This Week's Question

What is your go-to drink and/or
snack while reading?

(Submitted  by Kristin @

My Answer

To be honest, I don't usually drink or snack on anything while I'm reading. I tend to do that more when I'm blogging. Why the difference? Well, blogging doesn't usually require me to get lost in whatever post I'm creating. If I'm writing comments, the same thing is true. Reading, though, is another matter entirely! When I'm having a GREAT reading "session", I'm SO totally into the book I'm reading that I really have no clue as to what's going on "in the real world". Lol. If I were to break my concentration in order to reach over to my drink or snack, then I wouldn't enjoy my time with a totally fascinating book.

However, occasionally I will drink something while immersed in a book. But only VERY occasionally. When I do so, it will depend on the season. During the winter (if you can call our South Florida weather in December "winter".....) I do enjoy curling up with a book and a cup of hot chocolate, ESPECIALLY if I'm reading a Christmas-themed romance novel. Of course, I only do this when the temps fall into the 60s or, better yet, 50s. That's about as cold as it gets down here during the day! Lol. Sometimes we're lucky enough to get into the 40s, but only at night. Since I'm a TOTAL night owl, I LOVE to do my reading late at night. (And I mean LATE, folks! I frequently go to bed around 4:00 AM. And I get up around noon. YAAAAAAAY!!!!! ) So reading and sipping hot chocolate on a "cold" winter night is just PERFECT for me!

And there's eggnog, of course. That's a GREAT alternate to hot chocolate. (But only if it's spiked, and only during the Christmas season.)This an EXTREMELY rare thing for me to do, though, as eggnog is VERY fattening! Lol.

Another alternate to hot chocolate (especially when it's not THAT cold) is hot tea. I will drink mostly herb tea, but sometimes I drink either black tea (such as English Breakfast Tea), sweetened with honey and a little bit of Half and Half, or green tea, with the same treatment. Of course, at night I prefer herb tea, because black tea will make it too hard for me to get to sleep.

In the summer (which we actually have pretty much year-round, BOO-HOO!!) I will go with something cold, naturally. I NEVER drink iced tea, though. I just don't like tea except when it's hot.

Sometimes, especially when I want to feel like a sophisticated bon vivant, for example, I will indulge in a glass of Merlot, which is my favorite wine. But this is very rare, really. And I like it cold, too. When I get into "a wine mood", I LOVE to drink wine while reading late at night. It's just so....bohemian. It also makes me feel like I'm in Paris. Lol.

Do I ever eat anything while either reading or blogging? Well, sometimes I will eat peanuts (Cocktail Peanuts, by Planters, ONLY) in the middle of blogging. But I don't actually eat them with one hand, while pecking away with the other. No, instead, I stop whatever I'm doing on the blog, and take a little break to eat the peanuts. I just don't want to get the oily residue on the keys.

I NEVER eat any food while reading. AT ALL. I just don't want any crumbs or little pieces of peanut skin, or pieces of any type of food, falling onto my open book. Plus, any food that has a bit of oil in it (like the Planters peanuts) will get on my hands, and then God forbid I turn pages with those oily hands!! No. Absolutely NOT. When I do get hungry in the middle of reading, I will close the book (with a bookmark in it, of course, as I DO NOT fold pages over; that's a bookish SIN, for goodness' sake), get up, go into the kitchen, and get myself a little snack.

Again, I tend to avoid snacking while reading for the reasons stated above. I don't like having to break my concentration if a book REALLY has me on a roll. (Pun intended.) I can't say I'm truly enjoying a book if I interrupt myself with food (drinks, though, are less disruptive than food). So snacking and books? Not my thing, actually. My brain just doesn't like that, lol.

Writing all of the above is making me VERY nostalgic for some 50-degree temps, with a Christmas romance novel and my cup of hot chocolate..... Sigh.....

  1. This is a very interesting topic.

I tend to eat a lot of fruit. So I will sometimes snack on grapes on cherries while reading. I sometimes find that distracting and will actually stop my reading until I finish them.

I drink a lot of tea when reading. We get a bit colder here in New York :)

    1. Hi, Brian!

Indeed it is. And it's one I had never given much thought to before, either.

It's GREAT that you eat fruit! That's very healthy. I'm not that much into fruit myself. I see that you agree with me about food being distracting while reading. Definitely!

Yes, tea is a nice thing to drink while reading. Sometimes I'll drink that, as you know from this post.

Alas, the hot weather down here is pretty much relentless all year long..... While you guys up north envy us down here, some of us down here envy you up there! Not all of us, though. There are quite a few snowbirds living here in Miami, as well as in Miami Beach, Hollywood, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, etc. They're all happy to get away from the cold, lol. But I would certainly like to experience snow at least ONCE in my life! Lol.

Thanks for the nice comment!! <3 :)

  2. There is nothing better than drinking hot chocolate while reading during the holidays! <3

    1. Hi, Erica! I totally agree! Thanks for commenting!! <3 :)

  3. You are the best, Maria.

I love seeing your answers each week. I always look forward to them because I know your answers will be thorough and a treat.

I love hot chocolate and tea.

I know what you mean about grease on the keys. I have done that - boo hoo.

I will give you cold temperatures any time you like when it is freezing here. :)

    ENJOY the weekend.

    1. Hi, Elizabeth!

      Awwww....THANK YOU!! You're such a NICE person!! <3 <3 <3

I'm so glad you look forward to my answers each week. I have a LOT of fun writing them! And, as you can see, it's IMPOSSIBLE for me to write a SHORT answer! Lol.

