My Answer

There have been several books that have had this effect on me.  However, there's one that stands out in my mind -- Book 6 of the Harry Potter series which is titled Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.  One of my favorite characters in the series met an untimely end, and it was a huge shock to me!  I really hadn't been expecting this at all.

After a couple of seconds in which my entire world came to a screeching halt, I suddenly burst into tears.  And couldn't stop for at least 15 to 20 minutes...   As I stated above, there have been several books that have made me cry.  None, however, caused such a strong reaction.  I mean, I cried very hard.  I sobbed and sobbed.  One would have thought that a relative of mine -- God forbid!  -- had died.

After I had calmed down somewhat, I put the book away, and didn't pick it up again for at least a week.  But then, when I tried to go back and finish it, I discovered that I simply could not do so.  I decided to give it more time.  About a month later, I still couldn't go on with the story!

This was about three years ago.  I have not been able to go back to the book.  So, I have read every novel in the series except half of Book 6, and all of Book 7.

Why did I have such an incredibly strong reaction?  I suspect that this character subconsciously reminded me of a departed relative of mine.  This relative and I were never very close, but I wish we had been.  Then the relative passed away, and the opportunity was lost forever.  I think the death of this character was somehow a reminder of that.  I can't say exactly who this relative was, though, because then I'd spoil things for whoever hasn't read this novel.

  1. Nice post. I read the books and then went to the movies with my sister. Since I had read the book, I knew what was coming and began crying before it ever happened. I can laugh now due to the look on my sister's face as I was handing her napkins telling her, 'just wait for it'. It was obvious as to who had read the book and who had not in the movie audience, when the event happened.

    1. Hi, Judith!

So you know exactly what I'm talking about. Since I haven't been able to finish this book, of course I'll never see the movie! Your sister was definitely surprised!

I don't think I'll EVER be able to go back to this book...although perhaps I could go on to Book 7 at some point. I don't know...

Thanks for the great comment!! :)

  2. Well, I haven't read that book yet. I'm at the fifth book in the series but I've seen the movies so I know what happened. Maybe I'll cry when I read it anyway.. we'll see :)

    1. Hi, Nilma!

Oh, you've seen the sixth movie? You're an emotionally strong person, then. If I were to actually see that scene, it would be really traumatic for me!

      Thanks for commenting back!! :)

  3. Oh man, Maria, you were really emotionally invested with book 6. The one that made me cry was book 7. The Harry Potter series are a beloved series so I completely get how you feel.

    Btw, Hola! Como estas?

    1. Hey, Vonnie!

Yes, I was definitely very much affected emotionally by this book...because of the death of this character. I'm sure you know who it is...

So, in your case, it was Book 7 that made you cry? Oh, Lord, now I REALLY don't think I'll EVER finish the series! How could J.K. do this to her fans?! Geez....

Estoy muy bien, gracias! Getting over a nasty cold.... I know it's been a while now, but I promise to come over and comment!! And not just for this hop!

Thanks for your visit and comment!! :)

    2. I don't think I've come across a book where I was so emotionally invested in it that I was not able to finish it. Maybe, like you said, the character in book 6 reminded you of that person in your life was what made you unable to read the rest of the book.

To be honest, book 6 was not my favorite. I felt that it dragged and that character's death didn't affect me a bit (it could be because I've seen the movies before so I knew what to expect?). Keep reading the series. The last one is long but it's perhaps one of the best in the series.

Ahora, enferma? Ewww...2012 was a horrible year for me. I was ALWAYS sick! It didn't help that I work in a school where it's infested with all kinds of germs because of the kids. My New Year's resolution for 2013 was actually not to get sick, lol. So far, I haven't broken my resolution :) Yay!!! Espero que te mejores!

    3. Well, maybe someday I'll be able to go back and finish...I don't know.

Yeah, this weird cold has been going around in my office. Not everybody has caught it, though. I went to the doctor about a week ago, and had a chest x-ray done. They took FOREVER with the results, but they finally came in, and everything was fine. Y estoy mejoranco!! Muchisimas gracias for preguntar!! :)

  4. I have had that reaction to a book before, Kim Harrisons, The Hollow Series did that to me in book 5. I was so mad, hurt, shocked etc... that it took me three days to come back to it.

    1. Hi, Ashley!

I haven't heard of that book, but I have heard of Kim Harrison. I hate it when an author kills off a beloved character like that. I realize it's their book, and they can do whatever they want with the plot, but still...it's very hard on us poor readers!

Thank you so much for following and commenting back!! :)

  5. I had the same reaction to the Harry Potter series, but I never cried.

    1. Yeah, I guess it's harder for most guys to cry. But I had never cried like this before...it must have been an unconscious trigger, from when that relative died years ago. That's the only way I can explain it. I still love the Harry Potter books, thoug!

      Thanks for commenting back!! :)
