Again I have to use the word "stunning" to describe a cover! This one is especially so, too!
Those wings......they're SO gorgeous, yet, so menacing.....And there are the bird's legs, which are dramatically tensed, as if ready to grab prey. Both the title and the image suggest that something is very dreadfully wrong in this novel. The image is visceral, and visually bold. I know all of this means that this novel probably has some very scary, creepy events in it, but I still find the cover to be incredibly compelling!
The font is perfect for this cover, and adds to the oppressive, menacing mood. I love the way it's been colored, too, to suggest a scary event has happened. The font also reinforces the idea of a volcanic eruption, which is my interpretation of the expanding black smoke in the background. The idea of fallen angels also comes to mind, although the image is that of a crow. In short, this is an incredibly fascinating, visually riveting, cover!
The amazingly brilliant cover artist is Naomi Chen, a freelance illustrator living in NYC, who graduated from the School of Visual Arts in 2011, with a BFA in Computer Art. She is the co-founder and Art Director of Icosahedra Inc., a computer software company specializing in game development for PC, console, mobile, and VR. She is also the 3D and Unity Tech Art Lead for the company, which opened its doors in 2015.
Chen has created illustrations for several clients. Among them are Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Passion Pictures, and Psyop. Icosahedra is currently working on developing The Robot Seven, a game for console and PC.

This is a compelling cover you're right. The crow throws me though -- How would a crow fit into everything? Inquring minds want to know lol
ReplyDeleteHi, Verushka!
DeleteIt sure is! And I'm just as puzzled as you are about the crow. Like you, I want to know hos this bird fits in!
Thanks for visiting and commenting!! :)
This is a great cover.
ReplyDeleteYou hit it on the head when you said that this gives the impression that something is very wrong. Logically a the ashes and smoke do look to be a volcanic eruption or other cataclysmic event.
It is a cover like this that makes me want to read a novel. Reading its synopsis makes me think that ominous things looming from afar may be component to the plot.
Hey, Brian!
DeleteOh, most definitely!! It caught my eye right away!
Something is definitely VERY wrong! So this cover is totally appropriate for this novel, as it's classified as "dystopian fiction", among other things.
I totally agree with you about this cover making you want to read this book! And, of course, the synopsis is really fascinating, as well. But it's always the cover that a reader sees first. If that's not attractive (even when it also looks sinister), the reader won't feel motivated to investigate further.
In this case, I'd say that the cover artist has certainly helped sell this novel!
Thanks so much for another great comment!! Hope you're having a WONDERFUL Saturday!! :)
