This Week's Question

 What is your favorite holiday
beverage to drink while you're
reading?

(submitted  by Billy @

My Answer

This is my favorite time of year!! It's that time when all good, kind, warmhearted, and lovely things are suddenly very much 'in style'. It is indeed "the most wonderful time of the year"!!

Even though we don't have snow down here in South Florida (boo-hoo.....) the Christmas spirit -- as well as that of other holidays -- is felt all over the place!

Reading becomes very special to me during this beautiful holiday period, because I turn to Christmas-themed romances to the exclusion of all other genres. I just can't help it; I NEED to read HEA Christmas stories! Yes, I do need to get my warm fuzzies!

My favorite beverage to drink as I read is, of course, eggnog -- spiked, that is! It's not fun if it's not spiked, is it? Lol. If not eggnog, then I usually drink hot chocolate, with 3 teaspoons of sugar, and generously spiced with cinnamon (which I like to sprinkle on my eggnog, as well). I also love to top off my hot chocolate with whipped cream. Oooooh....WHY do holiday beverages have to be so darn FATTENING?!

When in a more sensible state of mind, I don't drink either of the beverages mentioned above. Besides, Miami isn't exactly "Blizzard Central", lol. So these beverages are not all that appropriate for a hot climate (UGH!) such as ours.

It's funny how I have always wished I could have lived up north, and actually experienced snow...... So the beverages mentioned above are pure wish fulfillment. They're my way of wishing for some cold weather down here! I mean, really, what kind of Christmas can it possibly be if we have 80-degree Fahrenheit temps?!  And I do NOT like thinking about Santa on a surfboard. It just doesn't compute.

If the weather is too warm to warrant drinking the beverages mentioned above, then I'll go with some herbal tea, laced with some honey and half-and-half, with cinnamon, too, naturally! And I prefer it hot, of course, although not TOO hot.

I have never been an iced tea fan, so, no matter how hot and muggy it is outside, I will NEVER drink this, at any time of year! In fact, there's something about iced tea that just won't let me focus on a book. Lol. I have no such problem with warm or hot tea.

I might be getting some eggnog (with a bit  of rum) for this holiday season. But I'll go easy on it. After all, I dnn't want too many extra calories, nor do I need too much of a buzz. Lol. I DO need to be able to concentrate on the book I'm reading, right? Lol.

Happy Reading to all!!! (And to all a good night!)

  1. Hi Maria - On some years I make an Alton Brown Eggnog Recipe. It is filled with creme and sugar. It is heavy but incredibly good. A glass of it is probably 1500 calories :) Maybe I will make some next week and to read by.

    Here is a link.

    Happy reading!

    1. Hey, Brian!

Oh, that sounds SINFULLY delicious!! Lol. You KNOW I have to go check out that link, lol.

I really envy you, Brian.....you will have cold temps and probably a roaring fire, so sipping that scrumptious eggnog will be just the thing! Well, maybe I'll do the same thing down here, even though I do have to turn on the A/C! Lol.

      Happy reading to you, too!!

Thanks for the SUPER nice comment!! :)

  2. OK...you've so convinced me to buy some eggnog and rum this weekend. My husband makes a great hot toddy in the winter and it rocks, especially if I am feeling under the weather. It warms my whole body.

    1. Hey, Barb!

Yeah!! I LOVE this drink, and really haven't had it for a while. I wish I could drink by a glowing fire, as snow softly fell outside my living room window.... Lol. I have never seen snow, you know. And I'm SO sick and tired of this weather that's too hot for December! The other day, the temperature was 85F!! That's SUMMER temperature!! UGH. So you see, I really don't need to get warmed up, lol. But I LOVE eggnog with rum anyway!! Hahaha!!

Thanks for the SUPER nice comment!! <3 :)

  3. Another fantastic answer, Maria.

I normally do not drink anything, so I sort of just pulled something out of the air for my answer. :)

Your answer on my blog was delightful as usual. I was smiling from ear to ear.

