who don't want to be monsters, and struggle against their vampire nature. I find this FASCINATING. Dracula, though.....SHUDDERS.....

Fortunately, there are books for all kinds of reading tastes!

  6. I remember how obsessed I was with Vampire Academy. I think I binge read them all in a short period of time. And then I was super excited when Bloodlines came out, which I've also all read. I'm still half in love with Adrian Ivashkov. ^_^ Other than those books I have only read Soundless by Richelle Mead, which I also really liked even though most readers seem to be hating it. But that's all I've read by her. I do want to read more of her other books.

    1. Hi, Steph!

Oh, I got obsessed with the VA series, too!! I didn't binge read them, but I did come close to doing so! And I definitely want to reread them at some future time. But I also want to get into the Bloodlines series!! And yes, I want to read more of her books!!

YAY for vampire romance novels, especially when they have GREAT action, like these books do!

      Thanks for the TERRIFIC comment!! HUGS!!! <3 <3 <3 :) :) :)

  8. Great answer! I really like how you've gone onto explain why you prefer her writing style and her books, as that definitely showcases your passion for her writing. Not to mention it's very insightful!

I haven't actually read the Vampire Academy series and I'm not familiar with Mead's work, but I have heard quite a lot of good things, so perhaps it's time I give her work a shot?

Feel free to check out my own answer if you wish!

    1. Hi, Charlotte!

Thanks for the compliment!! :<3 <3

Yes, I felt it necessary to explain why I read more books from this author than any of the others I read during the same time period. The funny thing is, though, that I was not aware I had done that. Lol.

Although there are many important elements to consider when reading any novel, I do think the writing style is one of the most important. If an author has a great writing style, I will definitely LOVE the novel! I'm so glad you found this part of my answer so insightful! <3 <3

Oh, you should DEFINITELY read this series!! I think you'll fall in love with it, just like I did! These are the only books of hers I've read, but, of course, I also want to read the Bloodlines series, which is a spinoff of the VA series. And I also want to read other books by her!

      Thanks for the TERRIFIC comment!! <3 <3 <3 :) :) :)
