In a world of etiquette and polite masks, no one is who they seem to be.

Antonina Beaulieu is in the glittering city of Loisail for her first Grand Season, where she will attend balls and mingle among high society. Under the tutelage of the beautiful but cold Valérie Beaulieu, she hopes to find a suitable husband. However, the haphazard manifestations of Nina’s telekinetic powers make her the subject of malicious gossip.

Yet dazzling telekinetic performer and outsider Hector Auvray sees Nina’s powers as a gift, and he teaches her how to hone and control them. As they spend more and more time together, Nina falls in love and believes she’s found the great romance that she’s always dreamed of, but Hector’s courtship of Nina is deceptive.

The Beautiful Ones is a sweeping fantasy of manners set in a world inspired by the Belle Époque.

“Truly one of the most beautiful books I’ve read in a long time. This sweeping tale of love lost and found is told with old-world elegance, grace, and just the right touch of magic.”
—M. J. ROSE, New York Times bestselling author

Why I can't wait for this one!

Well, I have to say that I don't think I've ever come across a novel quite like this one before! The time period involved, which is usually dated from the end of the Franco-Prussian War in 1871 to the beginning of World War I in 1914, is one I'm not very familiar with. According to the Wikipedia article about it, there was a lot of optimism, economic prosperity, and scientific innovation. It was also a time in which the arts gave the world many masterpieces in literature, music, theater, and visual art. This sounds like just the sort of world I'd enjoy reading about, ESPECIALLY if there's romance involved!! And, last but definitely NOT least, the author is Hispanic!! For me, that's a HUGE bonus, as I'm Hispanic myself!!

Mexican by birth, Canadian by inclination. Silvia Moreno-García's debut novel, Signal to Noise, about music, magic and Mexico City, won a Copper Cylinder Award and was nominated for the British Fantasy, Locus, Aurora and Sunburst awards. Her second novel, Certain Dark Things, is a noir with Mexicans vampires. She co-edited the anthology She Walks in Shadows (winner of the World Fantasy Award) and is an editor at the magazine The Dark.

  3. Hey Maria- This book is set in an interesting time period. That seems unusual for a novel of this type. This was a time of optimism for many. Unfortunately World War I started what was to be 40 years of terrible times.

    Have a great week!

    1. Hey, Brian!

Yeah, it SURE is!! I've never heard of any other novel with a plot like this one, and in this time period.

I need to read more about this time period. All I do know is that this is when one of my favorite art movements, Art Nouveau, flourished. And yes, it was a time of optimism. How sad that WWI put an end to it....and then WWII came along. I sure hope we won't have any more world conflicts in THIS century!

Hope you have a great week, too!! Thanks for the nice comment!! <3 :)

  7. This one is already on my wishlist and I've been trying desperately to score an ARC (with no luck). I read "Certain Dark Things" in January and it's been one of my faves this year (and ever) and I vowed to read anything this author puts out.

Hey, another aside. Since you actually are considering reading "Dread Nation" after seeing it last week on my blog, I think we should buddy read it together in April when it comes out.

Oh, GREAT!! I'm so glad you like it, too!!

As for getting an ARC, maybe it's too early at this point in time. Keep trying!

This is the first time I've come across this book and author. Now I want to read "Certain Dark Things", too!!

Oh, that sounds like a GREAT idea!! Yeah, I can't believe I'm actually interested in reading a HORROR novel! LOL!! But this one has a kick-butt female hero, and I think the good guys win out in the end!! So yeah, I'll be more than happy to buddy=read it with you in April!! Looking forward to it!! YAAAAAA!!

Thanks for the lovely comment!! HUGS TO YOU AND THE BOYS!! WOOF, WOOF!! <3 <3 <3 :) :) :)
