The fact that these are Regency Romance novellas drew me in right away, as this is my favorite type of Christmas romance! However, I know from previous experience that the stories collected in anthologies are not always of the same quality. So I did hesitate, at first. But then, the beautiful cover finally won me over, and I plunged in.

Well, as anthologies go, this one was actually really good! The three stories -- and especially the first one, "Christmas Eve Proposal" -- were imbued with the warmth and tenderness of the season. The characters in all three were also very well drawn, and each author was equally skilled at bringing the time period to life.

Kelly's characters and plot depict a poignant situation: the female protagonist,  having been rejected by her wealthy, cruel father, has been brought up by an aunt who dearly loves her. When she meets the handsome sailor who is tutoring the spoiled son of a ruthlessly demanding aristocrat, she falls in love at first sight. He does, as well.

What is different about this story, and also what made me love it, is that it's about ordinary working people, not the members of the landed gentry, or the aristocracy. Ben Muir, sailing master, and Mandy Mathison, a server at an inn located at the port where  Muir's ship docks, are good, decent people who live their lives peacefully, and find themselves dealing with the injustice of the wealthy. They end up triumphing in the end, however, just in time for Christmas!

The second story, "The Viscount's Christmas Kiss", was about the power of forgiveness and second chances. It tells the tale of how one of the romantic protagonists has wronged the other, and seeks to be forgiven. Lily Rutherford has never forgotten how Gregor St. James, a Viscount, snubbed her years ago, at a dance, and the resulting consequences: her rejection by the ton. (For those not familiar with this term, it refers to the fashionable high society of the British Regency period.)

This Christmas season, she must do her best to endure the Viscount's presence at her family's estate. Understandably, she has no desire to be anywhere near him. Interestingly, however, she does find herself feeling attracted to him......and he to her.

What makes this story even more interesting is how the author delves into the minds and emotions of these two characters. The Viscount acted the way he did out of cowardice, and is sincerely remorseful. The reader gets to see the inner circumstances that led to his hurting Lily, and just how wounded she felt. She makes him all too aware of how deeply his actions hurt her, too.

The joy and warmth of Lily's boisterous family, along with the Christmas spirit, serve to allow these two to work together to patch up their old quarrel, and move into a future of love and happiness. How the author takes them there makes for some very sweet, tender reading.

An added bonus that made me like this story even more is that Lily was an artist, and there are some comical scenes involving one of the family dogs and Lily's paintbrush....

Sparks fly in the third and last story, "Wallflower, Widow.....Wife!" The male protagonist, Adam Royston, is a rather bored, aristocratic landlord who is tying up loose ends at one of his properties before leaving for Christmas revels at the family estate. His plans change when he meets a very charming young widow, Cassandra Norton, whose love for her two stepdaughters is touching and beautiful. I liked this character immensely, and that was due mostly to her devotion to, and care for, these little girls who weren't even her own daughters.

This story had some passion in it, which was not present in the other two. I loved it!! How the two protagonists met and fell in love was just beautiful and wonderful and just.....PERFECT for the Christmas season! There was snow all around, and a hunt for the right Christmas tree, as well as love and tenderness. And then there were the two girls, who were great characters in their own right. As devoted to their stepmother as she is to them, they warmed up to Adam right away, and knew, as children usually do, that the two adults were falling for each other.

In short, this collection hits all the right holiday notes, being heartwarming enough to please any Christmas romance fan! It's light, enjoyable holiday reading, on the one hand, while on the other, it presents and deals with some very serious themes totally fitting for this, the most wonderful time of the year!

These stories are to be enjoyed by the warmth of a good fire, with a cup of hot chocolate in one hand, while it snows softly outside, and the lights glint on the Christmas tree..... Or, in a more southern setting, they can be enjoyed in an air-conditioned living room, with a tall glass of sweet lemonade, while the heat beats down outside! Whichever scenario fits your situation, you will be transported to Regency England, and make merry in great, Regency period style! Kudos to all three of these writers!

MY RATING:

Award-winning author Carla Kelly is a veteran of the New York and international publishing world. Carla is best known for her Regency Romances, those novels of manner and wit, made popular more than two centuries ago by Jane Austen. Carla has made certain types of Regencies her own, particularly novels and stories about people who are not lords and ladies. Many of them are hard-working and hard-fighting members of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines in the Channel Fleet, and the British Army on the Spanish Peninsula.

