My Answer

Interesting question! I've never given this any thought at all. I read all through the year, and don't really pay attention to how many books I read in any particular season or time of year.

Having stated the above, I will add that I do need to be comfortable in order to engage in this type of mental activity.  If it's summertime, I have to be in an air-conditioned room, or at the beach, under a huge umbrella (I've never been a sun worshiper), and preferably with a nice breeze blowing, and a can of something cool in my hand. This is because I absolutely HATE the heat (it sometimes gets into the 90s here in South Florida). I am unable to read if I'm feeling hot, sweaty, and sticky. UGH. In fact, I get into a very bad mood when I'm unavoidably in this condition. Therefore, I cannot focus on reading ANYTHING. All I want is to get out of the heat!!  As soon as I get into an air-conditioned room, or a breeze starts to blow, I calm down considerably, and can then focus on a book, whether fiction or nonfiction.

Reading when I'm cold is much easier for me! It only goes down to the 50s here in my area (on rare occasions, it can go down to the 30s at night), but I love it! (To us Floridians, that's COLD. Lol.) I can even read outdoors when it's cold. All I need to do is pile on a couple of sweaters if necessary. If I'm indoors, I feel very cozy and comfortable. We don't usually turn on the furnace, so it can sometimes get chilly inside our condo. No problem! I throw on a sweater, and curl up in my reading nook, or on the recliner/couch, and read away, sometimes with a cup of hot tea or chocolate next to me.

Since I've never seen snow, I don't know how I would react to the freezing temps up north, but I can tell you that I do NOT like the sweltering temps down here!

Bottom line: as long as I'm in a place that's quiet, with good lighting (at night), and my body temperature is comfortable, I can read at any time of the year, and read as much as I want!

    1. Hi, Jayne!

They SURE do! I need the most ideal situation possible in order to be able to concentrate on reading. Lol.

  2. Great post Maria.

I also am not really effected by seasons when it comes to reading. It is of course very important to stay comfortable.

The distraction of temperature pale next to the distractions of that other people can cause when trying to read :)

    1. Hey, Brian!

      Thanks for the compliment! :)

Yeah, as long as my body temperature is comfortable, I can totally focus on a book.

I wouldn't say that the distraction of temperature pales in comparison to interruptions, at least not for me. Both are equally irritating to me! But you know, it's amazing how some non-readers feel that it's no big deal to keep interrupting a reader who is trying to get immersed in a book. They don't seem to GET IT! Since reading is not important to THEM, and they probably consider it a "frivolous" activity, as well as "a waste of time", they don't see any problem with interrupting those who are trying to read. AAAARRRGGGHHH!!! (As Charlie Brown would scream, lol.)

Thanks for the great comment!! :)

  3. I've never really thought much about when I read more either. I'm contemplating today so I can answer this question. :-) I do agree about needing to be comfortable in order to give my attention to my book!

    1. Hi, Kym!

Being comfortable is very important when settling down to read. I'm glad you agree! Otherwise, it's impossible to get totally immersed in the book.

  4. I don't read as much during the summer and I think the heat is definitely a factor (I'm in AL). With the kids out of school we're definitely outside a lot more and I end up just feeling fried at the end of the day and I have the advantage of actually liking heat! I hate being cold so in winter (well our version) I don't want to leave the house so I read a bit more!

    1. Hi, Katherine!

Yeah, I can see how you wouldn't read as much in the summertime. That time of year is a very active one for a lot of people, for the reasons you've mentioned. And you like the heat! Everyone's body thermostat is set at a different temperature, I guess! Lol.

      Thanks for the comment!! :)

  5. I am the opposite. I LOVE reading outside when it is hot and humid. :)

I guess the difference between the Snow Birds and the Floridians. :)

    ENJOY your weekend.

    Happy Hopping!!

    1. Hi, Elizabeth!

OMG, another one who loves the heat! Lol. I think you're right -- we Floridians want the cold, and you Snow Birds want the heat. Too funny! As they say, "the grass is always greener on the other side"!

Hope you enjoy your weekend, as well! And Happy Hopping to you, too!

Thanks for the cute comment!! :)

  6. I do hate heat but I will still find a way to read, like plenty of chewing on ice to cool down. Winter is easy you bundle up with the fireplace and hot cocoa.

    1. Hi, Teri!

Oh, I never thought of that! It sounds like a great idea, if you're sitting outside. I prefer to go indoors with the AC blasting away, if it's very hot outside.

How I wish I could have a REAL winter! Yeah....with the snow falling softly outside, while I bundle up as you have described it..... Well, I'll have to settle for AC and iced tea! Lol.

Thanks for dropping by and commenting!! :)

  7. Oh God, I also hate the heat!! When you're cold you can just throw on a sweater or whatever you need to keep you warm. But what do you do when it's hot?! You can't just walk around naked on the street, you can't D:

Now to the actual topic... I've never given this much thought either, but then again, I live in Venezuela and it's pretty much the same all year round... I used to live in Germany though, I think I'd like to read more during the winter I guess, since it's cold outside and you get to see the snow from your window while you curl up with your book :P

  8. My reading doesn't really change with the seasons either. Like you, I live in a climate that doesn't flucuate as widely as those who get snow in the winter. Boy, would I love a snow day once in awhile though--maybe not the cold, but just to be "stuck" at home with only a book to read. :-) Have a great week!
