This Week's Question

Would you take a book with you
when you go to your family's
Thanksgiving gathering/dinner?

(submitted  by Billy@

My Answer

Oh, but of course I would!! In fact, I always have! Lol. When I lived at home, my parents knew that I would soon stick my nose in a book, right after we had all consumed the turkey and other goodies. It was just something to be expected. They knew that books and I were inseparable! So, if the turkey's tryptophan didn't get me, a book certainly would! Well, to be quite honest, sometimes I did join in after-dinner conversation (and sometimes I did fall asleep after gorging myself on the turkey), but, since I lived at home, I felt perfectly comfortable getting lost in a book sometime during the evening. Well, I was usually expected to do the dishes afterward, since my sisters usually cooked. At times, Mom would have to 'gently' remind me of this. And she wasn't above coming up to me and snatching the book away, either! Lol.

Now that I'm married, things are a bit different. Hubby and I set off to my parents' house, and I just feel compelled to stuff at least a small paperback in my purse! Even if I am unable to read it at my parent's house, I still take a book with me. Actually, I NEED to take a book with me everywhere I go. So Thanksgiving dinner is no different. Furthermore, it HAS to be a printed book, too. Ebooks just don't do it for me, even though I have quite a few on my Android phone! Lol.

The family tradition of my sisters cooking the bird still continues, with me doing the dishes afterward. (Well, I also make the mashed potatoes and salad, too.) But now, since I no longer live at my parents' house, I do feel obliged to participate in the conversation. After all, I don't see them every single day. At some point, I might feel the urge to sneak off and catch a few pages of my book.....at least until I hear Mom inevitably calling out that I need to do my after-dinner duty! Lol.

  1. I think that a lot of bookish people do this.

Personally I find it difficult to maintain my concentration when I read on the run and on the fly. I even find if tough to read when I am on vacation.

I hope that you and your family have a great weekend Maria.

    1. Hey, Brian!

Oh, I'm sure a LOT of us bookish people do this!

When I lived at home, I was able to concentrate better on the big day. Now, though, I do interact with my family more, since I don't see them every single day. But I still carry a book to the feast with me! Lol. As you say, it's not easy to concentrate when you don't have a nice long block of time in which to read. I still carry a book with me, though, even if I won't be able to read it. I just feel better when I have a book with me!

I hope you and your family have a great weekend, too!

Thanks for the nice comment!! And Happy Thanksgiving if we don't "speak" again before then! :)

  2. I also have to carry a paperback around with me everywhere, even if I know I won't have time to read it. (And even though I carry a tablet with 1000s of books on it) Something about knowing the paperback is there just provides me comfort. Happy Thanksgiving! :)

    1. Hi, Kitty!

Oh, you're just like me! And I'm sure most of us bookish people do exactly the same thing! Lol.

I LOVE the following quote from your comment: "Something about knowing the paperback is there just provides me comfort." That's EXACTLY how I feel!! I get the warm fuzzies just from knowing my precious book is there! Lol.

Thanks for the nice comment!! Happy Thanksgiving to you, too!! :)

  3. I don't though it's tempting at times! Between having to help cook and making sure my youngest doesn't get into trouble and the whole conversation thing it just isn't going to happen! I do like settling down with a book after the crazy day!

    1. Hi, Katherine!

Oh, I MUST have a book with me at all times! Lol. So Thanksgiving Day is no different. Even if I know I won't be able to read it, I still NEED to have a book with me. Like Kitty said in her comment, it gives me a feeling of comfort.

It sounds like you have a big family get-together. We have a small family, so there isn't that much hustle and bustle. Still, I do help out with the preparations, although my "assigned" contribution is to do the dishes afterward. Lol.

Settling down with a book after "the crazy day" is DEFINITELY a great idea! It sure beats getting mowed down at a store on Black Friday! Lol.

Thanks for the nice comment!! Happy Thanksgiving!! :)

  4. I always have a book with me even though I usually don't get to read it at our gathering.

    Awesome answer as always, Maria.

I usually end up doing the dishes too.

Have a good weekend and a wonderful Thanksgiving.

    Happy Hopping!!

    1. Hi, Elizabeth!

Yup, I think most of us addicted bookworms carry books with us to the Thanksgiving feast! Lol.

How funny that you always end up doing the dishes, too! I've never been all that interested in cooking -- jut in eating! Hahaha!!

Hope you have good weekend, and a wonderful Thanksgiving, too!!

Happy Hopping to you as well! Thanks so much for the compliment and the lovely comment!! :)

  5. I generally end up on clean up duty too--that hasn't changed since I was a child and doesn't matter where I spend the holidays. I don't like to cook and so it is provides a nice balance, I think.

I like to have a book with me too--although my e-reader will do. I sometimes like to sneak off and read, especially if everyone seems to be watching sports on television or if I need a break from awkward conversation. Nowadays, you'll find me playing with my daughter, off in another room, if a relative isn't already doing so. It keeps me out of trouble. :-)

    1. Hi, Wendy!

Yeah....those of us who are not enamored of the joys of cooking will inevitably end up on cleanup duty. I sure don't mind the trade-off! Lol.

I do have several ebooks on my Android phone, but there's that special something about printed books.... And I love to carry one around with me everywhere, even if I know I won't have a chance to read it! Lol. Well, actually, the one place I don't carry a printed book to is the beauty salon. Once, a book I had with me actually got stained with hair dye! Yikes! So my phone's "library" now goes with me when I need to get my hair done! Lol.

My folks are not into football, so that rules out escaping with a book, haha! Also, we have a small family, so I do need to interact with them, especially since I don't see them every day, although we do talk on the phone regularly, of course.

How nice that you and Mouse go off to another room to play! Very sweet! And yes, that would definitely keep you out of trouble! Lol.

I hope all of you have a WONDERFUL Thanksgiving!! Hugs to you and Mouse!!

Thanks for dropping by and leaving such a lovely comment!! <3 :)
