Why do I love this cover?

This cover is obviously inspired by the famous one for Twilight, by Stephenie Meyer.  After that novel became a worldwide hit, several covers were produced  with the image of hands (usually female) holding something out to the viewer.  In this case, it's a beautiful, dark red rose.

Although this imagery may have been a little overused by now, I still love the cover of Dark Road to Darjeeling (needless to say, I've loved the one  for Twilight for a long time now), because of the bold shapes, that contrast with the delicacy of some details, and the soft colors that contrast with the dark red of the rose.

The pastel orange of the dress worn by the cover model is especially beautiful, with those folds that shade into a darker tone.

The white gloves are simply exquisite!  I love the little buttons on the wrists, as well as the small, wrinkled folds that travel up the arms.

The light gray jacket (that's what it seems to be) that covers the dress is also quite beautiful.  Its color nicely complements those of the gloves, rose, and dress.

I also like the font used for the title.  I think it has a little of the flavor of India.  My only complaint regarding it is that I wish it were bigger.  (The author's name should be a little smaller, in my opinion.)

In short, this is a gorgeous cover, one that captures the eye right away.  It's soft, feminine, and yet, the large shapes ensure that it also makes a bold visual statement.  Further contributing to the old-fashioned charm of this image is the fact that the edges of the cover are dark.  This reminds me of a type of 19th-century photograph called a daguerreotype.  I think this renders the image even more beautiful, and even adds poignancy to it.

Unfortunately, I have been unable to get any information about the photographer who took this gorgeous picture.  The book's credits page does not mention this person at all, which is rather sad....Had it not been for that cover, I don't think I would have ever noticed this book at all, since I don't normally read mysteries.  I might very well start with this book, though, just because of that luscious cover!

Excerpt

I put my head down against the rain  and hoped they would let me pass.  No need to panic yet, I told myself.  As I stepped closer, Saul drew closer, his fists hanging at his side.  Rain had soaked the men, but they didn't seem to notice or care.  I stopped a few feet away and looked up as they moved around me.
"Are you lost, lass?" Saul asked.  He didn't look as if he had drunk anything.  "Give us all your money and you can be on your way.
I didn't have anything on me and told them as much.  Saul removed a small dagger.  "You don't want me to mess up that pretty face, so do as I say."
The others had created a full circle around me, barricading me against escape.  Their breaths filled my breathing space; alcohol hit me like a slap on the face....along with the knowledge that drunk men were dangerous men.
"I said give me your money now!"  Saul warned me one last time.
I looked around, trying to see if I could see anyone, but their large forms blocked my view.  I tried to relax my racing heart and felt for my dagger.  I had to keep it together.
"I'm afraid I have nothing to offer you, except...."  My stomach turned as I mimicked Dea's actions, running my hand aimlessly along his chest, but that's as far as I went.
    Saul laughed.
"You don't interest me."  His face turned into a snarl as he grabbed my waist, bringing his knife closer.
I was out of options.  I slid my knife with my free hand out of my waist band.  A large hand grabbed my other wrist.

 Excerpt

Food or sex?  Food or sex?  Food or....
Offering me his hand, he bowed and said, "Come, my queen, your feast awaits you."
Food it is, then.  Grinning at the unexpected playfulness, I regally presented my hand and allowed him to lead me to my seat.  He poured the wine and held up his glass.
    "Slainte!"
I touched my glass against his and answered, "Slainte."
"We have another day in Paris.  What would you like to do with it?"  he asked while filling my plate for me.
I watched with amusement as he cut up my chicken and tore off a chunk of the warm bread.  Who are you and what have you done with Killian?  He sat the plate in front of me and picked up a piece of the crispy meat with his fingers.  Before I could answer his question, he held the morsel to my lips.  I opened my mouth like a baby bird.
Sighing with pleasure, I said, "Mm, that's so good."
With a grin, he sliced a piece for himself while I chewed.  He slipped another piece between my lips, allowing his fingers to linger longer than necessary.  A tingle of electricity wove its way down my spine and I took a calming sip of wine.
What did I want to do with him in Paris, the most romantic city in the world?  That had to be a trick question.  I mean really.  The only thought that came to mind was sex.... Of course it was hard to think of anything else with his fingertips brushing my lips and his eyes undressing me.  I tried to give him a seductive stare across the table and flinched away at the flash of raw desire in his eyes.  He was taking his time right now but those eyes promised no such restraint later.  I was having a really hard time eating when I only wanted to drag him to the bed.
"Eat, Princess.  You have to get your strength back.  Did you know that sex burns off a thousand calories?  When you consider your high metabolism, you'll probably burn triple that much by the end of the night.  You're too weak for that now.  Probably we should wait another week or two, just to be safe."
