From New York Times bestselling author Rachel Vincent comes a richly imagined, provocative new series set in the dark mythology of the Menagerie…

When Delilah Marlow visits a famous traveling carnival, Metzger's Menagerie, she is an ordinary woman in a not-quite-ordinary world. But under the macabre circus black-top, she discovers a fierce, sharp-clawed creature lurking just beneath her human veneer. Captured and put on exhibition, Delilah in her black swan burlesque costume is stripped of her worldly possessions, including her own name, as she's forced to "perform" in town after town.

But there is breathtaking beauty behind the seamy and grotesque reality of the carnival. Gallagher, her handler, is as kind as he is cryptic and strong. The other "attractions"—mermaids, minotaurs, gryphons and kelpies—are strange, yes, but they share a bond forged by the brutal realities of captivity. And as Delilah struggles for her freedom, and for her fellow menagerie, she'll discover a strength and a purpose she never knew existed.

Renowned author Rachel Vincent weaves an intoxicating blend of carnival magic and startling humanity in this intricately woven and powerful tale.

But when Finn, the ghost from her dreams, appears in the flesh; her nightmares become reality and her dark visions begin coming true. Inexplicably drawn to him, she can’t deny the dangerous hold he has on her heart. The deadly secrets he harbors will ultimately test her courage and push the boundaries of her love.

They told 20-year-old Charlie O’Malley that they had a cure for the rare blood condition that would eventually kill her -– an untested, experimental cure. All they wanted in return was for her to join their elite military team and train to kill the Undead.

She took the deal, not because she cared so much about extending her life, but because it would make her strong -– stronger than ordinary humans. Strong enough to kill the vampire who’d pretended to love her, taken her blood, used her body, and murdered her mother.

Killion was the last of his kind, or so he thought. When he found Charlie, he felt the pull. She had the rare Belladonna Antigen all vampires had as humans. Vampires were compelled to protect those rare mortals they called The Chosen. But with Charlie, the bond was different, more powerful than anything he’s felt before, and impossible to resist, even though surrendering to it will probably get him killed.

Ancient vampire elders Rhiannon and Roland come out of exile, risking their lives to help their mortal friend Roxy reclaim her granddaughter. But before the tale ends, their lives will be forever changed.

Join Maggie Shayne as she returns to her most beloved series of all time with this new beginning….

  9. These books look really good.

Menagerie is making me think about how stories about carnivals have played such an interesting part in modern mythology. We imagine them as such dark and mystical things. We also seem to tie them with stories of escape involving people running away and joining them.

My personal favorite carnival story is Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes.

  10. Hey, Brian!

You know, somehow carnivals have acquired quite a sinister reputation, especially in popular literature. I know of a couple of books in which carnivals are fun on the surface, but underneath, are full of horrible events and creatures.

One book I read, titled "The Forbidden Game", featured carnival grounds. The characters went there at night, so the rides weren't working, nor were there any other people there. This book is an omnibus -- a collection of three books in a series -- written by L.J. Smith, who's also the author of "The Vampire Diaries". Amazingly, this collection is actually in the horror genre, and i read it! I, who utterly despise the horror genre!! But Smith's writing was so compelling, the plot so original and fascinating, that I just HAD to keep reading..... And well, the tale does have a happy ending.....except for one character in particular.....

In spite of the fact that Bradbury is one of my favorite authors, I think his novels and short story collections do have an undercurrent of horror that makes me feel VERY uneasy. In "The Illustrated Man", for instance, there's a story about a family that purchases "wall TV" -- something found in "Fahrenheit 451", as well -- that turns out to be too close to reality for comfort....and the children of the family are not as sweet and childlike as they seem.....SHIVERS!!

Having said the above, of course I've never even gone near "Something Wicked This Way Comes:, not to mention "The October Country".

Isn't it interesting that I LOVE vampire romances, in spite of my dislike of the horror genre? Could it be that I like "horror lite"? Lol. Well, as long as the vamps are like Edward Cullen in The Twilight Saga, I have no problem with them. Dracula clones are quite another matter! Lol.

Thanks for the great, thought-provoking comment!! : )
