My Answer

Years ago, I used to actually consider it beneath me to read romance novels.  I was into loftier reading material, such as science fiction, classics, literary fiction, and philosophy.

That all began to change when I first fell in love....

Suddenly, romance novels had an appeal to me that they had never had before.  I did feel guilty reading them, telling myself they were not really literature.  But I couldn't stop reading them!  I slowly realized that I had been living in my head too much, in spite of being smitten by Jane Eyre when I was still in my teens.  But it really took me a long time to come to that realization.  So at first, I read them while thinking that I shouldn't be.

Now I read as much romance as I can!  I no longer feel guilty about reading these novels, either.  I think my reading is getting more balanced now.  I still enjoy my more intellectual reads. but I also enjoy the romance.

I would have to say that my guilty reading pleasure now consists of re-reading some of my favorite romance novels.  I'm currently re-reading The Twilight Saga, and will also be re-reading Jane Eyre.  So now I'll be mentally scolding myself for doing this, instead of moving on to books I've never read before, whatever genre they might be!

Here's my 'guilty re-reading pleasure' list!

Stephenie Meyer

Charlotte Bronte

Sharon and Tom Curtis

Charlotte Vale Allen

Elswyth Thane

Amy Plum

Amy Plum

M.J. Hearle

Robin McCorquodale

Have you read any of these books?
If so, did you like them?
What's your guilty pleasure read?

  2. I did the exact opposite as you, I went through a romance phase in high school, burning out after reading Scruples and now I'm in love with the classics. Nevertheless, you should read what you want to read with no guilt attached!

On a side note, I love youe header!

    1. Hey, Whitney!

Interesting! Readers are as unique in their tastes and reading patterns as people in general are in their looks. I still do like the classics (except for dreary and depressing ones, like Kafka's "The Castle"), but these days, I seem to be caught up in a frenzy of YA reading! And it was The Twilight Saga that got me started...lol.

Anyway, you're right -- you should just read whatever you want, with no guilt attached. Quite true!

Oh, thank you so much for the compliment about my header!! Music to my ears!! I wish I could claim credit for it, but I can't. It was made for me by the very talented graphic and web designer Jennifer Johnson, of Sapphire Blog Designs. She also made my buttons. Take a look at the upper part of my sidebar.

Thanks for the visit and great comment!! :)

Well, good for you!! It's so nice to hear about a guy reading romance! If more guys did that, men and women might get along much better! Lol.

  5. I've been meaning to read the Amy Plum series, it sounds great. I've always read romance, I remember reading books off my mum shelf, (which I probably shouldn't have sneaked), she had lots of Virginia Andrews and true crime novels. I'm even luckier now to work in a library - so I've got easy access to everything :) - and I still read romance, even if some patrons think they're crappy - more for me!!

  6. I actually haven't read any "romance" novels. I'm afraid of them having too graphic sex in them. I don't like graphic sex. But, I do love romance. That's why I stick to YA, I guess.

Thanks for stopping by my post a couple of weeks ago. I'm just getting back to everyone.
