Book Synopsis

The capital has fallen. The Darkling rules Ravka from his shadow throne.

Now the nation's fate rests with a broken Sun Summoner, a disgraced tracker, and the shattered remnants of a once-great magical army.

Deep in an ancient network of tunnels and caverns, a weakened Alina must submit to the dubious protection of the Apparat and the zealots who worship her as a Saint. Yet her plans lie elsewhere, with the hunt for the elusive firebird and the hope that an outlaw prince still survives.

Alina will have to forge new alliances and put aside old rivalries as she and Mal race to find the last of Morozova's amplifiers. But as she begins to unravel the Darkling's secrets, she reveals a past that will forever alter her understanding of the bond they share and the power she wields. The firebird is the one thing that stands between Ravka and destruction—and claiming it could cost Alina the very future she’s fighting for.

Why am I waiting on this book?

Well, the very first thing is that cover!!
I think this is my very favorite one, out
of the three I've seen thus far.
Also, I really enjoyed the first book
in this series, Shadow and Bone
and own the second, Siege and Storm,
which I hope to read soon!
The world of this novel is a totally
fascinating one for me!
It's based on the culture of old Russia,
in the later years of the 19th-century -- a
world that is extremely appealing
to me, the world of Tolstoy
and Dostoyevsky, Tchaikovsky,
and the doomed Romanov family,
around whom flitted the sinister Rasputin....
This fantasy series is unique because
the author used a very different
setting for her story, instead
of the usual medieval one, somewhere
in England or Ireland.
And I love the characters!
I can't wait to see how Bardugo ends
this totally enthralling tale!

What do you think of my choice?
What fascinating book(s)
are you waiting on this week?

  4. I remember your commentary on the previous book. It sounded fantastic! This indeed sounds like something worth waiting for. The entire connection with Imperial Russia seems so unique and creative in the context of a Fantasy Series.

Looking forward to what you have to say on the second book as well as this one.

    1. Hey, Brian!

Oh, that book certainly IS fantastic! I LOVED it!! What I enjoyed about it most of all was precisely the connection with Imperial Russia. I agree -- it's very creative and unique. I've never encountered another fantasy novel influenced by that particular place and time.

I hope to be able to start on the second book at some point this year.... hopefully before June, so I can go right into the third book!

Thanks for visiting and leaving such a nice comment!! : )
