In the violent country of Ludania, the classes are strictly divided by the language they speak. The smallest transgression, like looking a member of a higher class in the eye while they are speaking their native tongue, results in immediate execution. Seventeen-year-old Charlaina has always been able to understand the languages of all classes, and she's spent her life trying to hide her secret.  The only place she can really be free is the drug-fueled underground clubs where people go to shake off the oppressive rules of the world they live in. It's there that she meets a beautiful and mysterious boy named Max who speaks a language she's never heard before . . . and her secret is almost exposed.

  4. Hi, Rivie!

Well, I recommend the first three to all PNR/urban fantasy fans!! They look GREAT!! As for the SF books, not everyone likes those, but I am certainly a fan of the genre!

Gotta check out "Soul Walker". Thanks for commenting!! :)

  7. More old classic science fiction stories! Awesome!

It has been years since I have perused any of the anthologies. My guess is that you will find some stories that are very dated in terms of both technology as well as predictions for society. Others will likely be timeless!

  8. Hey, Ula!

I had "The Pledge" on my TBR list already, but didn't own the book. Then I came across it when I discovered a new bookstore, "Books and Books", near my job! There's a sticker on the cover announcing that the book is signed, too!! So I snapped it right up!

I'll be checking out your haul. Thanks for commenting!! :)

  10. Hey, Brian!

Gee, you're the only one commenting who seems to be interested in these classic SF anthologies... That's really too bad. I have always LOVED SF!! The thing is, I love reading anything that's not too closely related to this boring, mundane reality we have to live in...

I suppose some of these stories will, indeed, be dated, as you have pointed out. Heck, that happened with the "Star Trek" series... However, in terms of the elements of fiction, I don't think these stories could ever be dated. Great fiction will always follow certain time-tested patterns that make it just that -- GREAT. So, from this perspective, these stories are indeed timeless!

Unfortunately, the science fiction genre doesn't seem to be very popular these days...I hardly see it on book blogs. And there aren't that many blogs dedicated to it, either. Hopefully, that will change! Although I ADORE paranormal romance and urban fantasy (especially in the YA genre), I would never give up reading SF!

WOW. You really got me going! Thanks for the thought-provoking comment!! :)
