Love.
Magic.
Revolution.

When smallpox kills her parents, seventeen-year-old Camille Durbonne must find a way to provide for her frail sister while managing her volatile brother. Relying on petty magic--la magie ordinaire--Camille painstakingly transforms scraps of metal into money to buy the food and medicine they need. But when the coins won't hold their shape and her brother disappears with the family's savings, Camille must pursue a richer, more dangerous mark: the glittering court of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette.

With the dark magic she learned from her mother, Camille transforms herself into 'the Baroness de la Fontaine' and is swept up into life at the Palace of Versailles, where aristocrats both fear and hunger for la magie. Her resentment of the rich at odds with the allure of glamour and excess, Camille is astonished to find that her would-be suitor Lazare, a handsome young inventor whom she thought shared her dreams of liberty, is also living a double life.

As the Baroness de la Fontaine, Camille gambles at cards and flirts, desperate to maintain her place at court and keep herself and her sister off the streets. But la magie has its costs. When a scheming courtier blackmails her and Lazare's affections shift, Camille loses control of her secrets. Then revolution erupts, and she must choose--love or loyalty, democracy or aristocracy, reality or la magie--before Paris burns.

Bestselling author of Caraval Stephanie Garber calls Enchantée "a lit firework crackling with treacherous magic, decadent romance, and disguises that take on lives of their own--deliciously addictive!" Gita Trelease's lush, imaginative debut fantasy is perfect for anyone looking for immersive magic in the world of Sofia Copola's Marie Antoinette.

Why I can't wait for this one!

OH.MY.GOSH. This sounds so FREAKING GOOD!!!!
I haven't read any good historical fiction in quite a LOOONG time and the combination with  fantasy in this novel has me TOTALLY excited!!!
And the setting and time period? LOVE both!! I mean, the court of Marie Antoinette, the French Revolution?! Just.....WOW.
Plus, that cover REALLY rocks!!  It has such an air of mystery and intrigue....and magic, too, of course!
This also brings back nostalgic memories of
studying French in high school, and dreaming of Paris.....

What do you think of my
choice this week?

let me know!

  1. This sounds like it might be very good. It sounds reminiscent of some other stories where the protagonist is drawn into using magic or other powers in questionable ways until bad results ensue. The fact that this is set during The French Revolution makes it sound all the more interesting.

    1. Hi, Brian!

      Oh, DEFINITELY!! :) :)

I find the combination of genres here totally FASCINATING!! And yes, the theme of magic being used in questionable ways is also interesting.

I remember reading "The Scarlet Pimpernel" years ago, which made me interested in The French Revolution. Dickens's "A Tale of Two Cities" had the same effect. Sadly, I haven't continued to read about this period in history....

I hope to be able to fit this book in sometime next year. Crossing my fingers!! Lol.

Thanks for the nice comment!! <3 :)

  2. The setting sounds great, and the combination of maybe a little grittiness and magic... I can see why you're looking forward to this one! It does definitely sound fun.

  4. An interesting cover indeed. It finds a clever way to do the usual half-face of historical novels. The French Revolution - definitely a dangerous time to be around. Hope you enjo6 it - let us know what you think when you finish it,

    1. Hi, Sue!

I agree that this is an interesting cover, with its unique take on the half-face feature you mention. It caught my eye right away!!

The French Revolution is not only a fascinating period in history, but also a frightening one. I remember reading two classic novels set during this period -- "A Tale of Two Cities" and "The Scarlet Pimpernel".

I hope to be able to get to this book in the coming year!!

Thanks for the interesting comment!! <3 :)
