From critically acclaimed author Cindy Pon comes an edge-of-your-seat sci-fi thriller, set in a near-future Taipei plagued by pollution, about a group of teens who risk everything to save their city.

Jason Zhou survives in a divided society where the elite use their wealth to buy longer lives. The rich wear special suits, protecting them from the pollution and viruses that plague the city, while those without suffer illness and early deaths. Frustrated by his city’s corruption and still grieving the loss of his mother who died as a result of it, Zhou is determined to change things, no matter the cost.

With the help of his friends, Zhou infiltrates the lives of the wealthy in hopes of destroying the international Jin Corporation from within. Jin Corp not only manufactures the special suits the rich rely on, but they may also be manufacturing the pollution that makes them necessary.

Yet the deeper Zhou delves into this new world of excess and wealth, the more muddled his plans become. And against his better judgment, Zhou finds himself falling for Daiyu, the daughter of Jin Corp’s CEO. Can Zhou save his city without compromising who he is, or destroying his own heart?

Why I can't wait for this one!

This novel certainly has some pretty breathtaking and highly fascinating elements! I love the combination! It has it all -- a great extrapolation from our current environmental and economic concerns, political and class intrigue, and even romance!! Another huge plus is that it's a male protagonist who finds himself torn between love and duty. It's about time we saw this conflict in a guy's life portrayed in YA fiction! And, since it's also SF, I just NEED to get this book!!! (P.S. -- The author is an Ursula K. LeGuin fan....'nuff said!)

Cindy Pon is the author of Silver Phoenix (Greenwillow, 2009), which was named one of the Top Ten Fantasy and Science Fiction Books for Youth by the American Library Association's Booklist, and one of 2009′s best Fantasy, Science Fiction and Horror by VOYA. The sequel to Silver Phoenix, titled Fury of the Phoenix, was released in April 2011. Serpentine and Sacrifice, her second duology novels, were published in 2015 and 2016 by Month9books. Want, a near-future thriller set in Taipei releases June 13th, 2017 (Simon Pulse).

She is the co-founder of Diversity in YA with Malinda Lo and on the advisory board of We Need Diverse Books. Cindy is also a Chinese brush painting student of over a decade.

  1. This isn't my kind of book (I'm not into sci-fi) but I REALLY hope you love it! If you love all those elements, I'm sure you'll enjoy it :) And I do love the idea of focusing on conflict in a guy's life - we need more of that in YA.
Hope you LOVE it, Maria! <3 <3 :) *HUGS*

  2. Wow that cover sure catches one's attention. I've been trying to read some sci-fi here and there this year and I'll admit, this one might just fit the bill. Great feature. My choice this week is horror which I know you don't enjoy but Cassius gets to come back after his long absence and he wanted to pick a book with a bird on the cover.

    1. Hi, Barb!

Yeah, it SURE does! I think it's an image of a young man wearing an astronaut helmet, but then again, I'm not completely sure. It IS a great cover, though!

I want to read more SF myself, especially since it's one of my favorite genres, whether adult or YA.

Oh, I'm SO glad that Cassius is now back! I know he's being a good boy, now, right? How cute that he wanted to pick a cover with a bird on it!

Thanks for dropping by and leaving such a great comment!! <3 <3 :) :)

I think it's about time something like this showed up in YA fiction -- and in adult fiction, too, for that matter! (Although I haven't any such books so far)!

The setting is AWESOME!! We do need some new settings in fiction, especially in YA!!
