Stacking The Shelves #8

This is a weekly book meme/blog hop hosted by
Jennifer, Lili, Stephanie and Tynga @ Tynga's
Reviews!  As the title implies, this is all about
sharing the books you're adding to your shelves,
be they physical or virtual.  For the complete
rules and to sign up, just click on the link above.

This week's haul!

I have decided to start including my nonfiction acquisitions, as well.  Although I have created a second blog, meant strictly for nonfiction books, I haven't been able to dedicate much time to it.  That's because I have two jobs, so my time is pretty limited....

 Books Bought

Lynn Cullen
Hardcover, 392 pages
Putnam Adult
March 23, 2010
Art, Historical Fiction, Literary Fiction

This is a novel based on the life of a
little-known Renaissance artist, named
Sofonisba Anguissola.  Unfortunately, female
artists have until very recently not
received their due in the history of art.
Anguissola's story is riveting!
She becomes court painter to King Felipe II
of Spain, and is reluctantly drawn into
court intrigue.

(Watersong #1)
Amanda Hocking
Hardcover, 320 pages
St. Martin's Griffin
August 7, 2012
Fantasy, Paranormal Romance,
Young Adult Fiction

I've been wanting to read the novels
of this very talented young author
for some time now...
I might very well begin with this one.
This mermaid story sounds
like a different take on the traditional type
of story.  It has a scary atmosphere...
I'm intrigued!

(Drake Chronicles #5)
Alyxandra Harvey
Trade Paperback, 320 pages
Walker Children's Books
June 19, 2012
Paranormal Romance, Urban Fantasy,
Young Adult Fiction

I had never heard of this author before,
but that cover drew me in.
It looks very intense, as well as romantic!
Of course, I love the plot, which
features vampires, my favorite
paranormal creatures!
I have already put the first four books
on my Amazon wish list.

(Majipoor - LordValentine #1)
Robert Silverberg
Hardcover, 466 pages
Harper & Row Publishers
March 1, 1980
Fantasy, Science Fiction

With several editions to choose from,
including more recent ones,
I chose this one because of the horse
pictured on the cover.
This looks like an interesting blend
of fantasy and science fiction.
It's gotten mixed reviews, but I still
want to read it.  It's by
Robert Silverberg, after all!

(signed)
Dr. Eric Pearl
Trade Paperback, 223 pages
Hay House
April 1, 2003
Health, Metaphysical, Nonfiction

I came across this book at a local bookstore
well-known for author signings.
The cover looked interesting,
so I stopped to take a closer look.
The book deals with miraculous healings,
which the author claims
anyone who 'reconnects' to universal
energy is capable of performing.
I just had to investigate further, so I
promptly bought the book!

The 7 Central Practices to Awaken
Heart and Mind
Roger N. Walsh
Hardcover, 320 pages
John Wiley & Sons
September 10, 1999
Spirituality, Nonfiction

The subject matter of this book has
long fascinated me, although
I haven't discussed it frequently on this blog.
This book, based on extensive research,
deals with the spiritual elements
common to all the great religious traditions.
Dr. Walsh shows how they can be
harmoniously integrated to achieve
profound spiritual growth.

  5. I am extremely interested in The Creation of Eve, Maria. I love looking at your hauls - there is always something new for me in them. I will look into Anguissola, I find it really inspiring reading about women who left their mark in mostly male dominant history. Happy Sunday!

  6. Looks to be some very great books.

I read "Lord Valentine's Castle" years ago and I remember loving it. Fantasy books can be so full of cliches, I remember this one being refreshingly different and filled with interesting ideas. IIt does not have a lot of action so readers hoping for such might be disappointed. Silverberg is one of my favorite science fiction/fantasy writers.

If you read it I would love to hear what you think about it.

  7. Hi, Kara!

When I first saw "The Creation of Eve", I was ecstatic!! The history of art has long been male-dominated, and women like Anguissola have simply not been recognized as they should have. We women really must familiarize ourselves with these often neglected female artists!

I'm so glad that you always find something new in my hauls!! I do with yours, too!

Thanks for the super nice comment!! :)

  8. Hey, Brian!

You know, I might have read one of Silverberg's novels years ago, as a teen. But I don't remember which one...it's on the tip of my tongue, though.

What attracted me to this one was the cover. I'm a HUGE sucker for horses on book covers. Of course, Silverberg is one of the greats of SF, as well as fantasy, so, when I saw this book on eBay, I grabbed it! It's covered with Mylar, too!

I am definitely going to read and review this one! I don't know when, but I sure will try to get it in this year!

Thanks for always leaving such great comments!! :)
