My Answer

The answer to this question is a very obvious one for every bookworm: "Of course not!" We might tell ourselves that we will pass by, and not go inside, but we can't help doing so! At least, I can't! Heck, just the very sight of the bookstore from a distance is enough for me to feel the pull....lol. And then, when I get closer, I see all the nice, shining new books in the windows.....I'm totally GONE when those precious objects hit my vision.....

Not only am I totally unable to just walk on by without going into a bookstore, but I'm also unable to go in without walking out with at least ONE book.  Sometimes I buy more. It all depends on how hard my addiction is affecting me that particular day....

Last weekend, and the weekend before that, I visited the nearest Barnes & Noble store. On the first weekend, I walked out with two hardcovers. On the second weekend, I walked out with a hardcover and two "flexcovers" (for lack of a better term; this is a new type of printed book with a soft cover that seems to imitate leather, and is very supple and flexible).

So no, it's TOTALLY impossible for me to pass by a bookstore -- especially if I'm on foot, but also even if I pass by in a car or bus -- without just HAVING to go in! Those books just CALL OUT  to me!  Lol.

I do a lot of book buying online, as well. I not only go to Amazon and eBay, but to Alibris, Abebooks, Powell's and Books-A-Million, So this should keep me from feeling compelled to go into bookstores, right? WRONG. Even with my online book shopping, I STILL can't pass by a bookstore, and just keep on going!

  2. New books are definitely hard to resist! I actually tend to not buy much in bookstores because I lock up and want all the books but know I have so many books at home!

    1. Hi, Elizabeth!

OMG, I don't know how you do it.....I am TOTALLY unable to! I guess it's that whole bookstore ambience. I LOVE that just as much as the books themselves!

Hope you enjoy your weekend, too! Happy Hopping to you as well! Thanks for commenting!! : )

  5. Thoughtful post as always Maria.

I live on Long Island. We once had numerous large, independent and unique bookstores. Sadly all but one is gone. We have a fair number of vet small sores left, Barnes and Noble stores, and one last superb store that carries both new and used books.

I do stop in any bookstore that I am unfamiliar with. The local small stores are so small that I sometimes do not go into. The larger stores, be they chains or independent, I cannot resist.

    1. Hey, Brian!

Thanks for your kind words! : )

Oh, that's so sad.....I guess the state of the economy must have had a lot to do with that.

As you know, the Borders chain went out of business some years back. That was a very sad thing, as well. I used to go there a lot. BTW, they were the ones who first came up with the idea of having a small coffee shop right inside the store. Barnes and Noble later copied them.

Here in Miami, we still have B&N, of course, although the chain has closed a couple of stores to the north of where I live. There's a nice B&N store on Coral Way, a street in Coral Gables, which is a few miles away. When I go to B&N, though, I prefer to go to the one by the Turnpike, on North Kendall Drive. It's a HUGE, beautiful store, with two floors. It's a few miles away, too, but not as far away as the other one.

There used to be three independent Spanish-language bookstores near my previous address, located in what is known as "Little Havana", but they have closed down.... One of them had to move because a school bought the entire building they were located in. I have not been able to find them since, so they probably went out of business, as well. This bookstore was just two blocks from my previous address, so I used to go there ALL the time! It was called "LibrerĆa Alpha", and sold esoteric books written in Spanish.

One of the other Spanish-language bookstores was about three or four blocks from me. It was called "LibrerĆa Universal". They had their own independent publishing department, too. I think they went out of business because of the economy; their books were VERY expensive, so I hardly ever went there.

The third bookstore, "LibrerĆa Cervantes", had a very nice selection of books, in different price ranges. They relocated to Hialeah, a city not far from Miami that has a large Spanish-speaking population, as MIami does. It wasn't near me, though; I had to go there by car. Now it's even farther away.

(By the way, the word "librerĆa" means "bookstore" in Spanish, not "library".)

We have an EXCELLENT indie bookstore in the Coral Gables area -- "Books and Books". They have author presentations and events going on ALL year round! They have a full-fledged restaurant inside the store, too.

"Books and Books" has been in business since 1982. They have expanded, and now have several branches, one of them in Miami Beach, and another in West Hampton Beach. They will also ship books anywhere in the US, for FREE!

If you're interested in this bookstore, here's the link to their main website:

      http://www.booksandbooks.com/

I'm sure there are other bookstores scattered all over Miami, Coral Gables, North Miami, and South Miami, but, since I'm not driving for now, I have to stick to B&N and online shopping! If I were able to drive around, I'm sure I wouldn't be able to resist ANY of these stores!! Lol.

Thanks for the nice comment!! : )

  6. I have no idea what flexcovers are, omg. DEFINITELY GOING TO GOOGLE IT ASAP. (Hopefully I haven't seen it before because I'm just really stupid, not because they aren't available in my country - in this case, I will cry.)

    Fun answer, Maria!

    1. Hi Mara!

You know, I think I've seen the name "flexcover" somewhere, but don't remember where. The two books I bought are the first I've ever seen with this type of cover. So they're not paperbacks. I guess these covers are some type of rubber. They look very durable, too -- much more durable than regular paperback covers. I think I'm going to Google this word, too.

Hey, by the way....don't call yourself stupid!! You're actually a very smart person -- I can tell from visiting your blog!

I hope you can find these covers in your country, if not now, then very soon!

Glad you liked my answer! I like to inject some humor into my BBH posts!

Thanks so much for commenting back!! : )

  7. If I am by myself, you can bet I'm going in there! I even stop in the book sections at any store that has a book section! The only times I pass on by is when I'm shopping with my family. My husband refuses to let me go into bookstores because he knows I'll end up with a book...or two...or more. It's also a hassle trying to keep an eye on my kids AND look at books! As much as I want to give the books my attention, my kids come first. And no, I can't rely on my husband to keep an eye on the kids while I look at books.
