"If you control our sleep, then you can own our dreams... And from there, it's easy to control our entire lives."

Set on a planet that has fully definitive, never-changing zones of day and night, with ensuing extreme climates of endless, frigid darkness and blinding, relentless light, humankind has somehow continued apace -- though the perils outside the built cities are rife with danger as much as the streets below.

But in a world where time means only what the ruling government proclaims, and the levels of light available are artificially imposed to great consequence, lost souls and disappeared bodies are shadow-bound and savage, and as common as grains of sand. And one such pariah, sacrificed to the night, but borne up by time and a mysterious bond with an enigmatic beast, will rise to take on the entire planet--before it can crumble beneath the weight of human existence.

Why I can't wait for this one!

I've heard about this type of planet somewhere; I think it's from a classic SF novel, possibly by SF Grand Master Isaac Asimov. But I'm not entirely sure. In spite of this, I'm interested in what this author does with this plot element. Besides, even great authors like Shakespeare borrowed themes and plots from previous writers. I think this will be a totally FASCINATING read!!
Then there's that cover!! LOVE. IT.
Another plus: Anders is being compared to no less a writer than Ursula K. LeGuin!! THAT clinches it!!

  1. That is an intriguing premise! And I think Charlie Jane Anders' first book was supposed to be pretty good- I haven't gotten to it yet- and this looks it has a ton of promise as well. Great pick- and happy new year!!

    1. Hi, Greg!

It SURE is!! And I've seen "All the Birds in the Sky" on GR. Yes, it's supposed to be pretty good!

One of my New Year's resolutions for 2019 is to read more SF. I plan to include this book, plus "All the Birds in the Sky"! Crossing my fingers.....

Glad you liked my pick!! Happy New Year to you, too!! <3 :)

  2. This is sn interesting concept. I am not sure what science fiction writers might have explored it in the past. This is actually a fairly common situation in astronomy. I believe it is called a synchronous rotation.

Either way it is a fascinating concept for fiction and this book sounds fascinating. I agree that it is OK to borrow themes like this as long as a story is otherwise original.,

    1. Hi, Brian!

I know I've encountered this phenomenon somewhee before, but I really don't remember where. I thought at first it was in Asimov's story, "Nightfall", but I checked this on Goodreads, and that wasn't it. Oh, well....

How interesting that this is actually a common situation in astronomy! Fascinating, too!! (As Mr. Spock would say, lol.) I'm going to check it out!

Yes, it SURE looks like this author has made great use of this astronomical anomaly! And I'm glad you agree that it's okay to borrow from other writers, as long as you do something original with the stuff borrowed! Hec, if the The Bard himself did it, then so can other writers!

Thanks for the fascinating comment!! Hope you had a GREAT New Year!! <3 :)

Sorry for the late reply..... :(
