My Answer

Ha, ha! GOOD one, Billy!! Okay, so, "Who you gonna call?" (Cue the music!)

Seriously now.....this is indeed a rather uncomfortable problem for all of us wimpy, chicken sh** bookworms!! Fortunately, we who ADORE books have VERY resourceful brains, since we've met so many resourceful characters during our reading lives! (Plus, we have rampant imaginations!)

Here are my recommendations, based on personal (cough, cough) experience:

First of all, it's very important to find out if the ghosts haunting this library are friendly or not. If they're into ghostly drama, such as rattling invisible chains and moaning uncontrollably, then of course there won't be any reasoning with them. In that extreme case, I have two possible solutions: 1.) Call Ghostbusters right away (I do believe Bill Murray is still in the business, from what I've  heard), or 2.) Call a ghost psychologist. Say what?! Yes, you read this right! Call a ghost psychologist. They are otherwise known as "psychics", and there are some that specialize in drama-loving ghosts. They can definitely help here, as they can talk to the ghosts and persuade them to not haunt you while you search for that precious book.

On the other hand, if the ghosts happen to be friendly, then there's no problem at all. Just go right into the library and, when these friendly, otherworldly entities appear, just ask them how Casper's doing lately. Exchange some pleasantries, ask them how ghostly things are going for them, and then let them know what your business is. After that, you should have no problem at all! Just say, "Ciao!", or "Later!", and then go about your business.

If neither of the above situations applies, and these ghosts have a reputation for relentless otherworldly nastiness to earthbound humans, then you have no choice but to prepare a powerful spell that will enable you to enter the library undisturbed. I have to warn you, though, that this doesn't ALWAYS work.

Here's the recipe for the spell: 1 twisted piece of raspberry licorice, 2 shots of tequila, 1 wine-drenched coconut soufflé , a few chicken gizzards, 10 cloves of garlic, 4 (count them)  jalapeño peppers, 3 shots of Jamaican rum, 3 teaspoons of honey-dipped mandrake roots, 10 shots of vodka, 1 twist of orange peel, and 1 liberal shake of chili peppers. Blend all this together (you will need to wear a surgical mask, as the smells will be quite overpowering) while chanting, "Ghosties dear, pull up here, taste my brew, drink it through, then go party, have a blast, while I sneak in and get my book, wishing you the most delicious ghostly repast!"

Pour this hot, smoking concoction into a pumpkin-shaped plastic cup, and take it with you to the library. Stealthily approach the hoary building at the stroke of midnight, softly walk up the crumbling steps, and knock on the library door. It will definitely creak open, showing some cobwebs on the top lintel. Then, leaning down, just leave the concoction on the floor, right inside the door, and RUN LIKE HELL.

Be sure you at least go all the way across the street, and wait behind the old oak tree you wil find there. As soon as the moon peeps out from a heavy cloud bank (this always happens in bona fide horror movies), take a peek at the library. If you see a rosy glow coming from inside, it means the ghosts have drunk your concoction, and have started to party. (If you did a GREAT job with this brew, they will absolutely get more of their ghost friends to join them. You might even be asked to make more!) It's safe to go in and get your book. You can even say "hello" to the ghost bouncer at the door. If, however, you see black smoke issuing from the library's interior (remember I warned you that this spell doesn't always work), then your best bet is to.....RUN LIKE HELL.

If you are unsuccessful in acquiring your book from this library, then by all means search for it online, as there are quite a few sites dealing in rare, antiquarian books. Some of them are even staffed by.....you guessed it -- ghosts. These, however, are of the tame, humanized variety, and are absolutely NO trouble at all!

Sure hope all of the above helped!!  BWHAHAHHHA!!!!!

  1. Another great post Maria.

I guess that great minds think alike as I thought of calling The Ghostbusters when I read the title of your post :)

I actually think that this could be the premise of a good story. It could be something along the lines of searching through an ancient, abandoned and haunted library for a magical book.

    1. Hey, Brian!

I'm glad you liked it! Thanks for the good word!

I don't know why I approached this topic the way I did, lol. I guess, since I happened to be reading two books with ghost characters, I was kinda "tuned into" fiction writing.

Yes, great minds DO think alike! How funny that you, too, thought of "Ghostbusters"!! Lol. That's one movie I really enjoyed! It was SO freaking funny! Maybe I'll watch it again this Halloween season. Sure beats watching a gory horror movie!

You're right -- this could be the beginning of a good story. I like your suggestion! Who knows, maybe I'll go ahead and develop it further.

(Of course, in REAL life, I'd NEVER enter a haunted library, no matter how much i wanted a book! Lol.)

Thanks for the GREAT comment!! TGIF!! :)