Yes, hot chocolate and tea are GREAT reading companions! Although I don't usually drink anything while reading, when I do, these are my two favorite drinks. (Except when I want to feel that I'm in Paris, dahling! Lol.)

Yeah, grease on the keys is NOT good. So I do avoid eating something greasy with one hand, and typing with the other. :)

Oh, if only you could send those cold temps down here! Lol. We've already had weather in the 90s, and not just this month, but back in MAY. UGH. You see, the humidity down here is VERY high, so it makes the heat that much more unpleasant. And we don't really have seasons. Oh, well....

Hope you enjoy the weekend, too! Thanks for the lovely comment!! HUGS!! <3 <3 <3 :) :) :)

    2. I am loving our heat!!

I can't type with only one hand. Bad image for a typing teacher. :)

      Have a good day.

    3. Well, I'm doing laundry today, and let me tell you, it sure ain't no fun going out into that heat! Lol. We have communal washers and driers on each floor of our condo building, but I'm washing on another floor, because the machines on ours are not working well. So I had to carry laundry up two floors (in the elevator, of course). And according to Google, it's currently 89F in our area. I HATE IT!!!! Lol.

And no, you can't type with one hand! You have your reputation to uphold. Lol.

      Hope you have a good day, too!! HUGS BACK!! <3 <3 <3 :) :) :)

    4. It actually isn't as warm today. :(

LOL on upholding my are the best and the funniest, Maria. :)

      Hoe the laundry goes well.

    5. I'm glad to hear that it's not that warm up there! You LUCKY thing!! :)

Thanks for the compliment, Elizabeth! I think humor is an important component of daily living, especially when one has to deal with certain types of "people"

It's the SUPER NICE ones like you that make it all worthwhile!!! DEFINITELY!! <3 <3 <3

Yeah, everything went off without a hitch, lol. (That means that no one tried to take my clothes out because they wanted to wash theirs. I KID YOU NOT!)

      HUGS GALORE!!!!!! <3 <3 <3 :) :) :)

    6. I LOVE the heat and was disappointed. It did warm up a but later in the day. Can't complain, though, when I know at some point it will be ZERO or below. Hate that.

Great on your laundry. That is funny and sad that someone may take your clothes out.

    7. To be honest, I would not want to be in zero or sub zero weather, either.

Yeah, the condo association actually ALLOWS people to take somebody's clothes out of the washer or drier if they don't keep an eye on their laundry and take it out promptly. It's happened to me a couple of times. So you gotta keep an eye on your clothes! Lol.

      LOVE chatting with ya!! <3 <3 <3 :) :)

  4. Oooh! I enjoy some hot chocolate too during the winter months!
    Here’s my Book Blogger Hop!

Ronyell @ Rabbit Ears Book Blog

    1. Hi, Ronyell!

Yes, I think that most of us bookworms LOVE hot chocolate in the winter months, even if there's no real winter where one of those bookworms

      Thanks for commenting!! <3 :)

  5. Christmas romances do tend to require hot chocolate I think! I can relate to your non-wintery winters though here in Alabama it does get colder. I'm not sure I could handle living where it's really cold or snows a lot. I don't tend to snack when reading because I either forget about it or I eat it all! I do love the idea of a glass of wine while reading at night but I'm not much of a wine drinker so maybe I'll start making myself an Old Fashioned and feel like I'm setting somewhere in London?

    1. Hi, Katherine!

Oh, they certainly do!! That's an UNBEATABLE combination!! :)

Oh, you live in Alabama? Yeah, you do have colder weather up there. I know it gets much colder in the northern part of Florida than it does down here. Sometimes they have temps in the 30s, and even the 20s! So I guess Alabama would get similar or even colder temps.

I have never seen snow, as I've lived here in Miami most of my life (before the age of 9, I lived in Cuba, which is a bit cooler because of the ocean breezes, as far as I can remember). So I would definitely LOVE to see and experience snow. But I don't think I could live in it all the time, lol.

Yeah, I can relate to your "snacking problem", lol. That's another reason I don't snack while reading.

Yeah, sometimes I get into that mood, and then a glass of wine -- actually more like half a glass -- will really help me get into a book. (In which case I will then forget the wine is sitting there, unfinished. Lol.)

An Old Fashioned? You're so funny!! Yeah, that's an idea! And sitting in London sounds AWESOME!! That's another city I would LOVE to visit!!

Thanks for the TERRIFIC comment!! Have a WONDERFUL weekend!! <3 <3 :) :)

  6. Yes, a winter romance and a hot chocolate does sound good!

    1. Hi, Nicki!

Don't they? They certainly do go well together!

      Thanks for commenting!! <3 :)

  7. I don't usually eat, but I love when I have my morning coffee and read.

    1. Hi, Sam!

Yeah, I don't, either. I just don't think it's a good idea, because either crumbs will fall on my book, or pages will get stained.

I have my morning coffee, too! But that's usually while I'm blogging.

      Thanks for commenting!! <3 :)

  8. I love to snack while reading! I think that is one of the reasons I love my Kindle Fire, it wipes off. :)

    1. Hi, La La!

Yeah, if you read on a Kindle, that's a great advantage for snacking while reading!! Lol.

      Thanks for commenting!! <3 :)

  9. LOOOOOL I can totally see myself in your post XD I'm a night owl too (and I wake up at noon too..). I don't eat while reading for the same reason (my books are too precious xD !). But I don't drink either. I'm just too much immerse into my book that I don't do another thing. My eyes are just stuck on the book and my brain in its world
