They killed my mother.
They took our magic.
They tried to bury us.

Now we rise.

Zélie Adebola remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. Burners ignited flames, Tiders beckoned waves, and Zélie’s Reaper mother summoned forth souls.

But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, maji were killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope.

Now Zélie has one chance to bring back magic and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must outwit and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.

Danger lurks in Orïsha, where snow leoponaires prowl and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest danger may be Zélie herself as she struggles to control her powers and her growing feelings for an enemy.

  20. So let's get the very obvious answer out the way, which is Harry Potter :) I'll forever be grateful for the times I've spent with these characters and in this world and how it brings so many people together, BUT next to that I'm absolutely grateful to every author who can truly evoke an emotion from me while reading; and this year I've had that a couple of times :) :
In the After by Demetria Lunetta has shown me how far humanity can go if pushed to survive in the most brutal circumstances.
Foolish Hearts by Emma Mills has given me so many giggles and heartwarming feelings and giddy moments.
Wait for It by Mariana Zapata has shown me that despite the dark moments, life has a way of working out - most of the times in a way you don't expect.
Girl Made of Stars by Ashley Herring Blake gave me goosebumps and I'm so grateful for this book that will teach hopefully anyone who needs it that you can stand by what and who you believe in.
Far from the Tree by Robin Benway made me appreciate my dad so incredibly much. The meaning of family comes through in that novel.

Truly some gems this year :)

  22. Margaret Atwood has become the queen of dystopian fiction and one of the most inspiring feminist writers of our day. The Handmaid's Tale is the embodiment of both these things. Not only does this novel make us extremely thankful for feminism and all that the movement has achieved - a magnificent feat in and of itself. It also makes us thankful for our human ability to see and feel things strongly, and be willing to strive for change when it's needed.

    1. Hi, Solange

Oh, I've been meaning to read Atwood for quite some time now! I have a copy of "The Handmaid's Tale" sitting on my shelves, and haven't gotten around to it yet....

I, too, am very thankful for feminism, although I must qualify that. I am a pro-life feminist; I don't believe that a woman needs to have an abortion in order to manifest her power.

Basically, I believe in the rights of ALL woman, including pre-born ones. So, although I do want to read Atwood's dystopian novel, I think it will be a mixed experience for me.

Thanks for the interesting comment, and for entering the giveaway!! <3 :)

  31. There are so many books I'm thankful for having read. I remember the first time I read Where the Red Fern Grows, when I was 7 years old. I can't read that book again, even though it is profoundly beautiful. I had already begun writing poetry and a few short stories. This book taught me that books can hold the pain of loss within their covers. I felt this pain acutely for weeks and cried whenever I thought about the characters. I can still remember the details of that book to this day, and feel the pain of those characters dying.

Yes, Sinclair is, from what I've heard of him, a great writer! I don't think I'd be able to read "The Jungle", though, at least not in the original, unexpurgated version. I can't read anything gory.

It's GREAT that this book was instrumental in the reformation of the meat packing industry and the creation of the USDA. It's sad, though, that it did nothing for workers' rights.....
