No one ever accused Penelope Jackson of being normal, nor did they suspect the dark secret she kept. A dangerous web of deceit and secrecy unravels when news of a stranger’s death puts Penn on a collision course with the very person she’s been hiding from her whole life. Her fragile world is shaken to its core with the sudden arrival of Vacavious and she soon discovers the bizarre and magical world surrounding her seemingly ordinary life.
No one is who they claim to be, including those closest to Penn. A mysterious security detail emerges from the shadows, scrambling to protect her as powerful forces await the fall of her protective veil on her eighteenth birthday.
Penn prepares to fight against unseen evils before it’s too late. The world of Nighmerianotte and its population depends on her survival, for she is the Sanguine.

Note
This short review is of the excerpt below, NOT the entire book. I only do this type of thing if I REALLY like a book, and that's the case here!

This excerpt certainly has me very intrigued! I've been trying to figure out just what issue these mysterious council members are dealing with, and am still pretty much in the dark. From what I can gather, the immortal child being referred to here is very important to their people. She is called 'The Sanguine', and belongs to an undetermined bloodline, but, of course, I have no idea what this all means, except that it sounds like Penn, the main character, must be more powerful than she has ever realized in her entire life!
I love how the author sets the scene. It's rather spooky, with all the pounding rain, the candlelight, the roaring fireplace, and the fact that this meeting is probably highly secret. There's also a high sense of anticipation about the mysterious Sanguine...
In short, I need to get this book and read it just as soon as I possibly can!! Maybe I'll win a copy!!

Lothario's eyes narrow as he pauses to stare at the next birth credence. The rain pounds against the oval-shaped, stained-glass windows of the observatory. Thunder ricochets within the castle walls as several as several massive torches hanging from the stones illuminate Abram and Lothario, causing their shadows to dance upon the stone floor.

"The rain has not ceased in days," Abram says in an agitated voice. He puts his oil pen down and rubs his eyes as he waits for Lothario to read the next birth credence. When he doesn't, Abram turns, annoyed, to see Lothario staring intently at a piece of parchment. "Lothario?" he urges his colleague. "What is it?"

"Bloodline undetermined," Lothario whispers as he looks to Abram. "Could this be it? How is this possible?" Excitement gathers in his voice.

Abram seizes the parchment from his colleague and holds it to the candlelight. He places his reading glasses on his nose and reads, "Immortal child, 005 - 006. Oh...." His breath catches as he scans the rest of the report. "Born on the thirty-first of October, 1994, to an unknown Salvatore de Luca, mortal, and Annalisa San Angelo, witch. Assigned sentry: JoAnne Gemello. Bloodline...." he gasps, "undetermined." His voice lowers to a whisper as he looks to his colleague with pure exhilaration, like a child witnessing magic for the first time. "Call Giuseppe. We must assemble the other members immediately..... Finally, our Sanguine has come."

The five members of the Demi gather at one end of the long, rectangular table in the dining hall of Relyett Castle. Rain relentlessly strikes the tall, inset windows, intoning a menacing tune. A colossal fireplace, composing most of the wall at one end of the dining hall, illuminates the surrounding stones with a soft touch of orange. Some statues of distinguished species sit above its giant mantle: vampire, witch, sentinel, and warlock. Unmoving and sinister they watch, tracking all with their eyes.

"We seem to have a hard time protecting our Five in Nighmerianotte. Now a black blood? This is a first. We have never tried this. It seems to me, this is our only alternative." Abram strokes his beard with the palm of his hand. His bushy eyebrows animate his every expression as his frizzy, long, brown, unkempt hair lies messily around his shoulders. His short stature exudes his humble confidence.

Giuseppe removes his reading glasses and says, "It is law. We cannot remove an immortal child from the sentry if the biological mother signs the credence. The parents know what is best for the child."

"Highest. With all due respect, I think this is an extremely poor choice. It is simply a matter of time before he finds her. What if history repea---"

Giuseppe ignores Olly's pleas. "Nyah, the protective spell, is it ready?"

"Yes, Highest." Nyah nods.

Olly tries to hold his tongue but speaks anyway. "Highest?"

"I know what she is, Olly," Giuseppe says.

"I apologize for my insolence, Highest, but?" Olly pleads in one final attempt to convince the leader of Nighmerianotte.

Giuseppe's eyes narrow as they slowly look toward Olly. "Abram. Retrieve the sentry and bring her to us. Olly, let us prepare to take possession of the Five in the customary manner. She will be here soon." His eyes leave a sulking Olly and move to Lothario. "Lothario, contact Church and let him know we will meet the Detail at portal number two with the child. Being a black blood, she should have no issue getting through the portal to the mortal world." He glances back to the credence and announces, "It is time." Giuseppe's brow furrows as the takes the birth credence in his long, narrow fingers.

Chimes echo through the castle, indicating the presence of someone at the door. "They are here." A loud ricochet of thunder rattles the chandeliers above as the Demi members glance up in surprise. The rain and thunder relentlessly beat a merciless tune, haunting and sad.

Giuseppe turns and walks to the roaring fire behind them. "This," he whispers to his peers and confidants, "shall remain a secret until she comes of age."

He tosses the birth credence into the fire and watches it burn. "The Black-Blood Sanguine. The Five."
