Teaser Tuesday No. 7: Libriomancer, by Jim C. Hines

Welcome to "Teaser Tuesday"!!

This meme is hosted by  Ambrosia @ The Purple Booker every week, and the rules are very simple.

RULES
* Grab you current read.
*Open to a random page.
*Share two "teaser" sentences from somewhere
on that page.
*BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS!
(Make sure that what you share doesn't
give too much away! You don't want
to ruin the book for others!)
*Share the title and author, too, so that other
TT participants can add the book to their
TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

Note
Since I'm a slow reader, I don't have a new book
started every week. I am therefore going
to bend the rules a little.....
I'll be featuring books I want to read,
that are currently sitting on my shelves.
I've also made the teasers a bit longer
than stated in the rules above.

Here are my teasers!
Libriomancy was in many ways a lazy man's magic. There were no wands, no fancy spells, no ancient incantations. No hand-waving or runes. Nothing but the words on the page, the collective belief of the readers, and the libriomancer's love of the story.   -- Chapter 1, page 7

I opened the book to a familiar scene. I knew these words by heart, but I read them anyway. Frodo had been stabbed by the Witch-king of Angmar. He was taken to the elves in Rivendell, where he was reunited with his uncle Bilbo. It was Bilbo who gifted his nephew with mithril armor and the magical sword named Sting.    -- Chapter 8, page 112

Isaac Vainio is a Libriomancer, a member of the secret organization founded five centuries ago by Johannes Gutenberg. Libriomancers are gifted with the ability to magically reach into books and draw forth objects. When Isaac is attacked by vampires that leaked from the pages of books into our world, he barely manages to escape. To his horror he discovers that vampires have been attacking other magic-users as well, and Gutenberg has been kidnapped.

With the help of a motorcycle-riding dryad who packs a pair of oak cudgels, Isaac finds himself hunting the unknown dark power that has been manipulating humans and vampires alike. And his search will uncover dangerous secrets about Libriomancy, Gutenberg, and the history of magic...

This book has been on my shelves for over three years now, and I can't believe I haven't read it yet..... The concept for this story is a totally fascinating one, and the cover, with its allusion to the Arthurian sword in the stone, is just the type of thing to grab any fantasy lover's heart! In fact, I featured this cover in one of my "Shelf Candy Saturday" posts, on October 5, 2013. If interested, you can access that post HERE.

  1. The Quotation sounds interesting and so does the book. Fictional stories comming to life is a fascinating concept. It reminds me a little of Robert Heinlein’s Number of the Beast. In that book, the protagonists were able to jump around different universes, some based upon science fiction books.

    1. Hi, Brian!

This is yet another of the practically ENDLESS number of books I've been wanting to read for YEARS, and just haven't gotten around to.... As you know, I am a practitioner of the fine Japanese art of "tsundoku". LOL.

Indeed, the concept of fictional worlds coming to life is a fascinating one! Several books have been written using this concept. It would be nice to be able to reverse it, too, I think. For instance, certain unsavory personalities in the real world could be relegated to the pages of books, and kept prisoner there.... BWHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

OMG.... I have never heard of that particular Heinlein book.... I SO need to get into reading more SF!! Well, I've just picked up one of James Blish's Star Trek TOS novels, if you take a look at my sidebar. I have quite a few novels, by different authors, based on the ST TOS universe. (As you know, I don't care much for other ST universes.)

Sorry for the late reply....and thanks for the interesting comment!! Hope you're having a GREAT Sunday!! <3 :)

  2. I do like the sound of this one - my daughter had an idea quite similar back when she was 9 years old... I keep meaning to expand on it.
