Dragon's Code:
Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders
of Pern
Gigi McCAffrey
Hardcover, 272 pages
Del Rey Books
October 2, 2018
Fantasy, Science Fiction
A new hero emerges
in a divided world as one of sci-fi's most beloved series--Anne
McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern--relaunches with this original
adventure from Anne's daughter, Gigi McCaffrey.
In honor of the fiftieth anniversary of the Dragonriders of Pern series, Gigi does her mother proud, adding to the family tradition of spinning unputdownable tales that recount the adventures of the brave inhabitants of a distant planet who battle the pitiless adversary known as Thread.
The last time Thread attacked Pern, the world was unprepared for the fight--until the Oldtimers appeared. These courageous dragonriders arrived from the past, traveling four hundred years to help their descendants survive. But the collision of past and present took its toll. While most of the displaced rescuers adapted to their new reality, others could not abide the jarring change and found themselves in soul-crushing exile, where unhappiness and resentment seethed.
Piemur, a journeyman harper, also feels displaced, cast adrift by the loss of his spectacular boyhood voice and uncertain of his future. But when the Masterharper of Pern sees promise in the young man and sends him undercover among the exiled Oldtimers, Piemur senses the looming catastrophe that threatens the balance of power between the Weyrs and Holds of Pern.
When the unthinkable happens, Piemur must rise to the challenge to avert disaster and restore honor to the dragons and dragonriders of Pern. Because now, in a world already beset by Thread, another, more insidious danger looms: For the first time in living memory, dragons may be on the verge of fighting dragons.

Why I can't wait for this one!
OMG.....Anne McCaffrey's daughter is continuing The Dragonriders of Pern series?! WOWZA!!! Okay, so NOW I DO have to get on the bandwagon and read the first book in McCaffrey Senior's famous series!! Yeah, this is getting to be some sort of habit with me....picking out books in a series I want to read, when I haven't even read the FIRST one.....lol. And this one is by the daughter of the original writer, too! How did THIS happen???? Well, I have the first book in my personal library. In fact, I've owned it for YEARS. I gotta stop for a minute here, and just.....BAWL. :(
Gigi McCaffrey collaborated with her late mother, Anne McCaffrey, on three short stories collected in the anthologies Great Writers & Kids Write Spooky Stories and Mothers and Daughters. She also contributed an essay to Dragonwriter: A Tribute to Anne McCaffrey and Pern, edited by her brother Todd McCaffrey. She lives in the Devil's Glen, in the garden county of Ireland, with her husband, their son, and the infamous hound, Sidney.

More Pern stuff, and by her daughter. This actually sounds pretty good. I like that cover too.
ReplyDeleteHi, Greg!
DeleteI REALLY have to start reading the original series!! And I'm SURE this continuation will be AWESOME, too!! What a beautiful tribute to her mother's legacy!! LOVE it!! :) :)
Thanks for commenting!! <3 :)
This is the first time I've actually read the blurb - and I have to say that it sounds tempting... Thing is, I've read the Anne McCaffrey books and absolutely loved them. I'd hate to pick this one up, find it disappointing such that it also tarnishes my fond memories of the original series. So I look forward to hearing what you think of this offering, Maria:))
ReplyDeleteHi, Sarah!
DeleteOh, man, I hadn't really thought of that.... I sure hope this doesn't turn out to be disappointing... The thing is, I haven't read any of the books of the original series. Lol. So here I am, featuring this book by a famous author's daughter who is actually continuing her mom's series! :) Well, I'm willing to give this a read and see how it goes. But I DO need to read at least the first book in the original series! Lol.
The only Anne McCaffrey book I've ever read was "The Ship Who Sang", which I enjoyed tremendously! That was several years ago, though, before I even had a book blog....
Thanks for the interesting comment!! HUGS!! <3 <3 <3 :) :) :)
Oh my god, this sounds amazing! I actually hadn't heard about these books but it's incredible that the daughter of the original writer is continuing it. Also, DRAGONS! :D
ReplyDeleteHi, Steph!
DeleteYeah, I think it's very sweet that she's continuing her mother's legacy! I'm hoping this book is just as good as the originals!
And, like you, I LOVE dragons!! :)
Thanks for commenting!! HUGS!!! <3 <3 <3 :) :) :)
I have a confession to make: I never got around to reading past the first book in this series, though my late friend Jan Howard Finder was written into one of the books... I did meet the author once, at a Worldcon in Melbourne. I had intended to bring The Ship Who Sang to be signed, but forgot, so bought something else off the table in the dealers’ room...
ReplyDeleteHi, Sue!
DeleteOh, I'm SURE I'll enjoy the original series, since I LOVE dragons!! :)
How interesting that your friend was written into one of the books!
I read "The Ship Who Sang" years ago, before I even had a book blog. That was a WONDERFUL book, and I should go back and reread it, so that I can review it. That's the only Anne McCaffrey book I've read so far, though.
How AWESOME that you actually met this author!! And you did the very same thing I would have done, had I forgotten to bring a specific book for her to sign! :) :)
Thanks for the interesting comment!! <3 :)
I think it's so cool that she is continuing on with her mother's story. How awesome of a legacy. Like you, I've not read any of this series but this seems like a perfect time to catch up. Thanks for sharing this and hey, I'll kick you an email soon!
ReplyDeleteHi, Barb!
DeleteYeah, it's DEFINITELY cool that she's doing that! What a tribute to her mom! (Of course, I do hope that she'll create her own series too, sometime in the future.)
I'm glad I'm not the only one who hasn't read the original series, either! Lol. And we DO need to catch up! :)
You're very welcome for the sharing! Thanks to you for commenting!! I'm looking forward to your email!! HUGS TO YOU AND THE BOYS, AND "WOOF, WOOF" TO THEM!!! <3 <3 <3 :) :) :)
Wow, it is so cool that Ann McCaffery’s daughter is continuing the series. I think that I read six previous books in the series but there a lot more. I remember the first two books, Dragonflight and Dragonquest as being particularly good. As I recall, those two can be read as a self contained story.
ReplyDeleteI cannot believe that the series is now fifty years old!
Hi, Brian!
DeleteYeah, I, too, thought this was VERY cool!! I hope she's done a good job. I'll find out pretty soon! However, I'd like to read at least the first book in the series before I delve into Gigi's book. But this is nevertheless a very sweet thing for her to do, in honor of her mother's legacy.
I can't believe the series is that old, either!! And I think I have those two first books, in an omnibus edition, somewhere in my personal library, here in the condo. Crossing my fingers that they're not in storage....lol. I'll have to take a look around here!
Thanks for the nice comment!! <3 :)
Such a gorgeous cover! Great pick!