ENJOY your weekend and your spiked eggnog. I actually hate eggnog. :)

    Happy Hopping!!

    1. Hi, Elizabeth!

Thanks for the compliment!! <3 :)

Well, sometimes I don't drink anything, either. But when I do, those are the drinks I enjoy -- at this time of year, anyway.

I'm so happy that I brought a smile to your face! I love injecting some humor into my posts and comments on other blogs.

I hope you enjoy your weekend, as well! As for the spiked eggnog, I need to swing by the supermarket and pick some up, and the rum, too! As the pirates in "Treasure Island" used to say, "Ho, ho, ho, and a bottle of rum!"

Happy Hopping to you, too!! Thanks for commenting back!! <3 :)

    1. Hi, Ronyell!

Oh, I LOVE eggnog, even if it's not spiked, lol. It's VERY fattening, though, not to mention it has cholesterol.....but heck, I don't drink it year 'round! Lol. I hope you like it when you do try it!

Thanks for the visit and the comment!! :)

  5. I prefer my hot chocolate with whipped cream too. :-) It gets pretty chilly here at night (at least by my standards) this time of year, so it's a perfect drink to settle in with. I always try to have a little eggnog this time of year (but no alcohol for me as I don't drink the stuff), but since I'm the only one in the family who does, most of the carton ends up going to waste since I don't drink it fast enough.

I'm not really a tea or coffee drinker. I'm a lover of water and tend to drink that most of the time.

    1. Hi, Wendy!

Yeah, hot chocolate with whipped cream!! :) Oh, how nice that it gets cold -- at least a little bit -- where you live! We've been having temps in the high 70s and low to mid 80s, would you believe? Man, do I wish I could see some snow!! Lol. So definitely hot chocolate is perfect for those chilly nights.

I LOVE eggnog, whether spiked or not! Of course, spiking it with rum makes it more, ahem, delightful, I think, but I also drink it "unspiked".

How funny that you're the only one in the family who drinks this stuff! You should buy a smaller carton, then, so most of it doesn't go to waste.

As for tea and coffee, although I drink both, I do prefer coffee. Here in Miami, we have VERY strong espresso. I LOVE it!! I also love English Breakfast Tea, and herbal tea, but coffee really wins out.

As for water, I know I should drink more of it. I only drink it when I'm really thirsty, though.

Thanks so much for dropping by and leaving such a nice comment!! Enjoy your Sunday!! <3 :)

  6. Eggnog is not drinkable without alcohol in it, IMHO. I like hot coco, but then it's negative digits outside with snow. I don't think I could feel Christmasy if it was 80 and sunny outside. Although 30's would be nice right now. Thanks for sharing, and have a great week.

    1. Hi, Shandy Jo!

Oh, I like eggnog both spiked and "unspiked", lol, but I must admit that I prefer it with alcohol.

I know....it really sucks that we have temps in the 80s down here at this time, and it's sunny. I wish it would at least go down to the 50s. We rarely get temps in the 30s, but when we do, it's mostly at night, and farmers have to scramble to protect their fruit crops!

I'm crossing my fingers that we'll get a little bit of cold on Christmas Day, at least....lol.

Thanks for the nice comment! Hope you have a great week, as well!! :)

  7. Tea with honey is good although I don't really have a holiday per se. Not a big eggnog drinker but rum... that's something else again lol. I hear you though, I like having snow for the holiday but it's snowy and cold here too and I'm almost over it? But yeah 80's and no snow would be an adjustment, no doubt! If only there was a happy medium! :)

    1. Hi, Greg!

Yeah, tea with honey, I should have mentioned that, too, as I do drink it sometimes. As for rum, I only drink it mixed with eggnog. Otherwise, it would be much too strong for me, lol.

I agree with you on the weather; a happy medium would indeed be best. But man, it sure doesn't feel Christmasy with 80-degree temps and no snow.....It REALLY ticks me off, too! Lol.

Thanks for dropping by and commenting!! :)
