On My Wishlist #16

This is a fun weekly event hosted by
Carolyn and Laura at  Book Chick City,
 and runs every Saturday.
Each participating blogger features books
s/he hasn't actually bought yet,
but desperately wants to read!!

These books can be either newly-published,
to be released in the near future,
or in print for several years.

If you'd like to know more, just click HERE.

In my particular case, any books I place
on my wish list are strictly the print versions,
since I do not read ebooks.

Here are my choices for this week!

Hardcover, 416 pages
Philomel
Expected Publication Date: January 3, 2012
Genre: YA Paranormal Romance

From the Goodreads Synopsis

Calla has always welcomed war. But now that the final battle is upon her, there’s more at stake than fighting. There’s saving Ren, even if it incurs Shay’s wrath. There’s keeping Ansel safe, even if he’s been branded a traitor. There’s proving herself as the pack’s alpha, facing unnamable horrors, and ridding the world of the Keepers’ magic once and for all. And then there’s deciding what to do when the war ends. If Calla makes it out alive, that is.

I'm currently reading Wolfsbane, the second book in this series,
which I'm enjoying just as much as
Nightshade,the first one.
So I will definitely want to go on to the third, and
any others she writes about Calla and her world!

Hardcover, 384 pages
HarperTeen
Expected Publication: March 6, 2012
Genre: YA Paranormal Romance

From the Goodreads Synopsis

Haunted by memories from his first days as a vampire, Balthazar has spent hundreds of years alone—without allies, without love. When he emerges from his isolation to help Skye Tierney, a human girl who once attended Evernight Academy, Balthazar has no idea how dangerous it will be. Skye’s psychic powers have caught the attention of Redgrave, the cruel master vampire responsible for murdering Balthazar and his family four centuries ago. Having learned of Skye’s powers and the remarkable effect her blood has on vampires, he plans to use her for his own evil purposes...

Since I already own the first four books of this series,
I have to get the fifth one,
in order to complete it.
And, of course, I have to start on the
very first one...

Trade Paperback, 384 pages
Gollancz
May 13, 2010
(first published April 28, 2008)
Genre: Paranormal Romance

From the Goodreads Synopsis

Half-vampire Cat Crawfield is now Special Agent Cat Crawfield, working for the government to rid the world of the rogue undead. She's still using everything Bones, her sexy and dangerous ex, taught her, but when Cat is targeted for assassination, the only man who can help her is the vampire she left behind.

Being around him awakens all her emotions. But a price on her head—wanted: dead or half-alive—means her survival depends on teaming up with Bones.

I've just bought the first book, Halfway To The Grave,
of this series I've heard so much about!
I read a few pages just the other day,
and heck, yeah, I want the entire series!

Also, I much prefer the UK covers,
with those glowing titles!

What fabulous books are you all
wishing for this week?

Hardcover, 384 pages
Del Rey
April 4, 2000
Genre: Science Fiction

From the Amazon Synopsis

The next in McCaffrey's popular Saga of the Talents series (Pegasus in Flight, To Ride Pegasus), this novel follows the adventures of a group of psychically gifted scientists who nobly improve Earth's future by making space exploration and colonization possible. Rhyssa also takes in prepubescent Amariyah, an orphaned girl who has a talent for plants and healing. When a group of psychically gifted people sneak onto the corruptly run Padrugoi Space Station during its inauguration, it is young Peter who saves the day by using his burgeoning psychic abilities to vanquish the comically evil Space Station Construction Manager Ludmilla Barchenka as she attempts a coup.

I have just discovered this series,
which is by one of my favorite authors!!
McCaffrey has been a major talent
in the Fantasy and Science Fiction genres for years.
Of course, I will have to feature the other books in it
in next week's "On My Wishlist" post!

Hardcover, 154 pages
Turner Pub
October 1, 1996
Genre: Fantasy

From the Goodreads Synopsis

On a hot summer day in Los Angeles, thirteen-year-old Josephine "Joey" Rivera - a misfit in junior high school but a born musician - meets a disquieting young man named Indigo who plays ghostly, haunting music on a horn the hue of a conch shell. The sound of his music stays with her, distant and beguiling, until she follows it down an ordinary street and across an unseen border into a magical world called Shei'rah. There, satyrs, water nymphs, and six-inch-long dragons live side by side with phoenixes and two-headed serpents and the Eldest - the unicorns whose music is the soul of Shei'rah.

I read Beagle's The Last Unicorn years ago,
and was totally enchanted with it!
I love unicorns, but I'll read
anything written by him, since he's another
of my favorite authors,
and another major F & SF talent!!

she has in this series!
I am so looking forward to reading this book

From the Goodreads Synopsis

St. Petersburg, Russia, 1888. As she attends a whirl of glittering balls, royal debutante Katerina Alexandrovna, Duchess of Oldenburg, tries to hide a dark secret: she can raise the dead. No one knows. Not her family. Not the girls at her finishing school. Not the tsar or anyone in her aristocratic circle. Katerina considers her talent a curse, not a gift. But when she uses her special skill to protect a member of the Imperial Family, she finds herself caught in a web of intrigue.

