London is in chaos.
Rue and the crew of The Spotted Custard returned from India with revelations that shook the foundations of the scientific community. There is mass political upheaval, the vampires are tetchy, and something is seriously wrong with the local werewolf pack. To top it all off, Rue’s best friend Primrose keeps getting engaged to the most inappropriate military types.
Rue has got personal problems as well. Her vampire father is angry, her werewolf father is crazy, and her obstreperous mother is both. Worst of all, Rue’s beginning to suspect what they all really are… is frightened.
When the Custard is ordered to Egypt, transporting some highly unusual passengers, Rue’s problems go from personal to impossible. Can she get Percy to stop sulking? Will she find the true cause of Primrose’s lovesickness? And what is Quesnel hiding in the boiler room?

Why I'm waiting on this one!
I'm currently reading Prudence, the
first volume in this series, and
enjoying it immensely!!
This book is such a wonderfully creative,
simply spiffing combination of
genres! Everything comes together just
perfectly, too!
The back cover of the book compares
Carriger to Jane Austen and
P.G. Wodehouse.
I totally agree, as her witty dialogues
and tongue-in-cheek humor
are SO quintessentially British!
This author is fast becoming
one of my favorites, and
so is this series!!

Though I have not read it and it looks very creative and amusing, the Jane Austen comparison might be a little overboard :)
ReplyDeleteI am curious to read what you have to say about the first book.
Hey, Brian!
DeleteThis book is DEFINITELY very creative and amusing, as you say! I see that you were surprised at the comparison with Austen, but I really do think it's warranted, at least to some extent. The one difference is that Austen wrote about the Regency period -- an era in British history that was much earlier in the 19th century. Garriger's novels are set in the Victorian period.
I hope to be finished with the first book fairly soon. I'm also reading another one, which I'm supposed to review -- "The Last of the Firedrakes", so I might not able to review this one as soon as I'd like.
Here's the link to the Amazon page for "Prudence". You can sample the book in the Amazon reader, and see what you think.

Let me know your opinion. This book really does have something 'Austenish' about it, IMHO.
Thanks for commenting!! : )
Thanks for the link. The writing style is definitely Austen like. I think that this may be intentional. I really like the style. I think that these books may be a lot of fun.
DeleteOoh, I like steampunk and really want to read more books in that genre. This seems like a great series and I like that the author's writing is witty, and even compared to Austen. That has me sold. Great pick :)
ReplyDeleteHappy Wednesday!
Shane @ Itching for Books
Hi, Shane!
DeleteThis is my very first Steampunk novel, and I'm very glad to be reading a book in this genre at last! Yes, this is indeed a great series, and the writing very witty! I fully agree with the Austen comparison. Glad you liked my pick!!
Happy Wednesday to you, too! Thanks for commenting!! : )
I have no idea why I haven't read a Gail Carriger book yet. I know that I own the first two in the Parasol Protectorate series, but just never got to them. I only hear good things. There are so many books I want to get to, and Waiting on Wednesday certainly doesn't help the TBR get any shorter.
ReplyDeleteHi, Barb!
DeleteThis is my very first Carriger book, and I'm very happy to be reading it at last, since I've been wanting to for such a long time.... Now I know what Iv'e been missing! And now I want to read every one of her books!
Since you already own two of her books, I recommend getting to them as soon as you can. She's a terrific writer!!
I know....."Waiting On Wednesday" sure doesn't help our TBR piles get any smaller..... we always want more and more books! Lol.
Thanks for fhr comment!! : )
Steampunk - I love it!
