This Week's Question

When reading a book, do you use
a bookmark to mark your
place in the book, or do
you just fold over the top corner
of the page?

(Submitted  by Maria @

My Answer

This one will definitely be short and sweet, lol.

Some readers might feel comfortable just folding over the top corner of the page, but for me, this is a HUGE no-no. I never, EVER do that! I always try to handle books in such a way that will make it look as if they haven't been read. Not folding pages over is one of these ways. I think it takes away from a book's appearance if I fold a page over. I really can't stand doing that! So I always use a bookmark. If I don't have one handy at the moment, then I repeat the page number in my mind a few times, so as to remember it. Then, as soon as I can get my hands on a bookmark, I put it into the book.

I handle books with utmost reverence and respect, no matter what the subject matter or genre of the book are -- whether it's literary fiction, a romance novel, science fiction, or a book on philosophy. Folding pages over is, in my totally honest opinion, a sign of disrespect toward a book. If anyone else does this, of course they are perfectly free to do so. I'm only stating MY opinion, not "laying down the law" for anyone else.

Bottom line: to me, books are sacred, so I treat them the way sacred objects should be treated.

Besides....there are LOTS of GORGEOUS bookmarks that I enjoy buying, so as to put them between the pages of books!

So that's it for this week! Lol.

  1. I thought that I was the only person who thought about this subject. I cannot imagine folding a page to use it as a bookmark. It is so far out of the realm of something that I would do that I do not think that I ever thought of doing it.

I have a lot of bookmarks in my house. Yet, when I start reading books it is often in my bedroom and they are often far off in another room. This I often use pieces of paper, sometimes sales receipts or other paper that has been stuck in the book before I bought it. I need to get back to using proper bookmarks :)

    1. Hi, Brian!

Oh, by no means! Some bookworms might consider people like us to be a little OCD, but I do think that most of us treat books with respect. I am SO happy that the idea of folding down page corners is, as you put it, "so far out of the realm of something that I would do that I do not think that I ever thought of doing it." Well stated!! :) :)

Yep, I have a lot of bookmarks, too. I have a very nice collection -- especially Twilight bookmarks! I also have some Harry Potter ones. But, like you and other bookworms, in a pinch, I will grab whatever I have handy.

To me, folding down page corners is a bookish "sin". Lol.

Thanks for the SUPER NICE comment!! Happy Sunday!! <3 :)

  2. I completely agree! I clench my teeth whenever I see people turning down the corners of books. Why? WHY? When bookmarks are so easy to come by. Receipts, playing cards... a spoon lol. Why destroy a book when so many other things are on hand!

    1. Hi, there!

I am SO glad you agree!! I actually CRINGE whenever I see people folding pages over. There are SO many beautiful bookmarks out there to do the job of marking one's place in a book!! And, as you say, if one isn't available at a particular moment, one can always use any piece of paper that happens to be handy. But folding page corners over? Absolutely not!!

Thanks for your comment!! Enjoy your week!! <3 :)

  3. Same here, Maria.

I would NEVER fold back a page. I too like to leave the book looking as though it has never been read.

As you will see in my answer, I use various things for bookmarks. :)

Thank you for another wonderful question, Maria.

    Have a great weekend.

    1. Hi, Elizabeth!

Yeah, I think that mos of us book lovers would never fold pages over!

Like you, I prefer to keep my books looking new! And what the HECK do manufacturers make bookmarks for, anyway? Although, like you, I will grab whatever piece of paper I have handy, when I need to. Lol.

You're very welcome for the question! Thanks for the lovely compliment, and for your very nice comment!! <3 :)

      Happy Sunday, Elizabeth!! HUGS!!! <3 <3 <3 :) :) :)

OMG! He does like to tease you, donesn't he? Lol.

I LOVE bookmarks, and have a very nice collection! Some are store-bought, while others are freebies from my local library.

  5. I totally agree with you and we have similar answers. I try to keep my books looking new too and I feel it is disrespectful to the author and the book to fold a page over. Have a great weekend!

    1. Hi, there!

I'm glad we agree! I really think that most of us book lovers do treat our books gently.

I honestly think that folding page corners is not only disrespectful to the author, but to the itself. Some people might think it's crazy to say this, but this is honestly how I feel! Lol.

Thanks for commenting!! Hope you have a wonderful week!! <3 :)

  6. I know I'm really in the minority with my attitude towards books... Believe me I don't deliberately set out to deface them but the only place I want to see rows of pristine books is a book store. It makes me incredibly sad to see personal bookshelves with rows of books that look like they've never lived.

    1. Hi, Nicola!

Well, I'm sure there are others out there who see this issue the way you do. :)

I am totally in favor of keeping my books looking as NEW as possible. I am very careful with them. As I stated in this post, I consider them to be sacred objects, to be treated with respect. And I LOVE to see books that look new sitting on my bookshelves, even if I've read them!! Lol.

Of course, I never break the spine, either. I consider that "killing" a book.

Thanks for sharing your opinion! Have a wonderful week!! <3 :)

  7. I use a bookmark or whatever I need, but I don't have a problem with people dog-earring pages. I like seeing books that appear to have been read and well loved.

    1. Hi, Chrissy!

I'm glad you use a bookmark! I think most of us book lovers do. As for other people dog-earing pages, I CRINGE when I see someone doing that.... Of course, I don't say anything, but inside, I'm feeling SOOOO sorry for the poor book....

I don't think that books have to show signs of extreme use in order to be "well loved". In fact, I believe in showing love to books by treating them gently.

Sometimes, I do highlight text in books, for example. But I only do that with paperbacks, and I ALWAYS have a "backup copy" of the very same book, which I keep in PRISTINE condition! Lol.

Thanks for commenting!! Have a great week!! <3 :)

  8. I also don't like to crease the pages in the books I buy since they are too precious to bend. I always love getting beautiful bookmarks!