These are all so very interesting!
Two of them feature my favorite supernatural creatures:
vampires.
The other one is about 19th-century Russia,
which I absolutely love,
since I'm a big fan of Russian literature of that time.
(I adore Crime and Punishment, by Dostoevsky,
for instance!)

I can at least get the second book already,
since it's just been published!
So...on to Amazon!!

Mass Market Paperback, 336 pages
Berkley
Expected Release Date: January 3, 2012
Genre: Paranormal Romance

From the Goodreads Synopsis

In a glittering community in the Colorado Rockies called the Etherlin, the descendants of the ancient muses live behind a wall that separates them from the world and the dangerous creatures who crave them.

Alissa North is inspiration made flesh, so she should never have met Merrick, a deadly half-vampire enforcer, but when they do meet, the connection is instantaneous, and an illicit flirtation is born. He sends her secret gifts. She writes him secret letters.

As both worlds close in on them, Alissa knows that getting caught with Merrick could cost her everything she’s ever cared about, but giving him up proves harder than she ever imagined…

I find this to be a very intriguing combination:
muses and vampires!
Very imaginative, indeed.
Since I love both Greek mythology and vampires
(the good ones, of course!)
I will simply have to get this novel
pretty much....soon!!

Hardcover, 448 pages
Simon & Schuster/Gallery Press
September 6, 2011
Genre: Paranormal Romance

From the Goodreads Synopsis

On the midnight shift at a hospital in rural Maine, Dr. Luke Findley is expecting another quiet evening of frostbite and the occasional domestic dispute. But the minute Lanore McIlvrae—Lanny—walks into his ER, she changes his life forever. A mysterious woman with a past and plenty of dark secrets, Lanny is unlike anyone Luke has ever met. He is inexplicably drawn to her . . . despite the fact that she is a murder suspect with a police escort. And as she begins to tell her story, a story of enduring love and consummate betrayal that transcends time and mortality, Luke finds himself utterly captivated.

Part historical novel, part supernatural page-turner, The Taker is an unforgettable tale about the power of unrequited love not only to elevate and sustain, but also to blind and ultimately destroy, and how each of us is responsible for finding our own path to redemption.

This one has just the right ingredients --
a dark, mysterious past, immortality,
unrequited love with the promise of a true, requited one...
What's not to like?
It's now on my Amazon wish list!

Hardcover, 272 pages
Razorbill/Penguin
July 21, 2011
Genre: YA Paranormal Romance

From the Goodreads Synopsis

Lexi is cursed with a dark secret. Each day she goes to school like a normal teenager, and each night she must swim, or the pain will be unbearable. She is a siren - a deadly mermaid destined to lure men to their watery deaths. After a terrible tragedy, Lexi shut herself off from the world, vowing to protect the ones she loves. But she soon finds herself caught between a new boy at school who may have the power to melt her icy exterior, and a handsome water spirit who says he can break Lexi's curse if she gives up everything else. Lexi is faced with the hardest decision she's ever had to make: the life she's always longed for - or the love she can't live without?

I have already placed a couple of
mermaid novels on my wish list,
and here's another one!
Although the heroine is labeled a 'siren',
in fantasy they're pretty much the same thing.
I like the sound of this one,
even though there's a love triangle
in the picture...

What wonderful books are you all
wishing for this week?

Trade Paperback, 488 page
Published by Mira Books
April 28, 2009
Genre: Fantasy

From the Goodreads Synopsis

As a glassmaker and a magician-in-training, Opal Cowen understands trial by fire. Now it's time to test her mettle. Someone has sabotaged the Stormdancer clan's glass orbs, killing their most powerful magicians. The Stormdancers—particularly the mysterious and mercurial Kade—require Opal's unique talents to prevent it happening again. But when the mission goes awry, Opal must tap in to a new kind of magic as stunningly potent as it is frightening.  And the further she delves into the intrigue behind the glass and magic, the more distorted things appear. With lives hanging in the balance—including her own—Opal must control powers she hadn't known she possessed…powers that might lead to disaster beyond anything she's ever known.

Since I recently purchased Sea Glass,
the second installment in this series,
it's only logical (right, Spock?)
that I acquire the first one!
Besides, no excuse is necessary for
an inveterate book addict!!!

Hardcover, 508 pages
Published by Tor Books
October 2, 2001
Genre: Fantasy

From the Goodreads Synopsis

At the center of all the entwined lives in Newford stands a young artist named Jilly Coppercorn, with her tangled hair, her paint-splattered jeans, a smile perpetually on her lips--Jilly, whose paintings capture the hidden beings that dwell in the city's shadows. Now, at last, de Lint tells Jilly's own story...for behind the painter's fey charm lies a dark secret and a past she's labored to forget. And that past is coming to claim her now.

