Book Blogger Hop No. 129: Picking ONE Favorite Book?

Welcome to the Book Blogger Hop,
hosted by Billy @

This Week's Question

Could you ever pick a favorite
book, or is it like choosing
your favorite child?

(Submitted  by Elizabeth @

My Answer

I could NEVER in a million years choose ONE book as my all-time favorite, although Jane Eyre does come pretty close! Well, this novel is my favorite CLASSIC, but I do enjoy reading other types of fiction. Therefore, I would have to say that yes, choosing just one favorite book would be much like choosing my favorite child, if I had ever had kids, which, sadly, I never did.....

I am totally excluding nonfiction here. I have several favorites there, as well!

As anyone who has ever visited this blog and read my posts and reviews knows, I'm a VERY eclectic reader. I do stick to genre fiction (otherwise known as popular fiction) on this blog, though, reserving literary fiction and nonfiction for my other blog, MindSpirit Book Journeys, which has been sadly neglected because of lack of time. Within the parameters of genre fiction, though, I definitely have more than one favorite!

My "Big Three", all right up there jostling with each other, are: The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Twilight Saga, by Stephenie Meyer, and the Harry Potter series, by J.K. Rowling. I need to read The Chronicles of Narnia, by C.S. Lewis, to see whether I can make this a four-series list!

After these books, there are others, such as the Vampire Academy series, by Richelle Mead, (yeah, I LOVE good vamps that don't kill humans!), the River of Time series, by Lisa T. Bergren, Sunshine and Shadow, by the husband and wife team of Sharon and Tom Curtis, Night Magic, by Charlotte Vale Allen, Dansville, by Robin McCorquodale, Tryst, by Elswyth Thane, My Name Is Asher Lev, by Chaim Potok, A Canticle for Leibowtiz, by Walter M. Miller, Jr., The Martian Chronicles and Fahrenheit 451, both by Ray Bradbury, The Left Hand of Darkness, by Ursula K. Leguin, ALL of the original Sherlock Holmes stories, by Arthur Conan Doyle, the Demon Trappers series, by Jana Oliver, and on and on and on..... You get the idea! Lol. Some of these books are pictured below. Click on the images for the Goodreads or Amazon page.

  1. Great topic and great post Maria. I also cannot call any single book my favorite. When I posted a list of my favorite books I tried to make s list that was consisted of books that I considered equals among favorites. I actually have somliae attitudes about other favorite things including favorite foods, favorite films, etc. I have always hated the “what’s your favorite” question.

Your list is awesome. I was surprised to see A Canticle for Leibowitz. It has been a long time but I remember it being a great book.

    1. Hi, Brian!

Thanks for the good word!! <3 <3

Yeah, I really don't think many readers can pick just ONE favorite book! The number of AWESOME books out there is just AMAZING!! Of course, there are many different reading tastes, so a book I would consider a favorite might not appeal to someone else. I would NEVER mention a horror novel as a favorite, for instance! Lol.

I like your approach -- mentioning favorite books that you actually consider "equals among favorites". I did the same thing with my "top" books.

You make a very valid point in extending this concept of "equals among favorites" to foods and films, too! I have the same problem in those departments, as well. I have a pretty long list of favorite movies, which, of course, include the ones based on my top "favorites" above! And don't get me started on food!!! Lol.

Thanks for the compliment on my list! Yeah, I LOVE "A Canticle for Leibowitz"!! I've been thinking of re-reading it. It is indeed a TERRIFIC novel!!

Thanks for the GREAT comment!! <3 :)

Thanks for the welcome back!! <3 <3 <3

  3. Great answer. I also feel the same and did a quick top 5. I told myself if I thought about it too much, I would never finish this post. HAHA! Great books in your favorites though. Some of those I love too!

    1. Hi, Leslie!

      Oh, THANK YOU!! <8 <8

I would imagine that most readers can't really pick just ONE favorite book. A few will probably be able to, though.

You're so funny!! :) :) Yeah, I felt the very same way! If I hadn't made a quick list, I would NEVER have finished this post, either! LOL.

Glad you like my list, and I'm SO happy that some of them are your faves, too!!