Carla’s interested in the Regency Era is mainly fueled by her scholarly interest in the Napoleonic Wars on land and sea. She credits her own upbringing with some of this interest. As the daughter of an officer in the U.S. Navy, she crossed the 180th Meridian as a child, and has the certificates to prove that she is a member in good standing of The Domain of the Golden Dragon, since the age of 13 months.

Award-winning author Georgie Lee was born and raised in San Diego, where she also attended college, majoring in television and film production. She began her professional writing career at a local cable TV station writing marketing videos, promotional spots and public service announcements, some of which still haunt the airwaves.

A lifelong history buff, award winning author Georgie Lee hasn’t given up hope that she will one day inherit a title and a manor house. Until then, she fulfills her dreams of lords, ladies and a season in London through her stories. When not writing, she can be found reading non-fiction history or watching any movie with a costume and an accent.

An army brat born in England and now living in Canada, Ann grew up loving history, but majored in business, with history on the side. She has a husband and two lovely daughters and a Maltese Terrier called "Teaser", who likes to sit on a chair beside the computer while she works.

Her love of the past and the stories in her imagination led her to write her first novel in 2000, a never-see-the-light-of-day-effort, and after having her first book published in 2006, she knew she'd found her niche.

She loves the Georgian era, and within that, the period known as the long Regency. She also adores happy endings.

A Tradition of Making Music
Emily Mims

Music is an important part of everyone’s Christmas, whether it’s Christmas carols at the church Christmas program, watching a rerun of "White Christmas", or the incessant Muzak playing at the malls.

As a singer and musician, Christmas music is an especially important part of my Christmas. I have been making music for the holidays since I was a teenager playing the organ in a little Baptist church, and music continues to be an important part of my Christmas celebration every year.

I’ve made Christmas music everywhere I’ve been invited. In that small church; at the school where I taught for many years; in the televised choir of a large suburban congregation; in the back of a truck on a Christmas caroling hayride; on a barge floating down the San Antonio River with the Boy Scouts; for church senior groups; and in the dining rooms and halls of nursing homes.

My opportunities to make Christmas music grew exponentially when I learned to play the dulcimer and ukulele and joined The San Antonio Riverpickers, a mountain music band that features dulcimers and old-time Appalachian tunes. Also, I’m a member of Ukulele Ladies and Gents, which plays all kinds of music, including lots of island songs. With these two groups, I have expanded my holiday repertoire beyond the usual Christmas carols and radio and movie songs. Also, I’ve found myself playing in venues that are an adventure in and of themselves.

Riverpickers does a lot of street festivals around the holidays, most notably "Christmas in Comfort" and "Dickens on Main", in Boerne. We mix in a few Christmas numbers, but play mostly mountain tunes, as few carols sound all that good on a dulcimer. Our audience seems to enjoy the old mountain tunes as much as they do the carols.

Playing for a street festival can get interesting in terms of weather. We’ve played on a stage facing a setting sun (yes blinding), and under chilly cloud cover with rain threatening. We’ve played in the heat; this is Texas after all, and it can still be hot in December. We’ve played in the cold. Really cold. Our record cold-weather performance was an hour-long set in Boerne a few years back. The sun had gone down, it was twenty-nine degrees and the wind was blowing. It was so cold the instruments all had to be retuned, not a problem unless you play a hammered dulcimer with forty-plus strings. (My fingers burned for a solid hour afterward.) Afterward, we promised ourselves we’d never play below forty degrees, but honestly, I don’t think it would stop us. Street festivals are too much fun to pass up.

The ukulele group is the complete opposite. We stay inside where it’s nice and warm (or cool depending on the temps), and play Hawaiian Christmas music, complete with hula dancers and red and green Aloha shirts. And, we sing in Hawaiian. Of course, we do the traditional Christmas songs too. The ukulele group plays at many different places, including churches and libraries, and a lot of nursing homes. Although we play somewhere every month, the holidays tend to be our busy season. So far, we have one performance scheduled right before Thanksgiving and four during December. So far.

Making all the performances can get hectic in an already jam-packed holiday season. Occasionally my husband and I must skip a party or another event to play and sing, but making music, especially Christmas music, deeply enriches our holidays.

P.S. The guitar strap in the photo lights up. How fun is that?

Book Blogger Hop No. 113: Reading Christmas Romance Novels

Welcome to the Book Blogger Hop,

This Week's Question

If you celebrate Christmas, do you
feel the need to stop reading
anything but Christmas-themed
romances as the holiday
season starts?

