SCIFI MONTH 2018 Wrap-Up Post

This is my wrap-up post for this exciting event, hosted by
Lisa @ Dear Geek Place
and imyril @ onemore.org!!

The event started out on November 1st, but alas, I didn't find out until November 8th, and I was unable to publish my announcement post until November 12th.....  : (

I'm VERY glad that I DID find out about this, though, because next year, I can start as of the very first day! And just how did I find out? Well, it was thanks to my blogging buddy, Sarah Higbee, who blogs at Brainfluff! Sarah is also an SF writer herself.

Here's a rundown of the posts I published for SCIFI MONTH, so anyone who happened to miss one or more can access them right here!

1.) Announcing Sci-Fi Month 2018!!! In this post, I described the event, mentioned how I found out about it, and included the title of the one book I was planning to review. I would have wanted to review more books, but, since I was late joining in, that was just not possible....

2.) Teaser Tuesday/Sci-Fi Month!! These Broken Stars, by Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner This is a weekly meme, hosted by Ambrosia @ The Purple Booker. For this week, I decided to combine it with SCIFI MONTH, since the book I pulled my quotes (teasers) from is a science fiction novel. It's also a YA book.

3.) Shelf Candy Saturday/Sci-Fi Month!! Electric Gardens, by M. Black This is my own meme, which features beautiful book covers. In honor of SCIFI MONTH, I decided to feature a beautiful SF cover! This book is another YA novel.

4.) Teaser Tuesday/Sci-Fi Month!! Refugee, by Piers Anthony This is another weekly post for this meme. In this one, I feature a book I've read in the past, and would like to re-read. It's an adult novel.

5.) Can't Wait Wednesday/Sci-Fi Month!! Undying, by Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner Here I'm featuring yet another Young Adult SF novel, by the two very popular YA authors of These Broken Stars, mentioned above.

6.) SCIFI MONTH BOOK REVIEW!! Spock Must Die! by James Blish This is the book I mentioned in my SCIFI MONTH Announcement Post. Blish was one of the first authors to write a science fiction novel based on Star Trek TOS (The Original Series). He also wrote adaptations of the original episodes, in a twelve-book series.

7.) Book Blitz/Giveaway/Sci-Fi Month!! Neron Rising, by Keary Taylor This is an event hosted by XPresso Book Tours, for which I am a host. This novel combines Dystopian Fiction, Science Fiction, Fantasy, Romance, and Suspense. The giveaway has four days left!

8.) Can't Wait Wednesday/Sci-Fi Month!! Agency, by William Gibson For this week, I featured the newest book by the bestselling author, who is famous for such novels as Neuromancer and Mona Lisa Overdrive.

9.) S.J. Higbee, SF Author!! This is the SF writer who was instrumental in my finding out about SCIFI MONTH! In this post, I feature her SF trilogy, as well as anthologies she has contributed stories to.

I do wish I could have contributed more posts to SCIFI MONTH, but again, when I found out about it, it had already been underway for several days.

I'm really looking forward to participating with more posts, and, hopefully, at least three book reviews, next year! I still had a lot of fun, though, preparing my own posts, as well as checking out those of the other participants!

I hope to see all of you SF fans again next year!! (Although of course I will be publishing more SF posts next year, even if it's not SCIFI MONTH!!)

S.J. Higbee, SF Author!!

This is my final post for this exciting event, hosted by
Lisa @ Dear Geek Place
and imyril @ onemore.org!!

For more information, please refer
to my Announcement Post
for this event!!

As my final post for SCIFI MONTH, I'd like to feature my blogging buddy and SF/fantasy writer, S. J. Higbee!

Those of you who have participated in SCIFI MONTH have no doubt seen her own posts for this event, if you have visited the Master Schedule, which, by the way, you can find HERE. For those who have yet to do so, however, I am contributing this informative post, as I do think her work is worth delving into, from what I know of it.

S.J., or Sarah Jane, lives in the UK. She was born in the historic market town of Ringwood, in Hampshire, England. According to the Wikipedia article on this town, ".....it is located on the River Avon, close to the New Forest and northeast of Bournemouth. It has a history dating back to Anglo-Saxon times, and has held a weekly market since the Middle Ages." (Source: Wikipedia) Sigh....I've always wanted to visit England....

Fridays Cross, Ringwood, England

I met Sarah through her fascinating book blog, Brainfluff (see link below), on which she posts reviews of great SF and fantasy books, and participates in memes such as "Teaser Tuesday", which features quotes, or teasers, from current reads, and "The Friday Face-Off", in which several different covers for the same books are discussed and compared.

