Stacking The Shelves #7

This is a weekly book meme/blog hop hosted by
Jennifer, Lili, Stephanie, and Tynga @ Tynga's
Reviews!  As the title implies, this is all about
sharing the books you're adding to your shelves, be
they physical or virtual.  For the complete rules and

This week's haul!

Book Received for Review
(from the publisher)

Rita Leganski
Trade Paperback, 400 pages
Literary Fiction, Magic Realism,
Southern Fiction, Spirituality

I am in love, enchanted, totally enthralled....
I have just started reading this novel,
and love it already!  The writing can only
be described as exquisite, poetic, luminous.
It concerns a young boy who is
extraordinarily sensitive to sounds, while
remaining mute himself.
This is a must read for anyone who,
like me, loves the magic and wonder of
words and the imagination!

Books Bought

Lynn Kurland
Trade Paperback, 368 pages
Fantasy, Romance

This is book 4 in the Nine Kingdoms series.
I'm slowly collecting them, so I can hopefully
start from the first one.
In this installment, Sarah seeks the
help of Ruithneadh to thwart her own
brother's evil plans.
Sure sounds exciting!!

Author Unknown
Simon Armitage, translator
Hardcover, 198 pages
Fantasy

I've always been a great fan of the tales of
King Arthur!  This is a late 14th-century
Middle English story, done in a verse translation
by Simon Armitage.
The immortal J.R.R. Tolkien
has also done a translation of the tale,
which I must certainly acquire, too!

Robert Jordan
Hardcover, 334 pages
Fantasy

This is an expanded version of Jordan's
novella, from his "Wheel of Time" series, and
deals with a prophecy of a child born
to change the world, and the efforts to prevent
the forces of the Shadow from killing him.
I found this one at a bargain price
($4.99 plus tax) at a Walgreen's Pharmacy
here in Miami, so I couldn't pass it up!

Andrew Lane
Hardcover, 311 pages
Mystery, Historical Fiction,
Young Adult Fiction

I've been a lifelong Sherlock Holmes fan,
so when I saw this book featured on
the blog Alluring Reads, well, I simply had
to own it!  I love the idea of Holmes
as a teen, using his remarkable sleuthing skills
even then.  Here he's on break from
boarding school, investigating the mysterious
deaths of two local people
in the county of Hampshire, England....
Oh, I am ecstatic!!

John Berendt
Hardcover, 414 pages
Travel, True Crime, Art, Architecture,
Nonfiction

This was another bargain find, again
at $4.99 plus tax! While this is not
my usual type of read, I do love art and
architecture, so I bought it.  Besides, I had heard
of Berendt's success with his first book,
and decided to try this one.
The 'plot' concerns the burning down of
the Fenice Opera House in Venice, Italy,
and Berendt's subsequent
investigations into the probable cause.

So what do you think of my haul?
What interesting books
did you stack your
shelves with this week?

  1. I'm sorry, but only one of your books is familiar to you. You got some interesting books. Now I will have to look up most of these books. Nice haul Maria.

  5. All look good Maria.

The Sir Gawain story looks to be a must read. I did not know that Tolkien also did a translation of this. I actually have never read any of the Round table stories but I really should.

Like me you seem to want to acquire an entire series before starting the first book!

  6. Hey, Brian!

Since I love any story connected to King Arthur, this is definitely a msut read for me! I imagine it would be for anyone who loves the Arthurian tales. In fact, I don't know how it is that I hadn't acquired or read this book before!

Yes, indeed, Tolkien did a translation of this work himself. Shame on me for not having/reading that one, either...oh, but I certainly will, now!!

About acquiring the entire series before reading the first book...this is a practice fraught with peril! Lol. I have to stop doing this, because if I don't like the first book, I won't want to go on to the rest of the series, naturally.

    Thanks for the comment!! :)

  7. The City of fallen Angels looks so wonderful, Maria! As usual it's such a pleasure to see your books because the genres are so eclectic I never know what you gonna get :) Enjoy!

  8. Hey, Kara!

Yeah, I do have eclectic tastes! However, there are two genres I won't touch -- erotica and horror. Not that I mind sex in romance novels, but erotica tends to include such things as BDSM, and other kinky stuff (like threesomes!), which I TOTALLY abhor. As for horror, that might seem ironic, considering that I love vamps and werewolves, right? Ah, but I like the romantic type of vampire -- similar to Edward Cullen. I don't like the Dracula type of vampire, which is a totally EVIL creature. So I don't like writers like Edgar Allan Poe, H.P. Lovecraft, or Steven King. Ditto for Dean Koontz, V.C. Andrews, and Clive Barker.

My blog initially gives the impression that I only read YA paranormal romance & urban fantasy, but that's not the case. I do read a lot of that, but I enjoy other genres as well. I'll have to feature more of those genres!

Thanks for the great comment!! :)
