Daniel José Older
Hardcover, 368 pages
Arthur A. Levine Books
September 12, 2017
Diverse Reads, Paranormal Fiction,
Science Fiction, Urban Fantasy,
Young Adult Fiction
The extraordinary sequel to the New York Times bestseller Shadowshaper is daring, dazzling, defiant.
Sierra and her friends love their new lives as shadowshapers, making art and creating change with the spirits of Brooklyn. Then Sierra receives a strange card depicting a beast called the Hound of Light -- an image from the enigmatic, influential Deck of Worlds. The shadowshapers know their next battle has arrived.
Thrust into an ancient struggle with enemies old and new, Sierra and Shadowhouse are determined to win. Revolution is brewing in the real world as well, as the shadowshapers lead the fight against systems that oppress their community. To protect her family and friends in every sphere, Sierra must take down the Hound and master the Deck of Worlds . . . or risk losing them all.

Why I can't wait for this one!
This sure sounds riveting!! I LOVE the mix of elements here -- art, fantasy, science fiction.....not to mention paranormal fiction! Plus, I definitely want to know what's up with the highly enigmatic Deck of Worlds..... and, of course, I can't wait to see our intrepid, strong female heroine deal with all the chaos unleashed! Last but not least, the word "revolution" certainly got me even MORE interested, as well as the following phrase: "....as the shadowshapers lead the fight against systems that oppress their community." You GO, girl!!!
This is the first, exciting novel in the series!!

Hey Maria,
ReplyDeleteBased on the plot description it sounds like this book mixes fantasy and social justice. That seems original.
It is interesting that as per the plot summery, a part of the book takes place in Brooklyn. It has become such a trendy place. My family is from there and I lived there awhile (at a time when it was not trendy!)
Have a great week!
Hey, Brian!
DeleteThat's one of the reasons I am really intrigued by this book! I like this combination, too, and feel it's very appropriate for the current political climate.
My husband grew up in Canarsie, which is an area of Brooklyn.
How interesting that your family is from Brooklyn! From what I've heard, there are a lot of Italians in that part of the city.
I've only been in NYC very briefly (I was there for about two weeks, as a child, so I don't remember much), and don't know the city at all. I haven't been back since then, either, bot would love to have a vacation there!
It's great that Brooklyn is now a trendy place!
I am certainly looking forward to reading both of these novels!
Thanks for the nice comment!! <3 :)
I haven't read the first book, but this does look good! It's not really my type of read, but I hope you LOVE it when you get to read it!
ReplyDeleteI do love the covers of both books, though :) And maybe it's just me, but the woman on the front looks a bit like Naomi Harris?! Just noticed that :)
Have a wonderful Wednesday, Maria! <3 :) :) <3 HUGS!!
Here's my WoW
Amy @ A Magical World Of Words
Hi, Amy!
DeleteYesh, it sure DOES look good, doesn't it? Since I LOVE novels with kick-butt female protagonists, I KNOW I will love this one! And, of course, I also urban fantasy and SF!
Oh, those covers!! I wish I had such luxuriously abundant hair! (Although I do have a lot of hair, it's not quite as obvious as it is on the cover model, lol.)
OMG!! I just looked at some pics of Naomi Harris, and there is a definite resemblance! AMAZING!! I had not realized it until you pointed it out.
Thanks for the wonderful comment!! Hope the rest of your week is going GREAT!! <3 <3 <3 :) :) :)
When I saw this cover, I immediately knew what series it was from...and then remembered I've not started it. I have an adult UF book by this same author I'd like to start. I'm super curious about the worlds Older creates and need to make time for these in my life.
ReplyDeleteBooker T took over the blog today - payback for the cat feature last week. No horror so you'll have a safe venture at The Farm.
Hi, barb!
DeleteOh, those covers are SURE GREAT!! I love all the hair, lol! Plus, the young woman certainly looks like a very strong character, which is something I LOVE to encounter in these types of novels!
I'd like to know the title of that adult UF book you own. When I visit your post, I'll be sure to ask!
So Booker T took over the blog today? Yeah, I had a feeling he wouldn't like that cat feature.....lol. How does his buddy feel about that? Lol.
Thanks for letting me know that there's no horror at The Farm this week!! Lol.
Thanks for the nice comment, Barb!! <3 <3 <3 :) :) :)
The first one is called "Half Resurrection Blues" and I think the series is Bone Street Rumba.
DeleteThanks for coming back and giving me that title, Barb! I totally forgot to ask when I visited your blog,... HUGS FOR YOU & THE BOYS!!! WOOF, WOOF!! <3 <3 <3 :) :) :)
DeleteI haven't read the first in the series, but it sounds like something I'd like.

Thanks for the comment!! <3 :)
I love a good urban fantasy :) Plus the covers are gorgeous! Will be adding this one to my TBR. Thanks for sharing!

Hi, Sam!
DeleteOh, these covers are just GORGEOUS!! Glad you like them, too!!
I want both of these books, of course! I have yet to read the first one, lol. I often find out about a series from coming across the second or third book on the Internet. So now I have to catch up! Lol.