(Submitted  by Maria @

My Answer

Oh, ABSOLUTELY!! Christmas is my favorite holiday, and I LOVE everything about the season! I usually have my decorations up on Black Friday. I am, in fact, a Christmas addict! If you visit my blog during late November and all of December every year, you'll see just how true this is, lol. I actually feel depressed once the season is over.....

Christmas is the season of love and giving, so of course romance would be related to it! Therefore, at this time of year, I do indeed feel the need to drop all other genres, and only read Christmas romance novels. Although "A Christmas Carol" is my favorite Christmas-themed read, I also especially enjoy reading Regency romance novels during this time of the year. These are novels set in the period of British history in which Jane Austen wrote her own novels, so these modern novels are, of course, influenced to some extent by Austen's work. I have found this historical period fascinating since I first read Pride and Prejudice when I was in high school.

In the Regency novel genre, the absolute QUEEN, in my honest opinion, is Mary Balogh. I have never come away from a Balogh novel feeling either bored or unsatisfied. And I mean NEVER. This writer truly excels at creating memorable characters, and her plots are delightful! She incorporates humor into her novels, too, much the same way Austen did.

Balogh has some really wonderful Christmas romances, whether novels or shorter fiction. Whichever one I read, I KNOW I will definitely get some very warm fuzzies!

In recent years, I have started reading contemporary Christmas romance novels, as well. The first author that comes to mind here is Melody Carlson. In 2013, I read her omnibus collection, The Treasure of Christmas, which includes 3 novellas: The Christmas Bus, The Gift of Christmas Present, and Angels In The Snow. These were all WONDERFUL!

Another of my favorite contemporary romance authors who writes GREAT Christmas romance is Sarah Morgan! Last year, I read Miracle On 5th Avenue, and this year, Sleigh Bells in the Snow. I really enjoyed them both, and want to read more of her books, including those that have nothing to do with Christmas!

Then there's Scarlett Bailey's Just For Christmas. Not only do I LOVE this book's cover, but the story inside is set in Cornwall (England), and is chock-full of the perfect Christmas spirit!

I've even read some paranormal Christmas romances, mostly those featuring vampires. Of course, these vamps are not  Dracula clones. Oh, no! These are ROMANTIC vamps. They don't go around killing people. They either visit blood banks, or drink synthetic blood. I'm thinking here of the novels of Kerrelyn Sparks and Lynsay Sands. Both of these authors actually inject humor into their novels. If this seems odd, you just have to pick up one of their books and see for yourself!

I have read All I Want for Christmas is a Vampire, by Sparks, and want to read The Bite Before Christmas, by Sands. (I have read a few of her non-Christmas romances, and laughed a LOT at the antics of her famous Argeneau clan.) The Sparks book was VERY funny indeed, and I'm sure the Sands one will be, too!

As you can see, reading Christmas romance novels is one of my treasured holiday traditions, right along with all of the typical ones!

Here's a list of some of my favorites. I have reviewed several of these. Just click on each book cover for either my review or the Goodreads page.

She'll risk everything for her own Christmas miracle...

Determined to conquer a lifetime of shyness, Harriet Knight challenges herself to do one thing a day in December that scares her, including celebrating Christmas without her family. But when dog walker Harriet meets her newest client, exuberant Spaniel Madi, she adds an extra challenge to her list--dealing with Madi's temporary dog sitter, gruff doctor Ethan Black, and their very unexpected chemistry.

Ethan thought he was used to chaos, until he met Madi--how can one tiny dog cause such mayhem? To Ethan, the solution is simple--he will pay Harriet to share his New York apartment and provide twenty-four-hour care. But there's nothing simple about how Harriet makes him feel.

Ethan's kisses make Harriet shine brighter than the stars over moonlit Manhattan. But when his dog-sitting duties are over and Harriet returns to her own home, will she dare to take the biggest challenge of all--letting Ethan know he has her heart for life, not just for Christmas?

Why I can't wait for this one!

Here's another Christmas-themed romance!! YAAAAY!!!  And it, too, is set in NYC!! For some reason, I LOVE the idea of Christmas in that city! I guess this must be a holdover from watching "Miracle On 34th Street" (both new and older versions) every Christmas! Lol.  But it's also the fact that I read another Sarah Morgan book last holiday season -- Miracle On 5th Avenue -- which I just ADORED.
Moonlight Over Manhattan (gee, the initials in the title spell out "MOM"! Lol.) also has a bonus for my pooch-loving blogging buddies (you know who you are!)....yes, there are dogs involved in the story! I like that, too! So I want to read this one before the Big Day arrives!!