It was fateful that Sarah became a science fiction writer; after all, she was born on the very same day that the Russians launched "Sputnik"! And I think that Ringwood has had an influence on her fantasy side. It's the sort of quaint town that's probably hiding mythological creatures around every corner.

She is the author of the Sunblinded Trilogy, and I LOVE the covers of all three books! I have them all on my Android phone's Kindle app, but I DEFINITELY want to get the printed books! In fact, the first one in the trilogy, Running Out of Space, is also available in a trade paperback edition. I'm crossing my fingers that the other two books will soon be released as trade paperbacks, too!

This trilogy follows the exploits of one Lizzy Wright, who has wanted to be a member of the crew of the merchant ship "Shooting Star" for the longest time....and finally gets her wish. Of course, this book contains a feminist theme, as does the rest of the trilogy. Women should be, and should ALWAYS have been, in space, and it looks like Higbee has envisioned a future in which women fully participate in space adventures just as much as men do.

Sarah has also written short stories and some poetry. She has contributed to two short story collections: While the Morning Stars Sing: An Anthology of Spiritually Infused Speculative Fiction, and Eve of War

I'm really looking forward to starting the Sunblinded Trilogy as soon as the new year kicks off! Right now, I'm getting ready for the Christmas season, during which I enjoy reading Christmas-themed books, especially contemporary and historical romance novels.

I also want to read Sarah's  short stories in both volumes mentioned above. Thankfully, these are indeed available in trade paperback editions.

These are S.J. Higbee's books!

Book Blogger Hop No. 122: Meeting Authors!!!!!

Welcome to the Book Blogger Hop,
hosted by Billy @

For more information, and

This Week's Question

What authors have you met,
and where?

(Submitted  by Elizabeth @

My Answer

I have definitely been lucky enough to meet some authors in the last few years! All of them have been YA authors, too.

In August of 2007, I met Stephenie Meyer, the author of my beloved Twilight Saga. Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures of her, but I do have the copy of Eclipse that she signed for me. (See the picture below.) This book had just been published, too. Stephenie did a presentation and signing at the Coral Gables War Memorial Youth Center. (Coral Gables is a small city surrounded by the much larger city of Miami. It was originally a planned community created by George Merrick during the 1920s land boom. -- Source: Wikipedia) There were SO many people there! Most of them were teen girls, and some were accompanied by their mothers. But there were some adult fans present, as well.

In 2011, three YA authors came to a Coral Gables Indie bookstore -- Books and Books! This is a beautiful bookstore, located in the heart of downtown Coral Gables. The three authors were Maggie Stiefvater, Meg Cabot, and Libba Bray. I met Stiefvater and Cabot, and bought the books they were presenting, as well. Maggie's book was Forever, and Meg's was Abandon. If you'd like to read the entire post of that event, click HERE.

Here I am with Maggie Stiefvater.

   Meg Cabot and I.

In November of 2013, I attended the annual Miami Book Fair, which takes place in downtown Miami, on the grounds of Miami Dade College, Wolfson Campus. Of course, I had a BLAST!! Plus I bought several books! I also met three more YA authors -- Kami Garcia, Alex Flinn, and Holly Black. I bought Beautiful Redemption, by Kami, and Towering, by Alex. If you're interested, you can access the entire post of that event HERE.

Kami Garcia and I smiling for the camera!

Alex Flinn meets Maria the Book Addict!

Holly Black and Maria Behar love books!!
And Holly writes them, too!

In November of 2015, I again attended the Miami Book Fair, and this time, I met Melissa de la Cruz! She was presenting her new book, Isle of the Lost, which she signed for me!! YAAAAY!!! Interested in reading more? Click HERE!

Of course, a TRUE bookworm (btw, I've heard that we should now call ourselves "book dragons", instead of "bookworms") is NEVER satisfied with meeting just a few authors. We will ALWAYS want to meet more!!! So I'm looking forward to my next opportunity to meet more authors -- whether of YA or adult fiction -- at the next exciting book event in my area!!

This long-awaited book is finally HERE!!!! Potterheads (one of which I proudly consider myself to be!) the world over are rejoicing!! The book is not only here, in my local bookstores, but in every bookstore in the world that has been offering Rowling's famous, beloved series for sale for many years now!! The play itself premiered in London on July 30th!

