Book Synopsis
“Utterly captivating. A heroine unlike any I’d met before, a setting I’d never glimpsed, a story I’d never imagined. Atlantia is fresh, wild, and engrossing. I love Ally Condie.” —Shannon Hale, award-winning, bestselling author of Austenland and Dangerous

Can you hear Atlantia breathing?

For as long as she can remember, Rio has dreamed of the sand and sky Above—of life beyond her underwater city of Atlantia. But in a single moment, all Rio’s hopes for the future are shattered when her twin sister, Bay, makes an unexpected choice, stranding Rio Below. Alone, ripped away from the last person who knew Rio’s true self—and the powerful siren voice she has long silenced—she has nothing left to lose.

Guided by a dangerous and unlikely mentor, Rio formulates a plan that leads to increasingly treacherous questions about her mother’s death, her own destiny, and the corrupted system constructed to govern the Divide between land and sea. Her life and her city depend on Rio to listen to the voices of the past and to speak long-hidden truths.

  1. This looks really cool. I haven't read Condie's Matched series because the premise didn't appeal to me at all, but Atlantia is a lot more interesting!

Glad you like my pick! I'm not too enthused about reading the Matched series, as I mentioned to Julia above. But I REALLY want to read this book, and I'll bet there will be a series, too!

  3. This sounds really good.

Mermaids seem to be very popular these days. I understand why as their mythology is so very interesting and old.

I just saw a performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream which contains is a reference to a mermaid that struck my as incredibly beautiful -

Once I sat upon a promontory,
And heard a mermaid, on a dolphin's back,
Uttering such dulcet and harmonious breath,
    That the rude sea grew civil at her song;
And certain stars shot madly from their spheres,
    To hear the sea-maid’s music.

    1. Hey, Brian!

Oh, I know! And you're right -- mermaids ARE very popular these days. Their mythology is indeed very interesting, as well as old. I find them entirely fascinating!

Of course, I also LOVE this gorgeous cover!!

OMG, you saw a performance of "A Midsummer Night's Dream"? Was it a stage performance? If so, you are SO lucky!! I think this is my FAVORITE Shakespeare play. I even based my blog's name on it. I wanted to call my blog "A Midsummer Night's Dream of Books", but I thought that would be much too long for a title. So I simply deleted the word "midsummer". And really, what better thing to dream about at night, if not books? ESPECIALLY printed books!! Lol.

That is a LOVELY passage from this play! Well, everything the Bard wrote was absolutely lovely! But this particular passage just takes my breath away, it's so BEAUTIFUL.

You know, that's one of the reasons I love the color blue so much -- it reminds me of the sea! Of course, it reminds me of the sky, as well. And it's SO peaceful to sit by the shore and just look out to sea, to where the horizon line separates the two areas of blue.....

I must confess, however, that the ocean depths totally scare me. So I'd never be interested in any sort of diving. Maybe I envy mermaids because of their ability to navigate the ocean currents, and the very deep ocean areas, so easily, even if these creatures are totally imaginary! (Hmmm...I wonder about that.....)

Thanks for visiting and leaving such a WONDERFUL comment!!

    2. It was a Community Theater Production. But for unpaid actors they were very good!

This was indeed a great work to base your blog name on. There is something so very special about that play.

I agree, It really would be wonderful indeed to be able to really breath underwater!

By the way, You have really convinced me just how wonderful the color blue is!

    3. Hi, again, Brian!

Gee, I'd give just about ANYTHING to be able to see this play live.....I repeat, you are SO, SO lucky!!

I just remembered.....there's another Shakespeare play I love -- "The Tempest". Of course, I also love "Romeo and Juliet" and "Hamlet", but these are very tragic plays..... "A Midsummer Night's Dream" is so light and magical..... "The Tempest" is magical, too.

You're right -- there's something VERY special about "A Midsummer Night's Dream", which is why I based my blog name on it. A dream is something ephemeral, surreal, most of the time, and therefore, magical. And books are all of these things! Well, except ephemeral, of course. Books will last FOREVER!!!! YAY!!

I'd love to be able to breathe underwater. But I'm also afraid of the ocean currents, and the pressure. The deeper you go, the more pressure you encounter. It's very dangerous. Mermaids are blessedly free from this danger, and they can breathe underwater.

Oh, so I've convinced you of "just how wonderful the color blue is"? Lol. Indeed!! It's the most BEAUTIFUL of all colors!! There's a very special feeling I get when I see a blue object, especially if it's an electric sort of blue, like the tones of blue I have on my blog. Oh, I get such visual pleasure from these tones!! You have no idea! Lol.

Thanks for coming back with such a great comment!!!! : )