      Thanks for the nice comment!! <3 <3 :) :)

    1. Hi, Karoline!

Oh, DEFINITELY!!!! I think that a LOT of readers would pick these books!!

I ADORED "A Canticle for Leibowitz"!! But there are different reading tastes out there, so not everyone will love this novel. I've actually been thinking of re-reading it, too. :)

Thanks for the comment!! <3 :)

  5. I have too many to choose from. I can't even really narrow it down.

I still need to read LOTR!

I really like the Narnia series, but not as a whole. I do understand why the series is loved (I adore The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe!), but I just can't with the rest of the series. I do recommend trying them at least once, but I HIGHLY recommend reading them in published order. (The Horse and his Boy takes place in the middle of the first book and it is my least favorite in the series... and one of my least favorite books, period.)

    1. *Apparently I deleted it, but I like the first three that were published (TLtWatW, Prince Caspian, and Dawn Treader). I can't with the rest of it.

    2. Hi, Shannon!

I haven't even read the first of the books included in The Chronicles of Narnia. I have all of them in a one-volume edition. Well, I'll read "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe", and see how I like it. If I love it, then I will continue with the others!

      Thanks for commenting!! <3 :)

  6. Maria...I'm going to be a new follower just cos most of your fave books are some of my fave books too! I didn't think many bloggers would like Stephanie Meyer's Twilight saga as I've read many say it's not well written, but it's definitely one of my faves! I've read the series 3 times (from memory) now you've brought it up, I think it'll be time to revisit.

Harry Potter series (need to revisit asap) and Lord of the Rings I loved too. I also loved Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy and really disappointed they didn't release more than one movie. I was lucky enough to meet Richelle and get my series signed.

Enjoy and have a great week!

    2. Hi, Angelica!

OMG.....I owe you some comments back, I know..... I will be visiting you soon, I promise!!! :) :)

And you LOVE The Twilight Saga, too?! YAAAAAAY!!!! Yeah, I know there are many readers who don't like these books, but I ADORE them!! And they say the books are not well-written! Say WHAT?! I happen to think that YES, they ARE well-written!! I've read the entire series 3 times myself, and the first book, "Twilight", FOUR times -- once in Spanish! Lol. Now you know HOW MUCH I LOVE these books!!! :) :)

I want to re-read LOTR and HP, as well! YES, YES, YES!!!!

I haven't seen the Vampire Academy movie, but do want to. Like you, I'm disappointed they haven't made any more movies from this series..... I think the first one wasn't all that popular.

OMG!!! Richelle Mead SIGNED ALL the books in the series for you?! YOU LUCKY, LUCKY, GIRL!!!!! I should be so lucky.....

As for the follow options, I have GFC, as well as Linky Followers. However, the LF widget is not visible when you put http or https in front of my blog's address. I don't know why..... But try using GFC. I don't think you can use it on your phone, though.

I also have the option of following by email, although I do prefer that people follow with GFC. And don't forget Bloglovin'! You can find both of these options in my sidebar. You can also follow me on Twitter and Google +, if you want. All of these options are in my sidebar.

      Thanks so much for the lovely comments!! <3 <3 <3 :) :) :)

  8. Great answer! It's so good that you're able to specify a few favourites, though I definitely agree that it's far too difficult to choose just one favourite book. It would probably be easier to pick a favourite kid, in my opinion. I'm also quite the diverse reader and I enjoy lots of different genres, so I wouldn't ever be able to compare them all and choose a favourite! Though, like you, I do have a couple preferred series'/books.

Feel free to check out my Book Blogger Hop answer if you wish! :)

    1. Hi, Charlotte!

Thank you so much for the compliment!! :) :)

I don't think that many of us bookworms are able to pick just ONE favorite book. Each of our faves has a special charm unique to itself! So yeah, it's very difficult indeed to pick just one. If I had kids, I wouldn't be able to pick one favorite kid, either! :)

I'm a very eclectic reader myself, and love several genres, with the exception of two: erotica and horror. I don't much like mysteries (except for those of Sherlock Holmes) either, but will occasionally read one. Same thing goes for thrillers. I can take them. But the two genres I mentioned above? No way!! Lol.

Thanks for the nice comment!! <3 :)
