This elegant Young Adult novel captures the immigrant experience for one Indian-American family with humor and heart. Told in alternating teen voices across three generations, You Bring the Distant Near explores sisterhood, first loves, friendship, and the inheritance of culture--for better or worse.

From a grandmother worried that her children are losing their Indian identity to a daughter wrapped up in a forbidden biracial love affair to a granddaughter social-activist fighting to preserve Bengali tigers, Perkins weaves together the threads of a family growing into an American identity.

Here is a sweeping story of five women at once intimately relatable and yet entirely new.

Why I can't wait for this one!

Well, first off, I LOVE the cover!! It's a very unique and beautiful one!! As for the plot, I can really relate, since I'm an immigrant myself. The clash of generations, as the younger members of an immigrant family strive to join 'the melting pot', while the older ones strive just as hard to hold on to time-honored traditions....I have lived through this.  Besides, I really do need to read more diverse books. This one looks absolutely WONDERFUL!!

Mitali Perkins was born in Kolkata, India, and immigrated to the States when she was seven years old. She's written several books for young readers, including Bamboo People, Rickshaw Girl, Monsoon Summer, and Secret Keeper. She is also the editor of an anthology: Open Mic: Riffs Between Cultures In Ten Voices. Mitali maintains a website  and blog where she chats about books between cultures.

  1. This looks good. Sometimes I wonder of books like this should be called YA as they seem to transcend the genre.

Immigration is such a relevant topic these days but as we know it has always been an important part of The American Experience. Based on the book's description, it sounds like it touches upon themes that have applied to Immigrants to America going back a very long time.

    1. Hi, Brian!

It SURE does!! I DEFINITELY want to read it!! And I do agree with you; some of these YA books do seem to transcend the YA genre. That's SO COOOOOOL!!!

Yes, it's true that immigration is "an important part of The American Experience", as you say. Very well put! This country has always had a reputation as a refuge for all nations, and indeed, its people reflect ancestry from all, or perhaps most, of the nations of the world! Trump seems to have forgotten that. Even the Statue of Liberty proclaims it! Here's that time-honored text: "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses, yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore, Send these, the homeless, tempest tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door." The author of these beautiful lines was Emma Lazarus. I found this at the following link: https://www.scrapbook.com/poems/doc/3061.html

This is what America has ALWAYS been known for! It's so sad that one man is hell-bent on reversing this beautiful American tradition....and HECK, his own wife is an immigrant!!!!!

Yes, this book definitely touches upon themes that apply, and have always applied, to every immigrant group that has arrived upon these shores, whether from England, Ireland, Germany, Poland, Mexico, Cuba, or SO many other lands.

And I think that the blending of cultures is such a BEAUTIFUL thing, too!! Although I basically consider myself an American, I do retain some Cuban traditions, such as the "cafecito" in the morning, or at other times of the day. I LOVE my black beans and rice, or "moros", which is the same thing, but all mixed up together. Family is extremely important to those of us with Cuban ancestry. And we have this GREAT love of music and dancing, too!

Also, our revered national poet is Jose Marti, who wrote the very beautiful poem, "Los Zapaticos de Rosa" ("The Little Pink Shoes") He's also well-known for "La Edad de Oro" ("The Golden Age"), a beautiful collection of stories, poems, and articles for a children's magazine he published in Cuba. Above and beyond this, he's the hero of Cuban independence, as he fought, and died, in the Spanish American War.

It's such a WONDERFUL thing, when so many diverse nationalities and ethnic groups make up this gigantic quilt known as The United States of America!!

I'm really looking forward to reading this novel, so as to learn more about Indian traditions!! I already love the food, as well as the music! Bring on Palak Paneer and the sitars!!

Thanks for the very nice comment!! <3 <3 :) :)

    1. Hi, Verushka!

Oh, SO glad you like my choice!! Yes, this is indeed a STUNNING cover!! And the story sounds SO powerful, as well!! I can certainly relate, although I'm not Indian! In fact, I'm a Cuban-American. But the immigrant experience is VERY similar for every immigrant. You find yourself torn between your established culture, and the American culture. In time, it seems that the blending of the two cultures is the BEST thing that can possibly happen!

Thanks for the nice comment!! I sure wish I could meet you in person, so we could sit down and chat about our two different cultures! BTW, I LOVE Indian food and music!! HUGS!! <3 <3 :) :)
