Never Upon A Time: A Fairy Tale

You’ve always hated her, but you might not know the whole story. . .

Edith may not be brazen and enchanted like her twin sister, Ember, but in a world of dying magic, perhaps her simple desires are enough.

After a Selection Banquet gone awry, Edith is left without a suitor or a plan. Befriending a little white fox and occupying herself with a philanthropic project outside castle walls, Edith soon rebuilds morale and musters enough courage to reach out to her estranged twin sister.

But Ember’s been harboring an evil secret - and thwarted love and jealousy can turn acts of merit into classic tales of wickedness in this new twist on an old tale.

“Away with you! Or I will scream as if I’m being murdered.” Gretchen’s voice grew shrill.
The fact that the word “murder” was in a small child’s vocabulary scared Edith more than the threat itself. “I will go, I will go,” she said hurriedly. Edith decided to leave her cape and make a run for the Wood. Secrecy was more important than the shawl and gifts, so she decided to make a getaway and hoped abandoning the cape would perhaps serve as a reason to return. Whether or not she wanted to brave such a return was still up for debate.
“Father and Mother will be walking up the same pathway you took to come here. To avoid them, you must go a different way or stay parallel and concealed in the forest beside it. Unless you want to bump into them?” Her tone was sarcastic. “I’m sure after yet another futile day of hunting and foraging for squirrels, they’d love to see you.”
Edith didn’t acknowledge Gretchen. Instead, she ran headlong toward the forest’s edge for fear of what might happen if Ember discovered that her most hated rival was at her cottage. When she reached the edge of Elfin Wood, a curious pull behind Edith’s ribcage had her look over her shoulder for one last glance at the dilapidated cottage. She saw her nephews standing at the window. Rune was waving profusely, hands full of the cookies Edith had made. Dash, whose eyes could be seen peeking happily from under the hood of his aunt’s cape, blew kisses with razzleberry tart-stained hands. Edith clutched her chest and stepped into the tangled brush of the Wood.

worth losing your life?

Edna Allen’s Monday goes from mundane to murderous when she opens the front door to find the love of her life standing there. A man she thought had died years ago… after being accused of murder. John Collins is back, bringing with him a charming smile, a dog named Havoc, a second chance at love…and a threat of death. Danger surrounds this former bad-boy, and even after a lifetime apart, he still ignites a spark in Edna. A spark she thought she’d buried decades earlier. As Edna relives their summer romance, where more than the weather was hot and steamy, she falls in love all over again and evokes memories filled with drama, passion, action, and murder. Now these soul-mates must face the truth about what happened in the past and find the killer hunting them in the present. And Edna, with her sarcastic wit, a pocket stun-gun, and a few hare-brained schemes, is ready to fight for the man who still makes her pulse race. But does she dare risk her heart again to now protect the man whom she couldn’t save back then?

A Word From The Author

Thanks so much for hosting me on your blog today! I am excited to introduce you to the Page Turners Book Club.

I write romantic comedy, and my series is set in the small town of Pleasant Valley, Colorado. It’s centered around a wonderful group of women in a book club. The women range from their teen years to their eighties and each book features a different woman and her story.

Every book has romance, friendship and mystery because in Pleasant Valley, dating can be deadly. These women are easy to fall in love with as they search for romance and clues while eating really great desserts!

Just Another Maniac Monday -- Book 3 in the Page Turners series, released this month. It’s Edna’s story and this character is a funny, sassy eighty-year-old who considers herself an expert on murder due to her extensive knowledge of CSI and crime-show television episodes. She gets the surprise of her life when her Monday morning game shows are interrupted by the arrival of John Collins, the love of her life…a man she thought had died years ago after being accused of murder.

John Collins is back, bringing with him a charming smile, a dog named "Havoc", a second chance at love…and a threat of death. Danger surrounds this former bad boy, and even after a lifetime apart, he still ignites a spark in Edna. A spark she thought she’d buried decades earlier.

This book flashes back to the sultry summer of 1955 as Edna tells the love story of her and Johnny, and more than the weather gets hot and steamy. But the past has a way of catching up to you and a deadly threat has followed John to Edna’s door. Edna, with her sarcastic wit, a pocket stun-gun, and a few hare-brained schemes, is ready to fight for the man who still makes her pulse race.

Falling in love all over again, Edna must choose to risk it all to save the man she loves. But is finding your long-lost love worth losing your life?

You can find Just Another Maniac Monday and all of the Page Turners books on Amazon.

I am so excited to share Edna’s story with you!

"Writing Edgy Inspirational Fiction"

I’m often asked what Edgy Inspirational Fiction is. I have come to realize that my own view on the subject differs a bit from others. About ten years ago, I had run out of Christian fiction that appealed to me. I desired something more real – raw you could say – with Christians having struggles in today’s world of seduction. I wasn’t finding what I wanted, so I turned to reading secular fiction, and in doing that I have found some amazing authors who I adore and follow today!

I thought I was alone in my thinking until this new term made its way into our literary world – edgy inspirational fiction. I thought, “Yay! Finally there is material that will tell it like it is!” Christians struggle just like the next person does, why not share it? Certainly, there are CBA guidelines to Christian fiction, with good purpose. I do not mean adding cursing, graphic sex, or morbid violence, etc. to take away from the foundation the CBA has set up, but I think the content in itself should evoke a high state of emotions which we can all relate to.

I am disheartened when I read online or hear from my colleagues that edgy inspirational fiction is just an excuse to be graphic, that it’s an excuse to add inappropriate material for Christian fiction. Because that’s not the case with me. In Broken Identity, I write about a Christian woman tormented with the temptation of infidelity. Although it’s fiction, I can still imagine that it doesn’t matter whether you’re Christian or not, in having that issue come up sometime in your life. How can readers be invested in a character if what they are going through is sugar coated? Perhaps I am just a black sheep out there, and want to read deeper works; after all, I’m one who does not need a happy ending in movies.  I want reality, but without the compromise.

Another work of mine is a western series. Book #1 is about a woman who has a heart for soiled doves – that was tricky in the sense of being accurate, yet trying not to offend readers at the same time. Talk about a challenge when the book is full of prostitutes in the Old West!
With Broken Identity, when I got to writing in the husband’s POV, I had a hard time. Obviously, I had no idea what he was going through, I had to get creative and got the idea to listen to Adele’s music throughout writing his POV – and those forlorn broken-hearted love songs she sings so beautifully, set the perfect tone

Thank you for the opportunity to share about the desires of my heart! Please don’t let me be a lone black sheep out there in this; give edgy inspirational fiction a try and let me know what you think. Happy reading!
