This Week's Question

Do your bookshelves have books
ONLY, or do you also
have bookish items on them?

(Submitted  by Elizabeth  @

My Answer

As an ardent bookworm and bibliophile, I couldn't possibly even WANT to put anything on my bookshelves except books. Absolutely not!! In my honest opinion, bookshelves are for BOOKS. Not everyone will agree with me, though.

I'm sure there are many readers who put family pictures and other knicknacks on their bookshelves, right along with their books. In my case, I have collected SO many books, I simply don't have room on my shelves for anything else! Lol. However, I really don't want anything else on my shelves.

As for bookish items, I don't have that many of them, anyway. I do have bookmarks, which I keep in one of my night table drawers. I have a book light, which I also keep there. That's about it.

See the pics below, and you'll have plenty of evidence that NOTHING takes the place of BOOKS on my floor-to-ceiling bookshelves!! That's all I have to say!  Lol.

The pictures below show partial views of my living room shelves.

  1. This is an interesting topic that I never thought about Maria.

My wife does all the organization of this type in my house. We have a lot of items in our books such as pictures, coffee mugs, candles, etc.

As I recall, long ago when I was single, I kept just books on my shelves.

I love the look of your bookshelves. You get so many books into a relatively small space.

    1. Hey, Brian!

I'm glad you like this topic! it definitely has quite a bit of importance in a bookworm's life -- especially if said bookworm has a LOT of books! Lol.

Yes, there are people who use their bookshelves to hold not only books, but other items, as well, such as the ones you and I have mentioned. I can see why, too, as that would tend to give bookshelves a more aesthetic look. In my case, though, I have SO many books, that's just not possible! Lol.

As a matter of fact, I do have one small bookcase in our bedroom on which I have placed three Harry Potter wands I own. I also have a small plush toy on the top shelf -- a pink, winged unicorn. Lol. However, that bookcase looks cluttered, as it's stuffed to the gills with books. So I decided not to show a picture of it.

I guess things do change once you get married. In my case, though, that hasn't happened. I have traded a "designed look" on my bookshelves for every available space on which to put a book, as, to me, books are more important than any other object that I could possibly own! Lol.

Thanks for the compliment on my bookshelves!! Yea, I've stacked books on top of other books. On some shelves (but not all) the books are doubled up; in other words, there are books BEHIND other books!!

Thanks for the WONDERFUL comment!! Hope you and your wife have a SUPER nice weekend!! <3 :)

  2. Dang your shelves are FULL! I personally wouldn't like that, because then it looks less like a book shelf and more like storage, but I admire your skill to fit all those books so perfectly into the space!

    1. Hi, Heather!

Yes, they SURE are!! Lol. The books you see have taken me YEARS to collect. But they are by no means all there is to see of my collection. I have many more in public storage. When my husband and I moved into a smaller apartment, 2 years ago, I was forced to donate a LOT of my books. But the ones I could NOT bear to part with, I decided to put in storage.

I know my shelves look -- and, indeed, are, VERY full, but heck, what was I to do? These are the books I want and NEED to have close to me!! So I had to accommodate them somehow. Lol.

Thanks for the compliment on my skill at fitting all of these books into the space I had available! It took some doing, let me tell you!

As I told Brian in my comment above, I do have a smaller bookcase in our bedroom that has some bookish items on it -- three Harry Potter wands, and one small plush toy: a pink, winged unicorn. Lol. But I didn't include a picture of this bookcase because it's HORRIBLY cluttered. Lol.

Thanks for the nice comment!! Have a great weekend!! <3 :)

  3. I used to have my TBR bookshelf crammed to the brim and double stacked but after I got diagnosed with a severe dust mite allergy I had to lighten the load and pack up a lot of my books to make it easier to clean. My eyes aren't constantly swollen anymore which does make it easier to read but I do miss having my full shelves! I have plans to turn a guest room into a reading room and I'm planning on adding bookish stuff in there though it'll still be mostly books!