"I'm the onion girl," Jilly Coppercorn says. "Pull back the layers of my life, and you won't find anything at the core. Just a broken child. A hollow girl." She's very, very good at running. But life has just forced Jilly to stop.

Charles de Lint is one of my favorite
writers, in any genre!
Ever since I read his short-story collection,
which contains a series of tales about
the inhabitants of the fictional town of Newford,
I've been totally hooked!!
I would love to get every
single one of his Newford books!!

Trade Paperback, 432 pages
Published by Touchstone
May 5, 2009
(first published April 18, 2009)
Genre: Fantasy, Romance

From the Goodreads Synopsis

Ancient grudges, old wounds, and the quest for power rule in the newly widowed Queen Isolde's court. Hardly a generation after the downfall of Camelot, Isolde grieves for her slain husband, King Constantine, a man she secretly knows to have been murdered by the scheming Lord Marche -- the man who has just assumed his title as High King.

One of her few allies is Trystan, a prisoner with a lonely and troubled past.  Together they escape, and as their companionship turns from friendship to love, they must find a way to prove what they know to be true -- that Marche's deceptions threaten not only their lives but the sovereignty of the British kingdom.

This is an interesting variation on the story
of one of fantasy's great love stories!
It's based on "...the earliest written versions
of the Arthurian tales..."  (Goodreads)
As a lifelong fan of King Arthur,
as well as a romance fan, I just knew I had to add
this magical novel to my ever-growing wish list!!

Hardcover, 497 pages
Published by Little, Brown & Company
January 30, 1942
(first published 1940)
Genres: Mythology, Fantasy

From the Goodreads Synopsis

For over fifty years readers have chosen this book above all others to discover the thrilling, enchanting, and fascinating world of Western mythology. From Odysseus's adventure-filled journey to the Norse god Odin's effort to postpone the final day of doom, Edith Hamilton's classic collection not only retells these stories with brilliant clarity but shows us how the ancients saw their own place in the world and how their themes echo in our consciousness today. An essential part of every home library, MYTHOLOGY is the definitive volume for anyone who wants to know the key dramas, the primary characters, the triumphs, failures, fears, and hopes first narrated thousands of years ago -- and still spellbinding to this day.

I've heard so much about this book!!
I featured it during the Midnight Summer Festival,
which I participated in from
July 10th to July 20th.

Greek mythology in particular
has always enchanted me,
and I am so looking forward to reading
Hamilton's classic retellings!

Hardcover, 384 pages
Published by Katherine Tegen Books
Expected Release Date: February 14, 2012
Genres: YA Paranormal Romance, Urban Fantasy

From the Goodreads Synopsis

Balancing real life with the responsibility of being Heaven’s warrior is a challenge for Ellie. Her relationship with Will has become all business, though they both long for each other. And now that the secret of who she really is has come out, so have Hell’s strongest reapers. Grown bold and more vicious, the demonic threaten her in the light of day and stalk her in the night.

Treachery comes even from those whom she loves, and Ellie is broken by the deaths of those who stood beside her in this Heavenly war. Still, she must find a way to save the world, herself, and her love for Will. If she fails, there will be hell to pay.

The first book in this series
was a very exciting read that I simply
couldn't put down!
I love books in which the heroine
is gutsy, and doesn't need to be
rescued by a guy
in order to have a romantic relationship!

I'm really looking forward to the further adventures
of Ellie as she battles the reapers
aided by the very sexy Will!!

Hardcover, 352 pages
Published by Walker Books for Young Readers
May 10, 2011
(first published April 29, 2011)
Genres: YA Paranormal Romance, Urban Fantasy

From the Goodreads Synopsis

Tempest Maguire wants nothing more than to surf the killer waves near her California home; continue her steady relationship with her boyfriend, Mark; and take care of her brothers and surfer dad. But Tempest is half mermaid, and as her seventeenth birthday approaches, she will have to decide whether to remain on land or give herself to the ocean like her mother. The pull of the water becomes as insistent as her attraction to Kai, a gorgeous surfer whose uncanny abilities hint at an otherworldly identity as well. And when Tempest does finally give in to the water's temptation and enters a fantastical underwater world, she finds that a larger destiny awaits her-and that the entire ocean's future hangs in the balance.

Ever since I read Hans Christian Andersen's
"The Little Mermaid", I've loved
mermaid (and merman!) stories!
Besides, I've lived near the sea all my life,
although I'm not a sailor by any means.
No, instead, I prefer to sit by the shore and
daydream...
about fantastical sea creatures
who ride the rhythmically incoming waves...

Last but definitely not least,
these three books have beautiful covers!!

So, what wonderful books are you all wishing for this week?
