This week's haul!!

Books Purchased

I've just interviewed the author of
this novel, which is set in
spooky New Orleans, a city known for
strange and unusual happenings,
including, of course, hauntings!
Since it's a romance as well as a suspense
novel with supernatural
overtones, I just had to get it....and
it's perfect for the season!!

I finally received my collectible
copy of this great SF classic!!
It's a 2001 reprint of the original edition,
which I featured in one of my
recent "Shelf Candy Saturday" posts.
I can't believe it's really mine!!!

I discovered this one in a small,
recently opened Books & Books store
right across the street from my day job!!
It's a collection of essays
about the science fiction genre,
from the author of the classic
I was also immediately attracted
by the very surreal,  gorgeous cover!

Lynsay Sands is one of my favorite
paranormal romance authors!
Her vampire novels are so funny!
If you think it's weird to mix vamps and
humor, give her novels a try!
Like Kerrelyn Sparks, another favorite
of mine, Sands loves to
present humorous tales of
vampire romance!
Happy Halloween for sure!

This is another novel in Sands'
acclaimed Argenau series!
As in the one above, the vamp
hero is lucky to have found a human
female who loves him and will
join him in eternal matrimony!!

This novel is, I think, the last one in
The House of Comarre series.
I've only read the first one,
and will get to the rest of them!!
Each of these books has a
stunning cover (I featured one of them
in my SCS feature some time back).
The characters and plots are
very intense!!

I own a few Sherrelyn Kenyon novels,
but have to confess that
I haven't read any of them....
From what I've heard, she's a terrific author,
so I have to try and
start one of these books, whatever
the series might be.
This one combines mythology
with lots of action and
a powerful female protagonist.
And of course I love that cover,
with the gorgeous sword!!

What do you think of my haul?
What fascinating book(s)
did you add
to your shelves this week?

    1. Hi, Grace!

Thanks for the compliment on the Halloween header! I purchased the image at a stock photo website, and created the header with Picasa. I use it during the month of October every year. I LOVE this image!

Also thanks for the compliment on my haul! I want to read the entire House of Comarre series, since now I have all the books.

I'll be dropping by to see your own usual AWESOME haul!! : )

    1. Hi, Jillyn!

All the covers of The House of Comarre series are simply STUNNING. Now the publisher seems to be in the process of changing them. Why, I don't know. Hey, as the saying goes, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Oh, well. I'm SO glad I bought them all before this "improvement"!

As for this edition of "The Martian Chronicles", just click on the Amazon link underneath the book's cover. The prices are very reasonable!
Thanks for complimenting my header! Yes, I agree it IS cute, which is why I picked it. I didn't want anything scary or gruesome!

Happy reading to you, too!! Thanks for coming by and commenting!! : )

  3. Some great acquisitions there Maria.

I had heard a lot about that collection of Atwood essays and recently heard an interview with her on NPR. I have read both the Handmaid's Tale as well as Surfacing. Though I recommend both I think Surfacing is a work of brilliance. It turns out that Atwood is a big science fiction fan, hence these essays. I really want to read them too.

    1. Hey, Brian!

Glad you like my haul! Yeah, when I saw the Atwood book, I just HAD to get it! I've heard that "The Handmaid's Tale" is superb, although I haven't read it. Of course, I want to! I haven't heard of "Surfacing", so I'll investigate further. I know she's written quite a lot of books.

And did you see my copy of "The Martian Chronicles"? I'm SOOOO happy about finally getting that!! It's covered n Mylar, too!

Thanks for the great comment!! : )

    2. That edition of the Martian Chronicles is such a great find!

I think that ultimately Surfacing is a stronger and more important work then is the Handmaid’s Tale. I think that Atwood has the chance of being an author who is remembered hundreds of years into the future. In terms of prose, plots, characters and themes I believe her to be a great artist. There is a Universality to her writing. People in different times from different cultures would get a lot of important stuff from her.

I loved The Handmaid’s Tale as I love Surfacing. Both are filled with great writing, charters and themes. The Handmaid’s even packs more of an emotional punch. There is nothing wrong with The Handmaid’s Tale. However, it is deeply rooted in American Partisan Politics. I happen to agree with Atwood’s Politics as expressed in the Handmaid’s Tale. However, I do think that tying many of the themes contained in the book to what is likely to be a temporary political situation saps some of the Universality out of the work. In fact, having been written in the 1980s, the political trends that Atwood was warning about are already becoming outdated. I think that Surfacing is story less rooted in its time.

There may be more Atwood worth reading, I know that folks usually talk about these two as her best works. I also read some of her short stories which were good but I did not like them as much as I liked these two novels.