    2. Hi, Katherine!

Oh, it's too bad that you got diagnosed with a dust mite allergy....but I'm glad that you were able to solve the problem by putting some of your books in boxes. But yeah, there's nothing like seeing full bookshelves! (Well, except for those who have other items on them, in addition to the books.)

How WONDERFUL that you're soon going to have a reading room!! I would be SO happy if I could only have an extra room for my books.....one in which to have a cozy little reading corner, too. (Although I do LOVE the one I have in the living room!)

Thanks for the SUPER NICE comment!! Hope you have a WONDERFUL reading weekend!! <3 :)

  5. Woah your shelves are filled to the brim! Ideally only books would be in bookshelves but they are in a sorry state right now. I have a lot of junk that I need to get rid of. Kudos to you!

    1. Hi, Edel!

Yeah, they SURE are!! I just LOVE sitting here in the living room, looking around, and seeing all of my beloved babies sitting on shelves all around me!! Aaaaaah, BLISS!!!! Lol.

Sometimes you have to start clearing out stuff you no longer want or need. I know the feeling....for me it's hard to do that, though, because I'm such a hoarder! Lol.

Thanks for the compliment!! I LOVE owning this many books!!!! YAAAAAAAAY!!!!!

Thanks the nice comment!! Have a WONDERFUL weekend!! <3 :)

  6. Hi Maria:

I am back!! My sister is here, but I wanted to check out your answer. :)

Love your bookshelves. I like how some are vertical and some are horizontal. I probably will need to start doing that. :)

Thanks for sharing, and I hope you have a good weekend.

    Happy Hopping!!

    1. Hi, Elizabeth!

Oh, WONDERFUL!! And how GREAT that your sister is with you!! Thanks for taking the time to come check out my answer, anyway!! <3 <3 <3

Thanks SO much for complimenting my bookshelves!! Yeah, I decided to do that because of the different sizes and formats of the books I own. I not only have trade paperbacks, but also mass market paperbacks, as well as hardcovers. SO I tried to arrange them so that they would ALL fit! It did take some effort, but it was WELL worth it!! I LOVE being surrounded by my beloved babies!!!! YAAAAAAAAAY!!!!! :) :) :)

You're very welcome for the share! Thanks so much for the SUPER NICE comment!! Hope you have a good weekend, too!! And I'm SO HAPPY you're back!! <3 <3 <3 :) :) :)

  7. Love your bookshelf pics! My shelves are mostly books, although I may have an occasinal Funko or something else living there. :) You know, they get around! It depends on the shelf too. Like a bookshelf in my bedroom might be all books, but in the living room I might have other stuff, you know? But generally shelves are for books lol.

    1. Hi, Greg!

Oh, THANK YOU!! Music to my ears!! I LOVE being surrounded by all of these books!! Lol.

A couple of people answering this question also have those cute Funko figures on their shelves. I'm more into plush toys, although I don't have much room for them! Lol. But I do have a small one that's actually sitting on top of a CD player, which is on the top shelf of a small bookcase in our bedroom. The plush toy is a pink, winged unicorn. SO CUTE!! Lol. That bookcase is SO cluttered, though, that I decided not to include a picture of it in this post. I also have three Harry Potter wands sitting on that top shelf, too! Lol.

But yeah, I do think that bookshelves should be only for books. Again, that's my opinion. I guess I wouldn't mind having some bookish items on them, along with my books, but the thing is, I really don't have that much room for my books, so I have filled EVERY nook and cranny on my shelves! Lol.

Thanks so much for the GREAT comment,Greg!! Hope you have an AWESOME weekend!! <3 <3 :) :)

    1. Hi, Jemima!

Oh, me too!! It's so interesting to see how different people arrange their precious books! Some people only have books, like me, but others also include photos and other things. I just don't have room for anything but books, since I have so many of them! Lol.

Thanks for the visit and the comment!! <3 :)
