Here is this week's question:

Name a book you hated.

Thankfully, there haven't been that many books I've read lately that I actually hated. Saying that you hate a book is certainly a pretty strong statement. I feel sorry for authors who have written books that elicit such an unpleasant emotion in their readers.

Although there are a few books I could name, they're not in the Young Adult Fiction genre. Since this is a YA blog, I'll stick with YA books. I do remember two  -- in the same series -- that I read in 2011, and which I totally disliked.

The author is Jennifer Murgia, and the books are Angel Star and Lemniscate

The first book contained too many similarities to the first book of The Twilight Saga. I happen to love the Twilight books, and didn't like seeing plot elements from them being copied by another author.

Another reason I hated Angel Star was that the plot and characters were not well crafted. There were far too many inconsistencies in both.

As for the second book, plot and character inconsistencies continued. The influences from The Twilight Saga did, as well. Also, there was a blurring of good and evil that I totally, totally hated! I've heard the idea that good and evil need to be 'balanced'. This is completely wacko! Good and evil are total opposites. Not only can they not coexist, but good must conquer evil. And I really disliked this author putting forth such an idea, especially in a novel aimed at teens.

If you'd like to read my reviews of each of these books, just click on the book covers below.

  6. I also do not read a lot of things that I really do not like. Reading time is so short that I try to be careful about what I read.

I tend to really dislike art that is completely derivative of other works so I understand why you would have a problem with Jennifer Murgia's works.

A couple of books that come to mind for me were The Dune books written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson after Frank herbert died. I read a couple of them. I found little value in them.

And I hate when authors too closely copy an established franchise.

  9. Hi, Alexandra!

You know, publishers should not accept books that have similarities with already published works. Of course, self-published authors can easily get around this, unfortunately. If I remember correctly, both of these books are sel-published.

This type of thing REALLY turns me off!! In this case, the writing style is great, so it's really sad that she didn't hesitate to rip off another author. So now you know to stay away from these books.

  12. Hey, Brian!

Yes, derivative books are VERY disappointing. Their authors obviously lack the creativity to develop their own original ideas. It seems that many YA books have been ridiculously influenced by The Twilight Saga!

I have not read "Dune", but have seen online criticism of the novels written by Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson. It's sad when this type of thing happens, as they were continuing with Frank Herbert's world. This is not the same thing as writing a book with new characters who behave just like those in a book by another writer, one that has been greatly praised. However, it does happen that, when someone writes new installments in a series begun by another writer, the quality is just not the same....

I could have mentioned "Moriarty", by Anthony Horowitz, in this post. It was written in the Sherlock Holmes universe, but neither Holmes nor Watson, his sidekick, appear in the book. I HATED this novel with a passion!! I didn't mention it in this post, though, because it's not a YA novel, and, as you know, this blog is now dedicated to the YA genre. I will sneak in an adult book from time to time, though. Lol.

So I do agree with you that when other authors continue with the literary work of the original creator, the results can be VERY disappointing!

Thanks so much for the thought-provoking comment!! : )

  13. Hi, Erin!

Yes, as I was telling Brian, it's VERY disappointing when authors copy an established book or book series.

Well, you haven't missed anything -- for sure! Lol.

You're very welcome for my visit! So happy yours is the featured blog this week!!

Thanks for the compliment on my header!! As you can see, I don't like the typical horror aspects of Halloween. I thought this really adorable, so I bought it for my blog. I use it every year, during the entire month of October.