Of course, I did my Google search well ahead of this release, to find out when my closest B&N store would hold its own party. And then I prepared! Since I sadly had to donate my Gryffindor robe, tie, and scarf to Goodwill when we moved in March of 2015, I went to Amazon and ordered new ones! I also ordered a white blouse to wear under my robe, but the one that arrived was too small, so I rushed over to Ross, a local discount store, on Friday, July 29th, and found one that fit. I also bought a sleeveless gray top that doubled pretty well as the type of 'sweater/vest' worn by the characters in the films. Last but definitely NOT least, I also ordered my Hermione Granger wand from Amazon. Finally, I was totally ready!

 Maria as Hermione Granger

The festivities began on Saturday, July 30th, at 8:00 PM. I happily arrived at the store, where other Potterheads had already begun to congregate. Just before I walked in, though, something made me check my purse, and I discovered that I had left my debit card at home! And I had NO cash in the purse!! HORRORS!!! I got a hasty cash loan from my husband, who was dropping me off, so, thus in a calmer frame of mind, I entered the store.

I went to a table to sign in and get my red wristband (so as to get in line for the book later). At the table, I was told that I could get the book much faster, through their "VIP line", if I applied for a B&N Mastercard. I would then go to the second floor to get the book, as soon as it was released. I accepted a pamphlet about the card, and went to grab a bite at the snack bar, as I had not eaten anything for hours, due to my excitement. After consuming my Farmer's Wrap (YUMMY) and chocolate biscotti (DELICIOUS), I went back to the sign-in table, telling the people assisting new customers that I had changed my mind about getting the Mastercard. So then I got a regular red wristband. Then I started wandering through the crowds to see what was going on.

There was already a long line for the Sorting Hat, which I was in for a while, and then left, as it was taking too long. Besides, I would NEVER want to be in any other house except Gryffindor, anyway. Lol.

Just after I left the Sorting Hat line, I was approached by three girls with a list of names. One of them asked me if I wanted to participate in a Harry Potter Look-Alike Contest. I laughed, telling them that I was really Hermione Granger, but agreed to participate. So I wrote my name down on the list, and they thanked me and walked away.

As I continued to walk around, I noticed that tables had been set up with different activities. There were activity sheets -- such as trivia quizzes, word search and maze puzzles, and, to my GREAT delight, sheets from one of the Harry Potter coloring books (which I've since ordered, of course!). There were coloring sheets for each of the Hogwarts House crests. I grabbed several, and went over to a table in the Children's Department, as they had two tables with chairs, and I preferred to sit. (The other tables that were set up, at the front of the store, were higher, and there were no chairs.)

So I happily sat there and colored one of the Gryffindor crest sheets. I really got into it, too! It's been too long since I've done any coloring, so I'm really glad I actually finished this! I Googled the crest and modeled my coloring on the images I found online. The colors of the helmet and lion are not exactly right (they're supposed to be a metallic gray color), but heck, I had to work with what was available.

There are actually several different versions of this crest online. The one worn by the girls below is one of them. I prefer the one I picked, as it has more color variety.

Then there was an announcement for the participants in the Harry Potter Look-Alike Contest, so I picked up my activity sheets, and rushed to the front of the store, where the contest would be held.

When I got there, a small crowd had already gathered. We contestants all lined up in front of some large bookcases, and one of the store employees, also in costume, began introducing each contestant. Each of us stepped forward, gave her our names, and then bowed to the audience, which then clapped. Oh, I just LOVED it!! This was so much fun! The clapping was loud or not, according to how well each contestant fit the HP description. Cheers also went up for the best costumes.

There were two contestants wearing full Slytherin costumes, with robes and neckties. There was even a young mother in full Gryffindor costume, carrying a baby who was a very young Harry Potter, as he was wearing Gryffindor regalia, and even had a little lightning mark drawn on his forehead. I took a picture of them, but it came out too blurry, so unfortunately, I couldn't post it.

There were also two young girls wearing HP T-shirts, with Gryffindor banners hanging down their backs. Other contestants were not wearing full costumes, but only bits and pieces of recognizable HP clothing.

The winner was a young boy who was wearing a regular T-shirt and jeans, but whose black HP glasses, and black hair, made him look the most like Harry.

Several runners up were also picked, and I was one of them! As my prize, I got a small, ceramic, metal and wood replica of Hedwig the owl, in her golden cage. In the box, there was also a small booklet of HP stickers. So cute!!

Right before 11:00 PM, I went back to the snack bar to get a bottle of water. There was a long line, so, as I stood there, I began working on a word-search activity sheet. Then, at exactly 11:00 PM, the announcement came for those with the green, red, and white wristbands to line up for the book. I ran to the front of the store, bottle of water in hand. I had already drunk half of it, too. Well, I figured I'd pay for it when I got the book.

The line was already very long when I got there. It snaked, or should I say, slithered around some bookcases, toward the front registers. So I stood there, and began chatting with two ladies, one in front of me, and one behind me.

During a little break in the conversation, I decided to check the  time on my cell phone, and saw that I had a missed call from hubby. By that time, it was around 11:15 PM. I called him back, informing him that I would not be getting the book exactly at midnight, as it would be released for sale at 12:01 AM, and not a minute sooner, so, by the time I got it, it would probably be 12:30 AM or so, because of the long lines.

I got the sweetest surprise at that point! My husband said that I would be standing for quite a while, and offered to bring a folding chair from home. We don't live that far from the store, so this was not a problem. I was so happy about that! He did indeed bring the chair, and that helped a lot, as I'm not very good at standing for any prolonged period of time.

Finally, at midnight on the dot, it was announced that the books were going to be distributed! A HUGE cheer went up, all over the store! Then the countdown began! When the announcer finished, another HUGE cheer went up!! All of us Potterheads were ecstatic!!

The line started moving pretty fast after that. By that time, I had taken off the robe, as it was a little hot in the store. And I had to drag the chair with me, but heck, it was worth it!

I got another little unpleasant surprise when I finally got to the cash register..... Unbelievably, I was short of cash! My husband had given me $30.00, and I had spent $8.45 plus tax at the snack bar. I thought the book was going to cost $17.99 plus tax, but it was actually $23.99 (we got a 20% discount, which was nice of B&N). Plus, I also had the by-now-empty bottle of water....I started to panic, but a store employee stepped forward to help. I explained that my husband was in his car, out in the parking lot, and I could run out there to ask him for some more money, since I had left my debit card in my other purse. The employee was very nice, and said that this was fine. He added that he'd be waiting for me, right at the entrance, to escort me back to the register, so I wouldn't have to wait in line again. True to his word, he was waiting for me inside the store, at the entrance, when I hurried back. So I was FINALLY able to pay for my book, as well as the bottle of water. WOW!! Way to go, Barnes and Noble!!  GREAT customer service!!

Daniel (my husband) gave me another $10.00, with which I was FINALLY able to get my book into my eagerly waiting hands!! SQUEEEEE!!!!

And there you have it, folks, the full and unedited version of my magical, perilous, B&N adventures on the night before the release of this book!!!! Needless to say, I returned home a VERY happy camper, clutching my beloved book, along with my wand!!!

I can hardly wait for the next HP release to do it all over again!! Lol. And I know there will be future ones, too, because each of the original seven books is being released in new, beautiful, illustrated editions!!  YAY!!! "Wingardium leviosa!!!!!"

Book Blogger Hop No. 42: Contact With Authors

Welcome to the Book Blogger Hop,
hosted by Billy @

For more information, click HERE.

What to Do

1.) Post on your blog answering this week's
question:

Has your contact with authors usually
been in person, via e-mail, social
media, or something else?

(submitted by Elizabeth @ Silver's Reviews)

2.)  Enter the link to your post in the
Linky list on Billy's blog.

3.)  Visit other blogs on the list and
comment on their posts.

4.)  Be sure to find out next week's
question when you visit
Ramblings of a Coffee-Addicted Writer!

My Answer

I have met authors through all of the ways  mentioned above; the 'something else' has been through blog tours that I've hosted. Authors have dropped by to thank me for hosting them, and have also commented on how much they liked my post. Not all authors do this, unfortunately, but the real nice ones do.

I have interviewed quite a few authors as part of blog tours (check out my "Author Interviews" tab, beneath my header).   I have always tried to ask interesting questions, and have gotten very interesting answers from several authors.

Usually, I'll 'meet' an author that's new to me through a blog tour. If they don't comment on my tour post, though, there will probably be no further contact between us. If they do comment, then I will follow their blog and Twitter page, as well as like their Facebook page.

I rarely meet authors in person, but it has happened. For instance, in July, 2011, I met YA authors Maggie Stiefvater   and Meg Cabot at a book signing in South Florida. It was at a bookstore named "Books and Books". I bought Forever from Maggie, and Abandon from Meg, and had pictures taken with both of them!  You can access that post HERE.

At the 2013 Miami International Book Fair, I met YA authors  Kami Garcia, Alex Flinn, and Holly Black, got pics taken with all three, and also bought  signed copies of Beautiful Redemption and Towering.  You can access that post HERE.

Also, at the 2015 Miami Book Fair, I met  YA author Melissa de la Cruz, who had just released her new title, The Isle of the Lost. I bought the signed book from her. You can access that post HERE.

I hope to be able to continue meeting authors in any way possible, as I continue my adventures in Book Land!!
